Application filed January 30, 1,924. Serial No. 689,389.
My invention relates to improvements in connecting plugs, and has todo more particularly with that class of plugs which are adapted to have connected thereto one or more instrumentalities. The plug of my invention. is particularly adapted for use in connection Ywith radio receiving sets to which may be connected a number of head phones through the medium of the plug and jacks" of the receiving set;` andan object of my invention is to construct a connecting plugof a few 'and simple parts, so arranged as to l 'be easily assembled and at the Sametime very durable and strong.
' It is desirable at times to connect more than one head phone set to 'the connectingplug. so that whenwtheconnecting plug is inserted in the vvarious jacks to Vconnect to the various circuits, more than one individual may listen in at the same time. Various types of plugs have been marketed to accom- .plish the connection of moretlian one head- Vphone set at'the same time such as multiple and series connection plugs and various type offscrew fastenersvv are provided for fastening the cordtips of the headphone sets tothe respective terminals of the con` necting plug. y'This typeof screw'terminal has its disadvantages becausewhenconnecting more than one set of headphones to the plug terminals, therord tips must'be held vin position while the terminal screw is tightened to hold theV cord tips in position. Theplug of my invention is of the series type in which the plug is vprovided with spring terminal means, `which obviates the necessity of screw terminals.V The cord tips 'Y ofitlie A head sets are inserted under the spring terminals and the' tension l of 'the spring terminals is such as tohold the cord tips in engagement therewith against displacement. Y
,A feature of my invention is the provi-v sion of a novel spring assembly, in which a `.pair of spring terminalsy areprovided. which are conductively connected'tothe tip and sleeve conductors of the plug, and in association therewith is av spring terminal com- Iprisii'iga pair. of spring members, insulated from the tip andvsleeve conductors, to pro- 'vide series connecting means' for a pair of head phone sets.
AAnother 'feature of my' invention is the provision of al conducting bolt, which. in
addition to serving asa conductor extending to the tip of the plug,it also serves as clamping means for securing the spring terminal combination in position and also for secur-` ing the sleeve of the plug in position.
For a more complete understanding of my invention, reference may i be had to the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters in the several views denote Y like parts, and in which Fig. 1 is a view of the connecting plug assembled Fig. 2 is a view of the rconnecting plugV with the handle or sleeve in section t clearly illustrate the plug; Fig. Sis a view similar to 'Fig 2 illustrating another view of the plug;
- Fig. l is an enlarged sectional View taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2;
Y Fig. 5 is an enlarged end view of the plug;
and
Fig. 6 is a disassembled perspective viewY ofthe spring terminals and an insulatingv block associated therewith.
Referring nowin detail to my invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the plug comprises a shallowcup shaped cup member2 when in 'position in said oritice 7. Avconducting stem or bolt 9 eX- tends through the insulating sleeve 4. its one end 10 being threaded and its forward end is provided with an integrally formed spherical shaped tip Contact member 11 which is insulated v from the conducting sleeve 3 by means ofthe insulating bushing 12. A spring terminal 13 angular in shape is provided witha disc portion 14 having a central orifice 15 of a size to receive the protruding end of the insulating sleeve 4:. The disc portion 14 of the: spring terminal 13 is provided with a pair of orifices 16 diametrically opposite each other which are adapted to receive a `pair of studs 17 of suitable insulation material which are Secured to the cup member 2 in orifices 18 by meansjof a drive or force tit, and which exf The disc portion 14. of the spring terminal 13 regi-sters with the inner i'ace of the cup member 2 oi;l the plug', but is insulated from the conducting' bolt 9 by means ot the insulatiire; sleeve 4,V and this terminal 13v terms the terininaio'fthe conducting sleeve 3 oi the plug. i also provided with a disc portion 20, and is provided with a central orifice 21 of'. a size to receive the protruding` end of the insulating sleeve 4.` The discl portion 20v ot' the terminal 1.9 is also providedwvi-th a pair ot' dian-ietrically opposite orifices 22 Whirh are adapted to receive the studs 17. An insulating plate or bushing- 23 provided with a central orifice oit a size'to receive the protruding' end of the insulating; bushing 4 and a pair ot diametrically opposite orifices oit a size to receive the studs 17 rests between the disc' portion 14 of the'terminal 13 and the dise portion 2O of the terminal 19 to' insulate one from the other, tbel said insulating sleeve 4 insulating, the terminal 19 from the connecting bolt 9. I

