Description

Patented Oct. 25, 1927.
JESSE L. cARRiGAN, or BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.
SCREEN ADJUSTER.
EppI-icatton. l'ed January 223. 1926. Serial* No.y 8355176;A
My invention relates to window screens, and is more particularly concerned with the ready and convenient manner of adjusting the spring mounted shoes or guides which the screen carries at one side to cause same toengage or disengage the rail in the sash frame on which they slide and thus permitv the screen to be easily and quickly mounted or dismounted,
In sliding window screens of the type in general use each adjustable shoe or guide has been set against the rail by means of a screw which is run through the side of the screen frame and engages under the spring opposite the shoe, thus acting to force the shoe outwardly against the rail of the frame. These screws are the source of much trouble in the removal and replacement of the screens; they are diflicult to be handled by women; they require more or less skilled labor for the proper adjusting and setting of the screens; and the manipulation of the screws causes frequent damage to the screen wire opposite them.
The object of my invention is to devise a very simple means readily accessible and capable of quick and positive action which will set the shoe with the desired compression against the sash frame rail so asto readily clamp the screen in position and which may be with the greatest ease thrown out of operating position to release the screen and permit of its removal from the window frame.
More particularly my invention'consists in interposing behind the spring support for each shoe a cam having a plurality of flat faces Awhich is adapted to be operated by a handle or any suitable instrument applied from the front of the screen inside of the window. The flattened faces enable the cam to hold the shoe interlocked lwith the frame rail at intermediate positions.
My invention further comprises the novel details of construction and arrangements of parts, which in their preferred embodiment only are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Fig. 1 shows a horizontal cross-section through a sash with a screen mounted in position.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1,wit-h the screen trame; broken away to` show theshoe .controlling camI in elevatiom Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated, I show the casing l on the window frame 2, the casing having vertical rails or runners 3 adapted to receive the window screen which comprises side frame members 4, one of which is recessed at 5 to form a guide for the rail 3 at the other side or' the window. The usual type of springs 7 are mounted in the recess 5 and theinside edge of the recess 6 is reduced in width so that by shifting the screen to the right, Fig. l, it will be free to pass the rail 3 that inormally engages in the recess 6. In Fig. 2 I show the type of spring means in the recess 6 for engaging its respective rail 3, each means comprising a flat spring 9 which is secured to the inner wall 8 of the recess 6 by means of screws or pins 10L which engage in elongated vslots in the ends of the springs. At its center the spring 9 carries a shoe 11 which is shaped and adapted to engage the rail 3 and has tongues 10 which mount it on thespring. Behind the spring and partly in a .recess 12 formed in the. screen wall 8 I mounta polygonal cam 13 upon an operating shaft 14 whichextends through the inside face of the screen side 4 so as to be accessible from within the house for manipulation. Preferably, the exposed side of this shaft is slotted to provide for the engagement therewith of a screwdriver so that the cam.can be shifted to force the shoe outward against the rail 3 or to leave it free to spring back from the rail. Any other suitable means tomanipulate the cam may be provided. The cam is provided with any desired number of fiat faces so that it can be set to various adjusted operating positions and in these variousposi- `tions it will set the shoe to accommodate theI tures Which I express y Wish to emphasizel in connection With my present invention. e
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim as nevv anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
" Ina Window screen having side' grooves and spring rail engaging elements ,mounted therein part of Which carry shoes, of an adjusting means for the spring elements carrying shoes comprising for each such springlelelnent a polygonal cam having Hat Y iaces and set ina counterst1nli .,iecess in a sideigroove vand having itsv operating axis projected throughtheinner side of the sash frame Substantially'"`atV right angles thereto y and provided with an operating element substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signa- 25 ture.
