METAL-WORKING MACHINE.
Application filed March -My invention relates to metal working -..machines and-particularly to that type of machine which is run at a high rate of speed s and punches, cuts or otherwise acts upon the stock at predetermined distances.
'Theobject of my invention is to provide a Y cheap, simple 1 and efficient form, of high speed punching machine whereby equally distant holes may be punched, equal portions cut from stock,.stock cut, bent or -other wise acted upon, organ-y. combination of the foregoing while the machine is being run. at
a high rate .of speed.
."A further purpose in carrying out the above objects is to provide a machine having adjustable: guides for properly guiding the *material to be acted upon so as'to bring it inexactalignment: before the tools thereon.-
Still a further purposeof my invention is toprovide a machine embodying the foregoing features and having safety devices for t releasing the punchesorother tools in order to prevent any breaking thereof.
In connection with the'abo've it is my purpose to provide a reel or receiving device for accumulatingthefinished material together with suitable means for releasing said material to remove it from the machine.
My invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, 7 construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more specifically set'forth and describedand par.- ticularly pointed'out in the appended claims.
To enable others skilled in theart to which my invention appertains, to construct, use and operate my improved punching Ina- =chine, I will describe the same more fully,

The machine is built with'the side walls 1- having suitablestandards for floor setting and the top or table 2 beneath which .is located at a position near the front end of same the .motorB which is provided with ordinary rheostat Land with theclutch member 5 and operating handle'6 for placing the machine in motion. At 'a position near the front end of the table 2 are showntwo pairs of'feed rolls each 7 and 8 which are mounted on suitable shafts 9. The outer .feed rolls 7 are provided at-a .point immediately, above the lower housing. 11 with the gears 19 which are directly connected to the gears 20 on the shafts carrying the feedrolls 7.so
as to provide uniform rotation in. the rolls 7 and 8. The .feed rolls 7 and 8 ,are built up of the bushings 21 having a flange-224w the lower portion thereof, on which acollar 23' rests and 13 secured inposition' means ef "the plate having the set-screws therein for securely clamping said collar in position. The feed rolls 7 have their shafts mounted in a sliding bearing which fits into the opening 26 in the table 2 and each of said bearings is provided with an overhanging flange 27 extending over the edge of said opening and onto the finished on their inward opposite faces so as to provide for the mounting of a feed roll spring stud 104 which has a lateral portion 105 extending into and fitting within the recess 100, while the outward threaded end of the same 106 rests within the recess 103 on the square shank 101. The nut portion 107 is formed integral with the said feed roll stud, and between such portions and the inward side of the square shank 100, a spiral spring 108 is adapted to rest, while a nut 109 is placed'upon the threaded portion 106 of said stud and a spring 110, placed between the outer face of said nut and the inner side of the square shank 101 so that the tension between the said shank will be common and equally divided in their outward pressure. It will thus be seen that upon any irregularity or slightly extra thickness of the stock fed between the rolls 7 and 8, the rolls 7 may, between movement of the square shanks 100 and 101 supporting the same, depress the springs 108 and 110 supported by the stud 104 so as to cause the square shanks 100 and 101 to move toward each other and thus allow for a greater distance between the said rolls 108.
The machine is provided at a point immediately in front of the feed rolls 7 and 8 with two stock drums 31, one of which provides stock for each pair of the feed rolls 7 and 8. These stock drums are rotatably mounted on said table and provided with any suitable bearing and adjusting means H as shown at 32 of Fig. 2.
The shaft 14 is provided with a gear which meshes with the large gear 34 which. is connected between the two spiders and borne on the shaft 36 which rests in suitable housings 37 in the side walls 1. Upon the periphery of the spiders are mounted suitable tool devices and while I have illustrated throughout my drawings a simple form of punching tool,,I do not limit myself to such a device as other forms of tools and for different purposes may be used to equal advantage.
