J. T. WILLIAMS GREASE CUP File'd Au 4, 1924 INENTUR Jan/v. FM/MIME.
Patented Nov. 1, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GREASE CUP.
Application filed August This invention relates to improvements in grease cups, and the objects of the invention are to provide a device of this character for more efliciently greasing the wheels of vehicles, particularly wagons, without taking the wheels off.
The invention consists essentially in a cup vprovided with a plunger adapted to be inserted through a hole drilled in the hub of a wheel, the cup being enclosed in a casing on which is a spring-operated retaining member adapted to hold the cup within the casing.
Referring now to the drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure:
Figure 1 is an enlarged end view of the hub of a wheel partly in section showing the grease cup in position.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the cup.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the cup.
Figure 4 is a section on line 44 of Figure 3.
In the drawings, A designates the hub of' a wheel having an opening or hole 10 drilled therein into which is fitted my improved grease cup, comprising an outer casing 11 formed with a suitable shoulder 12 adapted to contact with the hub of the wheel. Within this casing 11 is designed to fit the grease cup 13 preferably, as here shown, of cylindrical form open at both ends, the upper end being formed with a shoulder 14:. Within the grease cup is a plunger 15, plunger rod 16 and cap 17 on the outer end thereof, the lower endbeing connected to the plunger 15. As here shown, pivotally mounted at 18 on the shoulder of the outer casing, is a dog 19 adapted to engage, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, with the shoulder of the cup when in normal position resting on the shoulder 12 of the outer casing, and where- 4, 1924. Serial No. 730,020.
by the cup is held securely in position. This dog is automatically held in normally engaging position by means of a spiral spring 20 between it and the shoulder 12 of the outer casing. This cup-retaining device can be of any suitable construction. In the side of the cup I provide a suitable air-hole 21.
From the foregoing the operation of my device will be apparent. The grease cup is filled by hand or otherwise and then inserted in the casing until the shoulder 14 comes below the spring-actuated dog 19 on the casing 11, then pressure is exerted on the cap of the plunger rod which, in turn, exerts pressure through the plunger on the grease, forcing it out through the bottom of the cup to lubricate the wheel.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
A grease cup comprising an outer cylinder formed with a flanged top to engage with the hub of a wheel, an inner cylinder formed with a flanged top to engage with the flanged top of the outer cylinder, a piston or plunger in the inner cylinder, a plunger rod provided with a cap at its outer end adapted to close the inner cylinder and a spring actuated dog pivotally mounted on the flanged head or top of the outer cylinder adapted to automatically engage with the flanged top of the inner cylinder.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN TRUMPER WILLIAMS.
