BOTTLE-CAPIING DEVICE AND THE LIKE.
Application filed May 1, 1925.. Serial No. 27,815.
The present invention relates to bottlecapping devices and the like; and its object is, generally, to provide an improved device of that character which may be read- .ily and economically made; and more particularly, to provide such a devicecom u'ising sheet-metal parts bent or die-pressed into the desired shapes and assembled in an improved manner and interrelation.
This and any other objects hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the inven tion finds preferable embodiment in, the device and the construction and assembling methods Off its parts, hereinafter particularly described in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a bottle-capping device;
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the base of the device and certain parts carried therey;
Figure 4 is a side view, shown partly in central vertical section, of certain parts of the device; v
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view of certain parts taken on line 55 otFigures 1 and 4;
Figure 6 is a view of a blank from which the base of the device may be formed;
Figure 7 shows a blank from which, the standard carried by said base may be formed;
Figure 8 is a view of a blank from which the operating lever handle of the device may be formed;

In the embodiment of the invention illus trated by the drawings, my device comprises a base 1, upright standard 2, member 3 secured thereto, and operating lever handle 4, all of which are desirably formed by bending or die-pressing suitable blanks cut from sheet metal; the device comprising also the vertically-sliding plunger 5 having at its lower end the holder 6 for the bottle cap 7. The base 1 is provided with a pair of bottle-positioning and sustaining arms 9, 9 swingably connected at 1,0 and slidably and turnably mounted on the base by means of headed pins 8 extending through slots 11 in the arms, which are adapted to receive. in their open position seen in Figure 3, the neck of a bottle 12 and to enclasp the same, when the bottle is moved inwardly to the limit of such movement, and to thus hold the bottle during the capping operation.
. The base 1 may be made from a sheetmetal blank 13,, shown in Figure 6, by bending or die-pressing the same to form the downw'ardlyextending strengthening r rlange 14. This base has a rearwardly-positioned opening 15 and a pair of forwardlypositioned spaced openings 16, and also the 7 holes 17 which receive the pins 8. The upright standard. 2, may be made from a sheet-- metal blank 18, seen in Figure 7, by bending the same to form the horizontally crosssectionally arcuate or circular portion or the downwardlypost 19 provided with extending ears 2O thrust through the open-- ing 15 in assembling the parts, these ears being then bent at 40 into locking engagement with the bases under side.