The punching device shown in my invention and particularly in Figs. 8 and 9 consists of a moving member 38 which is suit 101 are each pro ably carried on the spider 85 by means of the clamping device 39 which has bolts 39' fitting into longitudinal slots 40. These slots extend entirely around the face of the spider and are for the purpose of placing the tool devices in the proper positions. Said moving member is provided with a head 40 which is in turn provided with a tool chamber 41. Into this tool chamber 41 ll prefer to slip a split bushing 42 and place the punching tool or male member 43 within same while the set screw 44 immediately above the said bushing tightens the. same and consequently the said tool and holds it in position. To provide for the horizontal adjustment of the said tool I have placed the set screw 45 immediately at the rear of the tool chamber 41 so that the same may bear against the rear end of the split bushing 42 and thus permit the tool therein to be moved forward as desired. In front of the head 40 on the moving member 38 is a liner plateinto which the conical end of the split bushing is adapted to, fit for properly centering the said tool; Immediately in front of the tool device as illustrated in F 1 and 8 is the die standard 46 which is in like manner secured to the spider 85 through means of the longitudinal slots 45 and is provided with a female die member for admitting the tool 43, and said die is held in a the block 48 secured by means of the screws 51 and for the purpose of illusA tration I have shown in Fig. 8 at 52 a piece of the stock resting within the tool atits full operating position. Between the die standard 46 and the movable member 38 is a spiral spring 53 which is adapted to place tension between the said parts and return the tool to its open position after the operation, and which will be later explained. Both sides of the table 2 are provided with a tripping device which consists of a body portion 55 adjustably mounted on the said table by means of bolts 56' and adjustable towards the center of table by means of the 7 bolts 57. This body portion has an idle roll 58 located in the center thereof and at the center of rotation of the shaft 36 carrying 1 the spider and engages the "movable member 38 in the die as later explained.
Toward the rear of the table 2 are shown two pairs of feed rolls. each 59 and 60 and these rolls are mounted upon suitable shafts housed in like manner as the rolls 7 and 8 at the forward end of the machine. rolls are driven by means of the bevelled gears 61 at the bottom end of the shafts can rying the rolls 59 engaging the like bevelled gears 62 on the shaft 63. Each pair of rolls 59 and 60 are geared together by the positive gears 64 and 65 so that they will always rotate at the same speed. Each .of-the pairs of rolls 59 and 60 is provided with a reeling device for collecting the 'finished material. Said devices are mounted on'plates 67 which are provided witha series of diagonal openings 68 for the purpose hereinafter explained. The reeling devices consists ofa set of sectors 69 adapted to form a circle with suflicient openings between the ends of thesame. Each of said sectors is pivotally mounted through a plate 70 and by a pivotal connection with hub nected with a link'74 which in turn is pivotally connected with the'foot lever which said lever is-a-lso pivota lly connected at 76 to the; side 1. As shown in Fig.6 around the shaft"7-2 is a sleeve 77 which is fixedly secured to and extends downward from the plate 67 so as to form a part thereof and said sleeveis provided with friction plate 78 which carries the gear '79 and said gear is slidably mounted on the collar 79 of said friction plate. 'Below the gear 79 is another friction plate 80 which is fixedly secured to the sleeve 77 and is held against said gear by means of the spiral spring 82 resting between the-nut 81 and the end of said frict-ion .plate. The gear 79 engagesan intermediate gear 83 which in turn engages a gear 8-1 01]. the shafts supporting the rolls'59, so thatposit-ive action is supplied from-said shaft to the said gear 79. The friction arrangement as just described will, however, explain the manner of providing for the decreased number of revolutions ofthe plate 67 as the roll of finished material. increases its diameter thereon. At a position near the lower end of the shaft-72and securely fixed thereon by-means of pin-97 is a collar'98 and a spiral spring 99 engaging between the said collar andbetween theend ofethe sleeve 77 for the purpose hereinafter explained. Between the revolvingplates 67 is'a pair of pressurelevers 85 which are pivotally connected at 86 while their extending ends 87 are connectedby a spiral spring 88. These members are provided at their outer ends with a block member 89, the purpose of which will be hereinafter explained.
Immediately beyond the feed rolls-7 and 8 and-adju-stably secured to the table by means ofthe bolts '90- is a guide which consists of two upright members 91 and 192, which I said members are so shaped as to carry the :material to its greatest advantage and said plates by reference to Fig. .11 will beseen to be adjustably mounted by means of small hard blocks 93 fitting into recesses in the same and thus providing the proper opening 94 for the passage of the stock. These guides carry the material or stock :until such time as it is adapted to enter between the die block 48 and liner plate 49.
Another of these guides 95 passes along from the position Where the tool disengages the said material and until itenters the feed rolls 59 and 60 and is of like construction,
except that it has secured to said member 91 a plate or safety bar 97 which extends into a point immediately beyond the conical end 50 of'the bushing 42 and is provided with: a curved face 96 for positively withdrawing the tool from the guide provided the spring 53 should in any manner fail to operate.
The operation of my improved device is as follows: Rolls of stock material-are placed upon. the stock drums 31 and the ends-thereof pulled forward and if the same should' be twisted or bent they are passed into the feed rolls 7 and 8 and on account of theircondition additional pressure is placed upon said rolls by means of throwingthe lever through its arm 30 which will cause the r end 29 of the said lever to press against the shaft 9 of the feed roll -7 and thus place additional ten-' sion on said roll. It is, of course, -understood that the machine has been set'in mo tion by means of pulling the handle ti: and thus throwing the clutch 5which will mesh the gears 17 and 18, causing the shaft 14to rotate. The bevelled gear 13' located on the shaft 14 and engaging with the bevelled gear 12 onthe shaft '9 will cause the'feed rolls to revolve, while the gear 19 will in like manner rotate the roll 7.
