DISPLAY GBNTAINER.
Application filed March 31, 1926.
The present invention relates to dispensing containers useful for displaying merchandise and a particular object of the invention is to provide a separate insert or attachment memher which may be readily applied to any ordinary non-folding or set-up box so that the contents of the box will be displayed in conjunction with an advertising medium.
A dispensing display container composed entirely of a single blank and having an adjustable integral display device forms the subject matter of co-pending application for patent, Serial. No. 21,575, filed April 8, 1925, and in part, the presentinvention is an improvement in or modification of said prior construction.
It has been found in practice that folding bOXQSlUIVO certain disadvantages particularly in connection with the packing of the merchandise. Stiff or set-up boxes are therefore generally preferred and it is the aim of the present invention to provide an efficient improved containing display device or advertising medium which can be applied to ordinary set-up boxes with the least amount of labor, and further, according to the present invention, the insert member, even though it is a separate member, is retained in a rigid operative position with relation to the box without the use of any securing means such as an adhesive, staples. or like means. because in the present form, the said attachment member has self-retentive means which are rendered operative by pressure alone when it is placed in position within the box member. Besides this. the display device of the attachment member and means for bold ing the same in an erect position. have been improved materially so that under all ordinary conditions, the said display is rigidly held in a raised. folded position for advertisinn: purposes.
In carrying out the invention. the insert or attachment member is composed of a single sheet of material, preferably cardboard, which is blanked out in the shape and size as required. A portion of the blank is cut out to form a folding advertising device which is arranged to be folded on itself and 0 held in a raised position. The bodv of the blank has extensions therefrom which are folded so as to be received within the box and to form retentive means and a reinforcing bottom for the box. Said extensions cooperate to form arigid structure and thereby provide a firm base for the support of the Serial No. 98,855.
display or. advertising medium when the lat ter is in its erect position.
The invention will be more fully described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings and the novel features thereof will be defined in the appended claims.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a box having the improved attachment applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the attachment member, in its simplest form shown unfolded;
, Figure 3 is a plan view showing the attachment in place within the box;
Figure 4 is a plan view of the attachmentmember in a modified form, and
, Figure 5 is a sectional view showing the attachment member applied to a box having tapering sides.
Referring to said drawings. 1 represents in general the attachment member having an end extension 2 and side extensions 8. The blank is scored on the lines 4 so that the e.- tensions and 3 can be folded downwardly. The blank is cut out according to the sir ze and shape of the opening an'dthe blank is additionally cut out on the line 5. The dis play device or advertising medium 6 is adapted to fold upwardly'on lines 7 and 8. To hold this display device in its erected position, the notches 9 are provided and which notches are engaged by the flanges 10 at the side ofthe opening. 7
When in use, the attachment as above described. is held in place within the box member 11 by means of the pressure of the folded extensions? and 3 bearing against the sides and back of the box. ll he display device, when not in use, lies in a flat position and then the usual telescopic cover of the box (not shown) may be placed over the box member 11. It is desirable that the opening should be as large as possible to permit eas removal of the goods furtherit is de sirable that the goods should be displayed as fully as possible. The enlargingof the opening correspondingly enlarges thedimensions of the cut out'portion so as to present a surface of greater area for advertising. Furthermore it is necessary that there should be no obstruction at the front of the box. therefore, the side ledges 10 are so degned that they will not interfere with the removal of the goods, but sufficient material must be left the corners of the attachment member so as to hold the same together and for this reason the fillet 13 and neck 14 are left so as to give stability to said member.
The retentive means for holding the display device in an erect position comprises the notches 9 which engage the edges of the a held at a certain definite angle to get the best effect, therefore stops 16 are provided to engage and hold the display device in a determined set position.
Referring more particularly to Figure 4, therein the attachment member is substan tially the same as previously described with the exception that the portions 2 and 3 are modified to the extent that they are of greater length and the extension 2 forms an extended false bottom 17 or reinforcement for the box and which bottom is perforated and creased at 20 to provide a rack 19 for the goods contained within the box. The extensions 3 are creased so that the portion 18 at the end may be folded inwardly so as to be engaged under the bottom of the device.
in assembling the box, it is only required that the operator must fold the extensions of the attachment member and then drop it into the box where said member will be rigidly held in place by pressure of the folded extensions against the sides of the box. In addition, when the side extensions 3 are engaged under the bottom of the display member, the latter can be entirely removed from the box without disturbing its contents and thus provide a separable selfcontained dispensing display container.
The improved attachment member may be applied equally as well to a box having tapering sides and this is an additional feature because if tapering boxes are used the same may be nested together so as to save I packing space thereby giving all the advantages of folding or knocked-clown boxes in connection with the transportation and storage of the boxes.

2. A container having a box-member a folding separable insert member adapted to be held within said box member, self retentive means for retaining said insert member within said box-member, said means comprising side extensions and an end extension of said insert member, said side extensions folding under said end extension; said extensions bearing against the side and end walls of said box member, said insert mem her having a folding display portion and said side extensions constitgting supports for said display portion.
3. A container having a box-member, a folding separaole insert member &(lrl')t'l to be held with said box member, retentive means for retaining said insert member within said box-member, said means com prising an end ex ension and de extensions folding under said end exten ion; said extensions bearing against the side and end walls of said box member; said in t member having a folding display port. 11; supports for said display portion comprising said side extensions and means provided on said cut-out portion enga ng said supports whereby said out-out portion is held in a determined raised folded position.
4-. An insert device for containers as de scribed composed of a body having an end extension, side extensions a d a folding dis play member; supports said member comprising said side extensions; means for retaining said display member in raised position; said end extension forming the bottom of the insert device and said side extensions being arranged to fold under said end extension when the latter is in its folded position.