This hookedend 22 of the standard has a recess 23 which, in such assembled position of the parts, receives the projection 0r downwardly-extending rib 24 on the bases standards web portion 21 as by rivets 29 A laterally-extending web portion 21 ofthis standpassiug through holes 30. These lateral portions of member 3 extend diverginglydownwardly through the openings 16, 16 respectively and, into holding engagement by their hooked lower ends. 31, 31 with the bases under side.
The operating lever handle t may be made from a sheet-metal blank 41, seen in Figure 8. by bending the same to form downwaidly-extending sides 32 pivotally mounted on the standard 2, and positioned no at its opposite sidesrespectively, by the pivot pin passing through holes 42 in said sides and through a hole 34 in the standard. These lateral sides 32 of the lever handle have adjacent such pivotal mounting 33 cam edges 35 slidably bearing on the plungers upper end to operatively force the same downwardly against the pressure of the spring 36, these cam edges being provided with stop portions or projections 37 adapted to limit the plungers downward movement.
It will be seen that the sheet-metal parts of this device may be economically made, and when formed or bent and assembled as above explained, a light, strong and rigid b0ttle-capping device is provided.
The plungers cap-engaging lower end or capholder6 is desirably magnetized permanently so as to retain any bottle-cap therein which may too loosely fit in the socket 338 of the cap-holder. The extremity 39 of the lever handle may be shaped, as shown, to form a cap-remover.
It is manifest that the general structure herein described may be utilized for many purposes other than as a bottle-capping device; such as punches, devices for riveting or applying fasteners for connecting papers, operating dies or seals, etc. and I do not propose to confine this invention and the patent issued therefor to any such specific use as is set forth in this specification.
The invention being intended to be pointed out in the claims, is not to be limited to or by details of construction of the particular embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawings or hereinbefore described.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described: a base having an openingtherethrough; a standard carried by the base, made of sheet metal, and havinga laterally-extending web portion provided with a hooked lower end, and a portion bent into cross-sectionally arcuate form provided with a downwardly-extending ear. the hooked lower end of the standard and the ear being thrust through the opening, said hooked end holdingly engaging the bases under side and the ear bent into locking engagement with said under side; a plunger slidably carried by the web portion.
2. In a device of the characterdescribed: abase having an opening therethrough and a downward projection on its under side:
a standard carried by the base, made of sheet metal. and having a laterally-extending web portion provided with a hooked lower end with a recess therein, and a portion bent into cross-sectionally arcuate form provided with downwardly-extending ear, the hooked lower end of the standard and the ear being thrust through the opening. said hooked end holdingly engaging the bases under side, said projection seated in said recess, and the ear bent into locking engagement with said under side; a plunger slidably carried by the web portion.
3. In a device of the character described: a base having spaced openings therethrough; a plunger; a standard carried by the base; a member, made of sheet metal. and having a middle portion bent into i-ross-sectionally arcuate form to provide a slide bearing for the plunger, and lateral. portions secured to the opposite sides respectively of the standard and extending divergingly-downwardly through the openings respectively and into holding engagement with the bases under side.
4:. In a device of the character described: a base having a rearward opening and forward spaced openings therethrough; a plunger; a standard carried by the base, made of sheet metal, and having a laterallyextending web portion and a portion bent into cross-sectionally arcuate form and provided with a downwardly extending ear thrust through the rearward opening and bent into locking engagement with the bases under side; a member, made of sheet metal, and having a middle portion bent into crosssectionally arcuate form to provide a slide bearing for the plunger, and. lateral portions secured to the opposite sides respectively of said web portion and extending diverginglydownwardly through the forward openings respectively and into holding engagement with the bases under side.
5. In a device of the character described: a base having an opening therethrough; a standard carried by the base having a laterally-extending web portion provided with a hooked lower end, and a portion of crosssectionally arcuate form provided with a. downwardly-extending ear, the hooked lower end of the standard and the car being thrust through the opening, said hooked end holdingly engaging the bases under side and the ear lockingly engaging with said under side; a plunger slidably carried by the web portion.
6. In a device of the character described: a base having an opening therethrough and a. downward projection on its under side; a standard carried by the base having a laterally-extending web portion provided with a hooked lower end with a recess therein. and a portion of cross-sectionally arcuatc form provided with a downwardly-extending ear, the hooked lower end of the standard and the ear being thrust through the opening, said hooked end holdinglv engaging the bases under side. said projection seated in said recess, and the ear lockingly engaging with said under side: a plunger slidably carried by the web portion.
7 In a device of the character described: a base having spaced openings therethrough; a plunger; a standard carried by the base; a member having a middle portion of crosssectionally arcuate form to provide a slide bearing for the plunger, and lateral portions secured to the opposite sides respectively of the standard and extending diverginglydownwardly through the openings respectively and into holding engagement withthe bases under side.
8. In a device of the character described: a base having a rearward opening and forward spaced openings therethrough; a plunger; a standard carried by the base having a laterally-extending web portion and a portion of cross-sectionally arcuate form and provided with a downwardly extending ear thrust through the rearward opening and lockingly engaging with the bases under side; a. member, made of sheet metal, and having a middle portion of cross-sectionally arcuate form to provide a slide bearing for the plunger, and lateral portions secured to the opposite sides respectively of said web portion and extending divergingly-downwardly through the forward openings respectively and into holding engagement with the bases under side.
9. A bottle capper comprising, a base and a vertical post or standard of sheet metal, an element attached vertically at the front of said standard comprising vertical bars of sheet metal located one at each side of the standard and secured thereto, said bars at their lower ends being extended clownwardly and outwardly away from each other to said base, and said bars at their upper ends and at a distance below theupper ends being integrally connected by forwardly extending loops substantially circular in form located one directly over the other, a handle pivotally connected to the upper end of the standard and formed adjacent said pivotal connection with a cam portion, a cylindrical plunger slidably mounted through said loops, spring means tending to elevate the plunger to hold its upper end against the cam portion of said handle, and a bottle capping element at the lower end of the plunger.

A bottle capper comprising, a base to serve as a support for the device, a-vertical tubular post formed of sheet metal and having a forwardly extending vertical wing formed integral therewith, ears at the lower end of the post extending through an opening in the base and bent against the under surface of the base, a hook formed integrally with said wing and extending through said base and engaging the under side thereof, a vertical guide at the forward edge of said wing, a plunger slidably mounted in said guide, cap crimping means at the lower end of said plunger, a handle pivotally connected to the upper end of said wing, and a cam on the handle to engage and actuate said plunger.

A bottle capper comprising, a base to serve as a support for the device, a vertical tubular post formed of sheet metal and having a forwardly extending vertical wing formed integral therewith, ears on the lower end of the post extending through an opening in the base and bent against the under surface of the base, a hook formed integrally with said wing and extending through said base and engaging the under side thereof, two diagonally extending braces disposed at opposite sides of said wing and joined by,
integrally formed spaced apart loops extending forward of said wing, a hook at the lower end of each respective brace extending through the base and engagmg the under side thereof, a plunger slidably mounted in said loops, a spring surrounding said plunger and located between said loops, said spring hearing at its upper end against the plunger and at its lower end against the lower loop, cap crimping means at the lower end of the plunger, a handle pivotally connected to the upper end of said wing and a cam on the handle to engage the upper end of the plunger to depress the same.
12. A bottle capper comprising, a base having a substantially circular opening with lateral recesses extendingtherefrom and a forwardly extending slot communicating with said opening, a tubular standard formed of sheet metal and having a forwardly extending wing integral therewith, ears at the bottom of the standard, a hook at the bottom of the wing, said standard and wing being attached to the base by inserting said hook through said opening and slot and extending said ears through said lateral recesses whereby .the hook engages the under surface of the base and the bottom of the