An insulating plate or bushing 29, provided with a central oritice ot a size/to receive the connecting bolt 9, and' a pair oft diametrically opposite orifices ot a size to receive the studs 17, rests between .the disc portion 25V of the terminal 24 andthe disc portion 2O otthe terminalY 19 to insulate one from'f'the other. The threaded end 1() of the conducting bolt 9 protrudes through the aligned central orifices 15. 21 and-27 inthe Vdisc portions 1.4, 2() and 25 of the terminals 13, 19 and 24 and the centralorilices in the insulating bushings 23 and 29 and a slotted nut130 having' screw threaded engapjement with the threaded end 1() ot the conducting bolt 9 is screwed down against the tace of thedisc 25 ot the terminal 24 and clamps the terminal discs 14, 20 and 25 and iinmlatingH bushings 23 and 29 in position. and at the same time terms a conduetinti` means between the tip contact11 of the coni'lucting bolt 9 and its terniinal. 24. The studs 17 which as before descril'ied are of suitable insulatingn ed` spring member Which bifurcations form,V
A terminal 19 angular in shape a. pair of spring members 31 and 31', formed to bend inwardly. The terminal 24 is also provided With a rearwardly extending spring member 32 formed to bend inwardly. An
'insulating block is provided Witha central oritice 34 o' a size to receive the end 1t) ofthe cmducting bolt 9. An annular recess 35 concentric with the orilice 34 is provided, into which, the nut 130, which clamps the terminal members 13, 1,9 andr24 and insulating bushings 23 and .29 together, extends to permit the block 33, to rest against the face of the d isc 25 ot the terminal 24. The face 36' of the. block 33, which rests against the tace ot the disc 25 of the terminal 24 is also provided. with a pair of diametrically opposite oi'itiees 37, inte which the end of the studs 17 `extend toprevent turningr of the block 33 on the conducting bolt 9. The block 33 is secured on the conducting bolt 9 by means ot aislotted nut 38 which has screw threaded terminal 19 and the spring' members 3() and 32 of the terminals 13 and 24, and force them outward against their normal tension. The faces 40 and 41 ot'the block 33 are provided resi'iectivelv with grooves 42 and 43, there beine; two t@hooves 42 in the tace 40 in juxtaposition with they spring members 30 and 32 ofthe terminals 13 and 24, and grooves 43 ot which there are tivo in the fece 41 of the block 33' are in juxtaposition with the spring' members 31 and 31 ot the terminal 19. A 'Form oi cord tip that may be used is illustrated at 45 in Fi .3. Y y
Non' to insert t 11e cord tips suclras 45 of a head phone set into engagement with the tip terminal 24 :and sleeve terminal 13 of the plugr all that is nece 'ary is to force the cord tip intothe two grooves 42 in the tace 4() of theblock 33 against the normal tension ot the` .spring members 30 and 32 ot' the terminals 13 and 24. The tension of the spring members 3() and 32 vare .such as tohold the cord tips in the grooves 42 in the face 4() ot the block 31 against displacement'and insure a positive connection between the spring memliers 30..^md 32 of the terminals 13 and 24 and the cord tips at all times.
I provide a protective sleeve or handle 46 of suitable insulating material one end of .which threaded and has screw threaded engagement with the cup member 2 ,of the plug. This handle or sleeve serves as a cover or enclosingT member for the plug and also as a handle for grasping the pluo'.` y VThe handle 46`is alsoprovided with ka pair of member orifices 47 for-the stay cords of thehead set cords for purposes as will now be described.
`To `relieve'the strain from the cord, should theV plug be "accidentally withdrawn by grasping the cord instead of the handle of the plug,a stay cord is inserted through the orifice 47 in the handle 46 of the plug and tied so as to allow slack in the individual conductors leading tothe'cord tips so that Vthe cord tips will not beaccidentally withdrawn from under Athe lspringmembers and 32 ofthe terminals 13 and 24.
Assuming that another head phone set is to-be connected to the plug of my invention, the cordtip of the head phone set connected to spring memberv 32. marked 1 in thedrawing for the vpurpose of'description is withdrawn from `the groove 42 in the face 40 of block 33and inserted in the groove 43 in the face V;41 of the block 33 under'the spring member 31-of the terminal 19 opposite the spring member 32 marked 1.v 'The cord tips of the secondheadphone setto be connected to the plug are now insertedin the. grooves 42 and T43-in thefaces. 4 0fand 41 of the block33 f under the spring member 30 marked 2 in the drawing of the terminal13 and the spring member 31l ofthe terminal 19. AFrom the previous description'it `will be remembered that the terminal 19 isinsulated from the terminals `13 and 24 sand the conducting bolt 9, but as the spring members30 and 32 of the terminals 13 and 24 are conductively connectedto the tip and sleeve conductors 11 and ySit isreadily apparentthat when the cord tips of one head set arevconnected to thezspring membersv 32 and 31 of the terminals 24 and 19 and the cord tips of another head set are connected to the spring members 30 and 31 of theterminals 13 and 19 that the two head phone .sets are thus connected in series. y f
It may be seen that ity is avery simple matterto -connect a head phone set to the *plug of 'amy inventioirwithout the 'usual trouble of' loosening` screws and v.holding the cord tips in position while the screws are again tightened, and especially so when tr ing to connect two head phone sets to the plug at the same time.
VJhile I have described a particular form of my invention it is to be understood that changesv and modifications will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art and I therefore aim to cover all such changes and modifications as come within the spirit and scope of the appended claims..
