JKAJRJL MUJBELEISEN, 01E PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T SOHUTTE AND vJKOJEXR'IIFIING COMPANY, OF PHILADELPIEUIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA;
Application filed December 4., 1922.
To. all whom it may concern."
Be itknown that I, KARL MUHLEISEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philat delphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Heat-Exchange Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
- My invention relates broadly to heat exchange apparatus and more particularly to the means for connecting or securing a header to the tube-plate or sheet, the edge of which forms an expansion joint with the adjacent portion of the casing of such appara- .tus.
Une object of the invention is to provide- ..A further object is to provide an improvedconstruction of means for retaining packing in position around a tube-plate or sheet and a flange projecting outwardly therefrom for the purpose of sealing the joint between such sheet and the exterior casing. of the apparatus.
To these and other ends my invention comprehends the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter fully described particularly pointed out in the claims an as illustrated in the drawing forming a part of this specificatiom It is to be understood however, that my invention is susceptible of embodiment in other forms of construction than that shown and that changes in the details thereof maybe made within the scope of the claims without departing from the same.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view of a portion of a heat exchange apparatus provided with my'invention; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. I
Referring to the drawing: 1' designates a casing from which extends a tubular projection 2 which has a flange 3 to which the HEAT-EXCHANGE APPARATUS. I
Serial no. ceases. I
end of a conduit (not shown) is adapted to be secured. The oil or other fluid to be cooled enters the casing by way of the openlng through the tubular projection 2 and escapes from a'corresponding outlet opening (in known manner) adjacent the opposite end of the casing.
Situated within the casing 1 .are pipes or tubes 5 to which are secured baflie-plates 6 arranged as shown which operate to cause the 011 or other fluid which may enter through the tubular projection 2 to flow in a zigzagv direction through the casing 1 and about the pipes 5. The ends of the pipes or tubes 5 are secured within openings in a tubelate or sheet 8 in any known manner, whic plate or sheet is adapted. to move within the casing 1 due to the expansion and contraction of said pipes. It will be understood that the opposite ends of these pipes or tubes are also secured in atube-plate or sheet secured or fastened to-the opposite end of the casing 1 in any desired known manner.
The tube-plate or sheet 8 is provided. with a forwardly extending flange 9 the forward edge of which is provided with an inwardly extending narrow flange 10. The tube-plate is situated withinthe end of the casing 1 and fits the same closely as indicated at 12. The end portionof the casing 1 which extends beyond the tube-plate 8- is provided upon the innerside with a recess 15 which extends entirel' around the same, which recess surroun s the outer portion of the edge of the tube-plate 8 and also surrounds the flange 9 previously referred to. Packing material 16 is situated within the said recess around theedge portion of the tubeplate 12 and also around aportion of the flange 9. For the purpose of compressing the packing material 16 tightly within the recess .15 so as to hold it closely a ainst a with a flange 19 which extends outwardly from the adjacent end ofthe casing 1. The
' flange 19 is provided with screw-threaded openings 20 at intervals therein in which screw-threaded bolts 21 are secured. The
outer ends of these, bolts project through openin 22 in the flange 18. For the purpose o forcing the gland inwardly against the packing 16 nuts .23 are screwed on to the outer ends of the screw-threaded bolts 21 againstthe flange 18 to thereby force the gland 17 inwardly a ainst the packing 16.
For the purpose securing the header -25 to the forward edge portion of the flange 9 I have provided the inner end portion of around the same.
the said, header with a flange 26, the outer inner edge portion of which is provided with a recess 27 which extends entirely 1 The forward edge of the flan e 9 projects into the said recess and a was ier-like ring 30 of suitable material is interposed between the edge of said flange and the bottom of the recess 27 for the purpose of effecting a water and steam ti ht oint between the flanges 9 and 26. The 1nner edge of the washer-like ring member is seated against a shoulder at the inner edge of the recess 27 and the edge portion of said shoulder contac'ts'with the inner edge of the inwardly extending flange 10.
The flange '26 is provided at intervals with countersunk holes 31 which extend V therethrough through which screw-threadedbolts 32 exteiid. The inner sides of the heads of these bolts are tapered, as indi cated at 33, so as to form a tight fit within the countersunk portions of the openings 31. The inner ends of the screw-threaded bolts 32 are in screw-threaded engagement with screw-threaded holes 33 through a clamping member divided into three sections 34 which sections, when placed in end to end position as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawmgs correspond to the shape of the flange 9. In the construction as'shown e outer edges of these members 34 are situated underneath the inwardly extended flange 10 and the said members are each provided with a forwardly extending flange 35 the forward edge of which is adapted to contact with the inner end of the header 25. By
screwing the inner ends of the bolts 32 into the screw-threaded openings 33 through the members 34 the said members and the flange 26 may be caused to clamp tightly against the opposite sides'of the flange 10. By unscrewing and removing the screw-threaded bolts 32 the header may be readily disconnected from the flange 9, .as is clearly aparent. This having been done it also will e apparent that the sections 34 previously referred to may then be removed.
The water or other cooling medium enters the apparatus through a header (not shown) at the opposite end of the casing 1 and flows through the pipes or tubes 5 and escapes from the header 25 through an outlet port r opening at 37, all in known manner.
It will'be seen that by inyjinvention I have provided a simple and. eflicient novel said gland into the said construction of means whereby a header may be readily detachablysecured to the expansion tube-plate or sheet of a heat exchange apparatus and have also provided novel means whereby the joint between the latter and the casing may be more effectively sealed than heretofore has been the case by reason of the fact that the gland 17 may be tightened at will and as desired to effect a tightening and clamping action of the packing material 16 within the recess 15 surrounding the outer edge of the tubeplate or sheet 8 and the flange projecting forward therefrom.
It will also be seen that by my invention I have provided means whereby in case of a leak through the packing around the tubesheet or between the edge of the flange 9 'and the header the'leaking liquid will flow is taking place so that such joint ma be tightened independently of the other oint and Without interrupting the service of the apparatus. It will also be noted that by means of the arrangement embodying my invention it is impossible for one of the liquids to leak through a joint and mix with theother liquid.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In heat exchange apparatus, the combination of a tube-plate having a forwardly extending flangewhich terminates at its forward edge in an inwardly extending flange, a header having a flange, the outer edge portion of which is adapted to contact with the forward edge of the first named flange, a clamping member comprising a plurality of sections the outer edges of which are situ ated underneath the said inwardly extending flange, and means for clamping the latter flange between the said clamping member :and the flange on said header.