During this rotation the gear33, which is also fixed upon the shaft'ld, has caused the spider 35 to rotate through the gear 34c so' that the material passesfrom the feed rolls 7 and 8 and between the plates 91 and 92 of the guide member and is brought immediately between the die block 48 and the liner plate 4 9, and when the moving-member 35 of the tool strikes against the idle roll 58, carried in the member 55, it will force said moving member forward so that'the tool 43 will be pressed through thestock 52 and into the die 47. The extremeposition of the tool wi-ll be atthe time-the moving member '35 reachesthe innerextremity ofthe roll 58 and as it-recedes the spring 53 operating between the member 46 and movable member 38 will force the said tool back to its original position against the face 54. Should this action be sluggish the tool will strike against the curved face 96 of the plate or safety bar 97 and thus'bepressed backward to itsoriginal-positiori. Thema terial then passes into the guides 95 immediately beyond the said tool, while another tool may by this time, have reached the point where its movable member 38 has struck against the idle roll 58 when the operation would be again completed. The material travels along in the guide 95 and is received by the feed rolls 59 and 60, which said rolls are set in motion by the medium of bevel gears 61 operating the shafts on'said rolls through their meshing with the bevel gears 62 fixed onthe shaft 63.
It will thus be seen that during the time 7 that the material has passed from the feed rolls 7 and 8 until has entered. the feed rolls 59 and there has been tension upon the same and when free end passes from the'rolls 59 and 60 and engages the block 89 on the pressure lever 85, said lever may be pressed inward so as to turn the end of said material or hook it around one of the sectors 69 on the reeling device after which the said block 59 will bear upon the material as being wound according to the tension of tee spring 88 thus insuring a closely wound roll of finished material.
The plate67 containing the reeling device or sectors 69 is rotatively connected by means of the downwardly extending arm 109 on said sectors engaging the slots in the said plate so that the sleeve 7 7 of said plate which extends around the shaft 79f and is provided with the friction plates 78 and 80 engaging the friction gear 79 through the medium of the intermediate gear 83 engaging the gear 84: on the shaft of the feed roll 59 will cause the rotation of the entire reeling device. The blocks 89 on the pressure levers as c0ntinue to bear against the finished material as it is being rolled on to the sectors 69, while the difference in circumference of the material reeled will be taken care of throughthe medium of the friction plates '78 and SO, permitting the gear 79 to slip according to the tension on the spring 82 adjusted by means of the collar or nut 81.
-When a suflicient amount of finished stock has been reeled on to the sectors 67 and it is desired to remove same. the device may be stopped by means of the clutch 5 operated through the handle 6 and wires or other fas v tening devices maybe placed up through the slots 68 and tied around the material so as to keep it compact in form. The operator then steps upon the foot lever 7 5 which being pivotally mounted at the point 76 raised the shaft 72 through the medium of the link 7% so that the hub 71 of the reeling device will thus be raised and will draw the sectors 39 inwardly from engagement with the finished material through the connection of the links with the said hub, and said sectors will be permitted to be drawn inwardly by means of the downwardly extending arms 100 sliding in the slots 101 in the upper face of the plate 67. hen the foot of the operator is re leased from the lever 7 5 the spiral spring 99 acting between the sleeve 77 and the collar 98 will press said shaft downward and thus return the sectors to their ori inal )osition' on the plate 67. When two units are embodied in a machine such as shown in the present'case, the tool devices on the corresponding sidesof the spider would be staggered so as to pre vent shock to the machine or any. of its parts.
It is further to be noticed that when the movable member 38 in the tool device strikes the idle roll 58 on the member 55 the punch carried by said movable men her will gradually be pressed forward until at a positionv it will thus be seen that my improved punching machine as shown is operated entirely from one source of power, to-wit: the motor gears 18 engaging the gear 17 on the shaft 14 for operating the bevelled gears 13 on said shaft which in turn operate the bevelled gears 12 on the shafts 9 of the feed rolls 8 while the gears 19 positively connected to said shafts operate the gears 20 on the shafts carrying the rolls 7; the gears 33 engaging with and operating the gear 3 1- on the spider 35 for carrying the tool units around to their operating position; the gear 84- operating the gear 61 on the shaft carrying the bevelled gears 61 for operating in like manner the rolls 59 and 60; and the shafts of the rolls 59 carrying the gears 84 which engage the intermediate gear 83 which in turn engages the gear 7 9 for operating the reeling device.
