T inani- Application filed December a, 1925. serial No. 74,070.
. invention relates to inol ders flasks of the two-p ece type comprlslng a drag" and acope. I
vIn flasksof the type stated, isioustomary toprovide the drag with a pin and the cope witha guide engaging the pinso that after. the lmpresslon is made and thecopeus removed to lift the pattern from the mold, the
cope may be returned to itsidentical original position so that a perfect casting may be made. As the pins and guides wear by use it will be apparent that eventually the en- .gagement between the pins and guides will be imperfect. Furthermore, in long use of the flask the drag will eupand so that adjustinent of the pins and guides would be necessary. A
Heretofore it has been the practice to efiec' the adjustment by lnserting pieces of cardboard under the attaching inc-ans ofthe pins or guides, asthe case may be, in order to make a close fit between the guidesand pins. This practice has not been uniformly satisfactory because the card-board is likely to be moistened by the moisture used in the formin of the mold and furthermore the 'HJQELHS for holding the pins and guides on theflask usually consisting of wood screws are likely to wear large holes in the ends of the flask that have to be plugged, and in any event the adjustment complished.
This invention has for its object the provision. of means by which the pin and guide' may be, quickly adjusted without removal from the ends of the flask and consists primarily in the provision of plates fixedly see cur-ed to the ends of the cope and drag and having the pins and guides mounted for adjustment relatively to said plates and providing set screws to enable a. fine adjustment of the partsfor almost successful operation of the flask.
The invention has for a further object the provision of a bearing on the pin to engage the guide that is offset outwardly from the pin to prevent wearing of a portion only of the pin and thus forming a rib or ridge on the pin that would require drilling or filing the pin to remove. V o
The invention will be described in detail hereinafter and will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end view of a snap flask is unsatisfactorily ac.
the line 33 of Fig Figure 4-, ahorizontal sectional view min I plane indicated by the lined-Al of Figure l, Figure 5, a similar view on a plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Figure 1, c
Figure 6, a similar view on a plane iDCll' cated by the line 6-6 of Figure 1,
Figure ,7, a detail sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 7-7 of Figure 5,
FigureS, a horizontal sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 8-8 of Figure 1, Figuref), a perspective view of the guide, Figure 10, a sinilar view of the pin show; ingl the upper portionthereof broken away, an j i Figure 11, a similar view of. the plate and said plate 1 is provided with bosses .3
having threaded openings 4 ,thc1.'ein,;said bosses seating in. openings Z) in the ends of t c drag B. Securedto the plate 1, by means of screw bolts 5 engaging through enlarged openings-,6 in the offset flanges 7, is a pin 8 COI1T1Ct(lWlth said flanges 7 by means of armed), aid pin 8 being ll-shaped in cross section as shown, and the outer -surface thereof offset from the remainder of the outer face of the pin as shown at 10 to form a bearing for the guide to be herein after described. It will be apparent that the enlarged openings 6 in the flanges 7 provide for a limited adjustment sidewise and up and down of the pin 8 relatively to the plate 1 and the drag 2, said adjustment being held by means of the screw bolts 5 engaging the. threaded openings 4 in the plate 1 and bosses 3. A further adjustment of the pin relatively to the plate 1 and the drag B,
f wise or up or down as may be required for the proper adjustment thereof, all adjustments being maintained by tightening on the bolts 5. Secured to the cope A is a plate 12 by means of screws or other driven faswtenings 13, and having a boss 14 located at each side of the vertical center of the plate, each of said bosses having a threaded opening 15. Above and below each boss 14 is an enlarged portion 16, each of which carries a polygonal headed cap screw 17. The guide comprises a V-shaped' portion 18 adapted to slidably engage the bearing surface 10 of the pin 8 and having oflset flanges 19 with enlarged openings 20 to receive bolts 21 engaging the threaded openings 15 in the bosses 14 to secure the guide on the plate 12, the enlarged openings 20 admitting of adjustment of the guide sidewise and up and down, and being held in adjusted position by tightening the bolt 21, the inner faces of the flanges 19 being also engaged by the headed set screws 17 to adjust the guide in and out from the plate 12.
From this description it will be apparent that the pins 8 and the guides 18 may be accurately adjusted to insure returning the cope in exactly the same position relatively to the drag for forming the casting after removal of the cope from the drag to remove V'the pattern from the mold, 21 indicating an outwardly directed flange on the .guide, and flanges 19 to form a hand hold for handling the cope What is claimed is l. Guiding means for two part molding flasks, comprising a plate adapted to be secured'to one of the members of a flask, bolts engaging said plate, a pin, flanges on said pin and mounted on said bolts, set screws engaging said flanges and adapted to engage the plate to adjust the position of said pin,
and a guide adapted to be secured to the other member of a flask and to slidably engage the pin.
2. Guiding means for two part molding flasks, comprising a pin adapted to be adjustably secured to one of the members of a molding flask, a plate adapted to be secured to another member of the flask, said plate having threaded bosses, bolts engaging said threaded bosses, set screws engaging said plate, and a guide having a bearing surface adapted to engage said pin, said guide mounted on the bolts aforesaid and engaging said set screws.
3. In guiding means for two part molding flasks, a plate to be secured to one part of a flask, a pin, flanges on said pin, bolts secured to the plate, the flanges having openings larger than the diameter of the bolts and adapted to receive said bolts and set screws threadedly engaging the flanges and abutting the plate to adjust the pinrelatively to the plate, the enlarged openings in the flanges also permitting limited adjustments of the pin vertically and horizontally.
4. In guiding means for two part molding flasks a plate to be secured to one part of a flas a guide, flanges on said guide, bolts secured to the plate, said flanges having openings larger than the diameter of the bolts and adapted to receive said bolts and set screws threadedly engaging the plate and abutting the flanges to adjust the guides relatively to the plate, the enlarged openings in the flanges permitting adjustments of the guide horizontally and vertically.
'5. Guiding means for two part molding flasks, comprising a plate to be secured to each part of a flask, a pin, flanges on said pin, threaded members engaging said flanges and one of the plates to hold the pin on the plate, set screws threaded into the flanges and engaging the plate to adjust the pin relatively to the plate, a guide, flanges on the guide, threaded members engaging said flanges and the other plate to hold the guide on the plate, and set screws threaded into the plate and engaging the flanges to adjust the guide relatively to the plate.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
GEORGE C. COLEMAN.
