Description

Patented @et 35, 1927.
ANTHONY FACCI, OF ISTNGS, PEJTNSYLVANIA.
SQUARE, PLUME, LEVEL, AND KEASURE.
Application filed April 7, 1926.
T his invention relates to a combined level and square. and has for its object to Widenthe lield ot utility for such a tool, thus enhancing its salability.
According to this invention a square is provided with aV series ot leveling means, preferably located in one of its sides, and so arranged that the tool may be used to level with either' edge of either side oi' the square uppermost. or other leveling means are preferably readable with either face ott' the square upper most, whereby when one side ol the square is made thinner than the other, to enable the tool to be used simultaneously for squaring and leveling With the thin side.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. l is the preferred embodiment of my invention. Y
Fig. 2 is the side view of the upper portion of Fig. l, but With the edge bubble tube 20 located a little nearer the vertex.
Fig. 3 is the section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
ln the illustrated embodiment the square is provided with a thick side 1, having its other side 2 thinner and inserted between the faces of the thiclr side. As is usual in the art appropriate measuring graduations are provided on the outer edges of both sides. Within the side l are located tvvo pairs of bubble tubes 10, 11, 12, and 13, the tubes of each pair being parallel and the pairs being at right angles, in other words parallel With each side Jfor leveling ivith either side. Apertures 3. ll. 5, and 6 above each bubble tube facilitate reading the bubble. or convenience another leveling tube 20 is arranged adjacent With the inner edge of the side 1 and is protected by a guard plate having an opening 21 therein through which the position of the bubble is read.
1n operation the bubble tubes illustrated permit leveling with either side of the square and with either edge of either side uppermost. For example, it the side 1 of the square is used as a level with the edge 14 on the work then tube 10, which is observable from either side or above, indicates when the Work is level. It the edge 15 of the side 1 is down on the Work and the side 11i uppermest the bubble tube 1l. can then be read ^additionally the bubble tubes" Serial No. 100,321.
:troni either side or above. It the outer edge 1r or' the short side of the square is against the Work and dovvn, tube 13 is read `in a manner similar to that for reading the former tubes. lf the edge 16 of the short side is placed against the lWork or when, for example, the outer end o't the long side 1 is placed on a. support for the purpose of sighting along the edge 17 to tell Whether some object is level, the tube 12 is read. When leveling with the edge 15 down against the u'ork the tube 2O may be easily read if the ivorlnnans eye is over the Work. Since, as illustrated, the bubble tubes are observable from either tace 18 or 19 of the side 1, it will be apparent that since the side 2 or' the square is thinner and a shoulder formed between side 2 and faces 18 and 19, that this tool may be used for squaring with that side on top of the Work and side 1 having its edge 14.- contiguous to an edge of the Work, While simultaneously leveling With side 2 and reading either of tubes 12 or 13.
l claim:
1. A square comprising in combination a plurality of leveling means arranged for leveling with either edge of either side of the square uppermost and an additional leveling means on the edge of one side.
2. A square comprising in combination a plurality ol leveling means arranged for leveling with either edge of either side of the square uppermost and said leveling means being readable from either :tace or and Within one side oit the square.
El. A square comprising in combination a plurality of leveling means arranged for leveling with either edge of either side of the square uppermost and Within one side of the square.
ll. A square having itsy sides rigidly and permanently connected and comprising in combination a plurality of leveling means arranged. for leveling With either edge of either side of the square uppermost and Within one side of the square intermediate the edges thereof.
5. A. square comprising in combination a plurality of leveling means arranged for leveling with either edge olf either side of the square uppermost, one er the square being thin and placed between the planes of the faces of the other side of said square and o1" either side of the square uppermost', said with a shoulclel` between the thin side and leveling means comprlslng two paijfs of 4 6. A square. having one of its sides suhparallel, and the pairs being normal to each stantially longer than the other and Comother and inteimediate the edges of the long pi'ising in combination a plurality of leveling .side of the square.