While I have shown and described my in vention as a machine for punching holes in materiah-l do not limit my device to any distinct class of operation'as eyelet devices, stock for bottle caps, stock of predetermined equal lengths, punched or unpunched, or many other uses may be devised for the invention.
Various modifications in the design, construction and application of my improved punching machine may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of theinvention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

A metal Working machine comprising a rotatable drum, a tool consisting of a male and female member, said female member being mounted on the periphery of said drum and said male member being mounted on movable means on the periphery of said drum, means for feeding a strip of stock at the same linear speed as the speed of rotation of said tool, and means engaging said movable means to cause a reciprocatory movement of said male member through said stock.
5. A metal Working machine comprising a rotatable drum, a tool consisting of a male and female member both carried upon the periphery of said drum, feed rolls for feeding a strip of stock at the same linear speed as the speed of rotation of said male member, and means for causing said tool to intersect the path of travel of said stock.
6. A metal Working machine comprising a rotatable drum, a tool consisting of a male and female member both carried upon the periphery of said drum, guide members for guiding a strip of stock, feed rolls for feeding said stock through said guides at the same linear speed as the speed of rotation of said tool, and means for causing said male member to intersect the path of travel of said stock.
7 A metal Working machine comprising a rotatable drum, a tool consisting of a male and female member both carried by movable means on the periphery of said drum, guide members for guiding a strip of stock, feed rolls for feeding said stock through said guides at the same linear speed as the speed of rotation of said tool, and means engaging said movable means to cause a reciproca tory movement of said male member.
8. A metal Working machine comprising a rotatable drum, a tool consisting of a male and female member both carried upon the periphery of said drum, means for feedinga strip of stock at the same linear speed as the speed of. rotation of said tool, means for causing said male member to intersect the path of travel of said stock, and means for insuring the disengagement of said tool and stock.
9. A metal Working machine comprising a rotatable drum a series of tools each consisting of a male and female member all carried upon the periphery of said drum, means for feeding a strip of stock at the same linear speed as the speed of. rotationofsaid tools, and means for causing said male members to successively intersect the path of travel of said stocks.
10. A metal Working machine comprising a rotatable drum, a series of toolseachconsisting of a male and female member allcarried upon the periphery of said drum, means for feeding a strip,- of stock at the. same linear speed as the speed of rotation of said tools, means for causing said male members to successively intersect the path of travel of said stock, and means for insuring the disengagement of said tools and stock.
11. A metal Working machine having a rotatable series of tools adapted to successively engage a horizontally moving strip of stock, feed rolls for feeding said stock, and means for straightening the distorted ends of said stock.
12. A metal Working machine having a rotatable series of tools adapted to successively engage a horizontally moving strip of stock, feed rolls for feeding said stock, and means for exerting additional pressure 011 said feed rolls for straightening the distorted ends of said stocks.
13. A metal Working machine comprising a rotatable drum a male die and female die carried on the periphery of said drum, means for feeding a strip of stock in a path Where it passes between the said male and female die, and means for causing said male memher to intersect the path of travelof said stock.
14. A metal Working machine comprising a rotatable drum, a male die and female die carried upon the periphery of said drum, means for feeding a strip of stock in a path between the male and female die, and means for causing a reciprocatory movement of said male die through said stock.
15. A metal Working machine comprising a rotatable drum, a male die and a female die carried upon the periphery of said drum, means for feeding a strip of stock in a path between the male and female die and at the same linear speed as the speed of rotation of said die, and means for causing a reciprocatory movement of said male member through said stock.
16. A metal Working machine comprising a rotatable drum, a male die and a female die carried upon the periphery of said drum, feed rolls for feeding a strip of stock in a path between the male and female dies and means for causing said male member to intersect the path of travel of said stock.
17. A metal Working machine comprising a rotatable drum, a male die and a female die carried upon the periphery of said drum, guide members for aiding a strip of stock in a path between the male and female dies, feed rolls for feeding said stock through said guides, and means for causing said male member to intersect the path of travel of said stock.
18. A metal Working" machine comprising a rotatable drum, a male die and a female die carried upon the periphery of said drum, guide members for guiding a strip of stock in a path between the male and female dies, feed rolls for feeding said stock through said guides at the same linear speed as the speed of rotation'of said dies, and means for causing said male member to intersect the path of travel of said stock. l

A metal working machine comprising a rotatable drum, a female die carried upon the periphery of said drum, a male die carried by movable means upon the periphery of said drum, and means adapted to engage with said movable means to cause the male die to intersect the path of travel of said stock.
