ROLLER TENSION DEVICE.

This invention relates to roller tension de vices for printing and serving machines and autographic registers and the object of the invention is to provide an arrangement whereby a series of rollers are held in con tact with a type cylinder in order to print a series of paper strips from the type cylinder.
Another object or the invention is to provide an arrangement whereby any or all of the series of rollers may be positioned out of contact with the type cylinder to allow threading of the paper strips between the rollers and the typecylinder.
A further object or the invention is to pro vide plates in which the shaft ends of the several rollers are mounted, the said plates being slotted to allow movement or the rollers radially toward or from the type cylinder.
Another object of the invention is to provide ameans for maintaining a pressure on all the pressure rollers so that the paper strips passing between the pressure rollers and type cylinder are printed.
lhese objects and the several novel teatures ofthe invention are hereinafter more fully described and claimed and the preferred form of construction by which these objects are attained is shown in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is an elevation of a portion of the side of sprinting and serving machine or an autographic register containing the roller te'nsiondevice. l

As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the printing and serving machine or autographic register is provided withtwo side frame members 1 having brackets 2 in which aroll of paper 3 is rotatably mounted.

The paper strip from the roll 3 is adapted to be brought into contact with the surface of the type Cylinder 4: in order that the type on the type cylinder will print the forms on the paper strip. A series of tour rollers 8 are provided as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and t which are adapted to 'rotate in contact with the type cylinder and'the paper strip from the paper roll 3 fed between the adjacent roller and the type cylinder in order to print the paper strilp. There are preferably two or more paper ro is provided in the printing and serving machine or autographic register, so that a strip from each paper roll may be -lfed between one of the two or more rollers and the type cylinder so that the two or more strips maybe printed simultaneously from the type cylinder. The rollers are each provided with shat't ends 9 as shown in Fig. 2 and these shaft ends are each provided with an annular groove 10 as shown in Fig. a. Two plates 7 are provided at each end 01' the type cylinder and are supported in spaced relation with the respective side 1 of the machine on spacing sleeves 11 through which the bolts 12 extend. As shown in Fig. 3 the plates 7 are supported on the bolts 12 andeachplate 7 is provided with a series of slots 1-3 which extend radially from the axis of the typecylinder. The shaft ends 9 ot the rollers '8 are rotatably mounted in the slots 13 and are movable radially to or from the type cylinder in thesaid slots. As shown in Fig. 1 each side of the frame is provided with two slots 14 in which the bolts 15 may be secured and the nuts which are threaded onto the bolts 15 extend into the space between the. plates 7 and sides 1 of the machine as shown in Fig. 2. A tension spring is provided for each pair of pressure rollers having a loop 16 encircling the nut on the bolt 15 and the ends 17 of these springs engage in the annulargrooves 10 in the shaft ends 9 of the rollers 8, the ends 17 of the springs being curved inwardly to constantly engage in the grooves 10. By this arrangement a constant tension is maintained on the rollers tending to force the rollers into contact with the type cylinder. The bolts 15 are adjustable longitudinally of the slots 1 1 to vary the tension the type cylinder and maintain a pressure on of the springs and as 'shOWn in dotted lines in Fig. 3 the bolts 15 may be adjustably mounted in slots 10 in the plates 7 instead of the slots 14 in the side frames. The slots 13 are each provided with a notch 18 opening from theside thereof so that the respective roller 8 may be lifted outwardly until the shaft ends 9 engage in the notches 18 and the roller is held in this position by the spring ends 17. In this position the rollers are supported in spaced relation withthe type cylinder so that the paper strips maybe easily threaded between each respective roller and the face of the type cylinder after which.
the rollers may be moved so that the shaft ends 9 engage in the slots 13 at which time the spring ends 17 force the rollers toward the rollersto hold the rollers and thepaper strips in engagement withthe type cylinder.
To'prevent complete withdrawal of the pressure rollers from the slots 13, a bolt 19 is secured in the outer end of each slot 13 asv shown in Figs. 2,3,4 and 5. lVith the device shown in Figs. 2, 3. an'd 5 four rolls of paper may be provided and the'strip from each roll of paper may be carried between one of the rollers 8 and the type cylinder to be printedby" the type cylinder. These four paper strips may be carried out from the type cylinder and brought together so that they may be withdrawn in unison and will be printed by the type cylinder as they are withdrawn. These strips are adapted to be brought over a writing bed with the printing on the four strips in registration but this registering mechanism forms no part of this present application.
An alternative form of construction is shown in Fig. 6 showing a mounting for a single pressure roll in which two plates 20 are each supported in spaced relation with a the respective side 1 on the supporting bolts 21-which are similar to the bolts 12 shown in Fig. 4. Each plateQO' is provided with a slot 22 for the shaft end9 ofthe roller and is also provided with a notch 23 opening into the slot 22 in which the shaft end 9 may be positioned to support the roller 8 in spaced relation with the face of the type cylinder. In this instance two springs 24 are provided each having an end which rides in the annular groove 10 in the respective shaft end 9 in the manner shown in Fig. 4 andthe opr 'posite end of each spring 2a is secured in a screw 25 threaded into the side 1 of the register casing. These springs maintain a pressureon the roll 8 and also tend to hold the roll 8 in position when the shaft ends 9 are engaged in the notches 23. From theforegoing description it becomes evident that the device is very simple and I efficient in operation, willnot easily get out oforder, is composed of few parts and is of consequent low manufacturing cost and provides a device which accomplishes the ob-Y j ects described.

rotatably mounted in the side frame memfill a series of rollers adaptedto rotate inc0n-- tact with the face of the type cylinder, each roller-being provided withshaft ends rotatably mounted in the respective slots of the said plate, springs supported between each plate and adjacent frame member and. tendmg to move the roller shaftends inwardly towardthe axis of thetype cylinder, means for adjusting-the tension of the springs, each slot being provided with a notch opening thereinto whereby the rollers may be moved outwardly until the shaft ends engage in the said notches, the springs being adapted to yieldably maintain the shaft ends in said notches to hold the rollers in spaced relation with the face of the type cylinder.

5. A roller tension device for printing and service machines and autographic registers comprising a type cylinder rotatably mounted on a fixed axis, a pair of plates mounted in spaced relation with one side of the autographic register each plate being provided with an aperture through which the shaft of the type cylinder extends, each plate being also provided with radially extending slots, a series of rollers extending between the plates and having shaft ends rotatably mounted in the slots in the plates, and yieldable means tending to move the roller shaft ends toward the axis of the type cylinder to hold the rollers in contact with the face of the type cylinder.

A roller tension device for printing and serving machines and autographic registers provided with a pair of side frame members, comprising plates mounted in spaced relation with each side frame member, the said plates being each provided with a series of slots extending radially from the axis of the type cylinder, a type cylinder rotatably mounted in the side frame members and extending between said frame members, a series of rollers each provided with shaft ends riding in the slots in the said plates, and a series of springs tending to move the roller shaft ends toward the axis of the type cylinder to hold the rollers in contact with the type cylinder.
7. A roller tension device for printing and serving machines and autographic registers having a pair of side frame members, comprising a type cylinder having shaft ends rotatably mounted in the side frame members, a plate mounted in spaced relation with each side frame member, each plate being provided with a slot extending toward the axis of the type cylinder, a roller provided with shaft ends rotatably mounted in the slots in the said plates, and yieldable means tending to force the shaft ends toward the axis of the type cylinder to hold the roller in contact with the face of the type cylinder.
