Description

@ct. 2591927., v 1,646,993
J. R. COLLINS HAMMER Filed June 4, 1925 INVENTOR. John 12. Collins ATTORNEY.
Patented @et. 2'5, 192?. i
misses UNITESTATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. COLLINS, 0 WIGHITA, KANSAS.
HAMMER.
Application filed June 4,
My invention relates to improvements in hammers.
The object of my invention is to provide a hammer that can be used for ordinary pur poses and having a special feature to remove tacks and retain them for the purpose of redriving.
A further object of my invention is to provide a hammer that will facilitate the operator in removing a placard and simultaneously placing another.
A still further object of-my invention is to eliminate the unsightly quantity of tacks remaining when the card has been torn of? without removing the tacks.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a hammer having a plain poll for ordinary hammering, and the opposite end of the structure having a tack pulling and retaining means so constructed that the tack may be driven thereby.
These and other objects will hereinafter be more fuly explained.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the hammer and portion of the handle.
Fig. 2 is a transverse View of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the tack removing poll.
Fig. 1 is a detailed view of the tack demoving poll in its operative position removing a tack from a vertically positioned board, the said View being partly in section for convenience of illustration.
The drawings herein disclosed consist of a hammer 1 having an ordinary poll 2 on one end and on the opposite end a tack manipulating poll 3. Centrally positioned and laterally extending therefrom is a handle 1 engaging in an eye 4-.
The poll 3 has a rectangular face with portions of the plane thereof being removed for the following purposes: the step A is to provide a seat for a plate 5, the end of which snugly engages against a shoulder B, the said plate being attached thereto by means of a rivet 6. The step C is to provide a space D between the plate and step 0, said 1926. Serial No. 113,699.
space being of sutlicient head of a tack.
Longitudinally extending into the plate is a slot 7, the outer end being flared as at E to function as guiding means for a tack into the slot in the process of extracting the tack. The edges of the slot and flaring portions are bevelled as at F forming a sharp edge to enter beneath the head of a tack.
In Fig. 4: is shown the position of a tack 8 as it enters the slot by sliding the hammer upward and when the tack is removed it is positioned as shown by dotted lines G in Fig. 1 and Fig. 3; the tack being thus held renders it practical to redrive to full depth except the thickness of the plate which is then withdrawn for other strokes driving width to receive the the head to tight engagement.
It is now readily seen how tacks may be driven and redrawn consecutively.
One ot the principal values of my inven tion herein disclosed is the removal and placing of destiny cards on the sides of freight cars by which means the unsightly accumu lation of tacks is eliminated, also the fragmentary portion of prior cards being removed and furthermore not only salvaging the tack but a convenient driving manipulation means.
Such modifications may be employed as lie within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is In a hammer, a hammer having the face of one of its polls stepped to receive a plate, a second step to form a space between the plate and the poll, a plate positioned with the end engaging with the first said step, and means to firmly attach the plate to the poll, 21. slot in the end extending over the space, a bevel on the inside edges of the slot as drawing means for the tack, and the space as receiving means for the head of the tack preparatory to the redriving thereof, all as, and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN R. COLLINS.
