BOSH COOLING PLATE.
Application illed October 16, 1924. Serial No. 743,978. Y
This'invention relatesl to cooling mechanism'and more particularlyto an improved form of bosh cooling plate and method of mounting the saine. e v
One object of this invention is to provide an improved form of bosh plate having means to permit the passage, of a sealing medium around the plate after itis mounted in the furnace wall.
Another object is to provide an improved form of bosh plate having a, gasket retaining flange'v around its rear end to provide for a gasket seal to retain the. sealing medium forced around the plate and to form a gastight joint. e
A further object is to provide a bosh coolingmechanism having the novel' construction, combination, and design of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.:
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation taken o the line I--I of Figure 2. f
Figure 2 is a top plan of 'a cooling plate embodying my invention. v F`gure3 is a rear elevation taken on the line III--III of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the. numeralf'l2 designates the furnace wall, which has a recess 3 formed therein for the reception of the hollow bosh cooling plate 4 and is enlarged at the outer or rear end for the reception of a casingv or frame 5.
The plate 4 is preferably tapered toward its forward end to form a wedge shaped structure, th'us facilitating its Withdrawal in l cess 3 without case it is necessar to remove it for replacei ment or repair. he plate 4 is provided with the usual inlet andoutlet openin 6 and 7 toprovide for the circulation o water or any other suitable cooling medium therethrough. e
The inner face of the frame 5 is cut away or recessed as at 8 to provide a space for a sealing medium 9, such as clay between thel side walls of the plate and the frame, and providingshoulders 10 and 1'1 at each end of :the frame.
The rear edge of the with a flange 12 adapte shoulder 10 and to compress and hold 'a suitable packing or gasket 14 between the shoulder 10 and plate 4iso as to form a gastight joint'between these members.
The frame 5 is adapted to be built per- (plate 4 is provided manentlyinto the'furnace wall 2and the to fit against the ing fluid therethrough, said body plate 4 is adapted to be inserted through the frame.
In order to seal and secure the plate y4 in I position, I provide a novel means to permit the forcing of a plastic sealing medium, such as clay, into the space between the plate 4 and frame 5 formed by the recess 8. A vertically disposed opening or passage 16 is formed through the rear wall of the plate 4 and opens into the space or recess 8 land a horizontal opening or inlet 17 is provided which opens into the opening or passage 16. The inlet 17 is screw threaded to provide for the connection of screw threaded end Aof a discharge pipe or conduit 18 leading from a clay cylinder or pump 19.` After the plate 4 is positioned inthe wall 2 the conduit 18 is connected with the inlet 17 and clay or 'any other suitable sealing medium is forced through the opening 16 into the space or recess 8 so as to completely fill the same and form a perfectly sealed and locked joint between the frame 5 and plate 4.
In order 'to facilitate the removal or withdrawal of the plate for repairs orl replacement I provide two pairs of lugs 21Yadapted to be engaged by the T-heads 22 of pulling bolts 23. The bolts 23 are adapted to have their lthreaded ends project through suitable apertures or openings in yoke members 24 which are engaged against the .frame 5 and f to have nuts 25 threaded thereon. It will be readily understood that by tightening the 'nuts 25 on the`bolts23 against the yokes 24 the plate 4 will be withdrawn from 'the rey disturbing the frame 5 or the furnace wall 2.,v
In all of the usual bosh cooling yplate constructions heretofore used, it is vnecessary to build them into the wall in order to secure a sealed joint and'to remove a portion of the furnace wall when it was desired to repair or replace the plate, while with a plate constructed in accordance with this invention the plate may be inserted, withdrawngand sealed without disturbing any Iof the brick wall.
1. A bosh cooling IJplate comprising a hollow body portion, 1 et and outlet o enings 1 communicating with said hollow bol y portion to rovide for the circulation of a coolportion being provided with a vertically disposed opening adjacent its rear .end and a horizonopening adjacent its rear end to permit the forcing of a sealing medium under pressure 4 around said plateafter said plate is in positon in said frame.
3. A bosh cooling mechanism comprising in combination a hollow cooling plate having inlet and outlet openings communicating therewith so as to provide for the circulation of a cooling medium therethrough, a frame into which the -rear end of said plate projects, said plate being provided with an opening adjacent its rear end to permit the forcing of a sealing medium under pressure around said plate after said plate is in position in said frame, and means for forming a sealing connection between the rearv edge of said plate and said frame to prevent the escape of said sealing medium.
4. A bosh cooling mechanism comprising in combination a hollow cooling plate having inlet and outlet openings communicating with the interior thereof to provide for the circulation of a cooling medium therethrough, a frame member mounted around the rear end of said plate and spaced from the side walls thereof, means for sealingthe rear end of said plate against said frame, and means adapted to permit the forcing of a sealing medium into the space between l ysaid frame and said plate after said plate is positioned in said frame.
5. A bosh coolinglmechanism comprising in combination a hollowy cooling plate having inlet and outlet openings communicating with the interior thereof to provide for the `circulation, of a cooling medium .therethrough, a frame member mounted around the rear end of said plate and, spaced from the side walls thereof, means for sealing the rear end of said plateagainst said frame, and an opening formed `in said plate to permit. the forcing of a sealing medium into the space between said frame and said plate after said plate is positioned in said frame.
6. A bash cooling mechanism comprising in combination a hollow cooling plate having inlet and outlet openings communicating with the interior thereof to provide for the circulation of a coolingv medium therethrough, a kframemember mounted around the rear end of said plate' and spaced` from the side walls thereof, a flange formed around the rear edge of said plate, and a gasket mountedv between said plate, and said' frame and adapted to be compressed by said flange to seal the rear end of said plate against said frame, and means adapted to permit the forcing bf a sealing medium intovthe space between said frame and said plate after said late is positioned in said frame.
7 A bosi cooling mechanism comprising in combination a hollow cooling plate-having inlet and outlet openin s communicating with the interior thereo to provide for the circulation of a cooling medium therethrough, a frame member-mounted around the rear end of said plate and spaced from the side walls thereof, a iiange formed around the rear edge of said plate, and a gaskct mounted between said plate and said frame and adapted to be compressed. by said flange to 'seal the rear end of said plate Qagainst said frame, and an opening formed in said plate to` permit the forcing of a plastic sealing vmedium into the space between said frame and said plate after said plate is positioned in ysaid frame.
' In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
