Application led'J'une 21, 195%.-l Serial No. 117.389.
This invention relates to single-course car roofsV of the all-steel riveted-up type wherein heavy gage roofing sheetsextend from side plate to side-plate of the car and are riveted thereto and to each other to form a.
load Asustaining structure.
The principal object ofl the present invention is to produce a roof of light weight and of great strength and rigidity.y @therf objects are to facilitate the manufacture and assembly of the sheets and to effect greater economy of material. The invention. consists principally in forming the sheets with steps of substantially the same width and l5 depth that lead inwardly from the sides of the sheets to the middle thereof and extend transversely of the car Overthe side plates thereof. The invention also consists in the parts and the arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
AIn the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a portion of the car roof embodying my invention;
Fig. 2-is a longitudinalsection through the roof at the ridge on the line 2.-2 in Fig. l; u y
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section through one half ofthe roof, the section being taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. l;
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectionthroughrthe eaves the line 4 4 in Fig. l; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the eaves end portion of a modified form of roof. sheet.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing, my invention is shown in connecftion vwith a car havingZ-bar side plates 5 arranged with their webs horizontal and with one flange/in and extending upwardly. Metal roof sheets 6 extend from eaves to eaves of the car and are provided at their eaves ends with depending flanges 7 that overlap the upstanding inner flanges of the side plates and are rigidly secured to the outer faces thereof by rivets 8. The roof sheets slope downwardly on opposite sides of the ridge to form a pitch or arcuate roof and have flat side marginal portions that are overlapped and secured together by rivets 9.
portion of the roof at4 one of the joints on -l Angle-shaped supporting members 10 are located beneath ythe eaves end portions of the overlapped side .marginal roof portions ofthe.sheets,`with one flangev securedto the inner face ofthe side plates by the rivets that secure the depending eaves flanges 7 of t-he sheets thereto. The other flange of the supporting members extends inwardly and is secured to t-he under side of the lap joints by means of the securing rivets 9 therefor.
Running boards 11 extend longitudinally of the' carat the ridge and rest on and are bolted to the lateral top flanges of Z-shaped runningvboard saddles y12 whose lateral base flanges rest on the overlappedside marginal.
portions ofthesheets and areV secured thereto by securing rivetsl 9 therefor.
The roof sheets shown in Figs. 1 to 4 are provided with a series of vertically offset surfaces 13 that extend transversely of the car from end to end of the Sheets where they are curved down and merge into the flat surfaces of the depending eaves flanges 7 of said sheets. The offset portions of the sheets are preferably ofcorresponding width and depth .and are offset both verticallyl and horizontallywithrelation to eachother to form a series of flat steps that lead inwardly from the opposite sides of the sheets to the middle thereof` and extend parallel to the Y sides ofthe sheets from end to end thereof. The sheets shown in Figs. 1 to 4 have their highest surface located 'at the side margins of the slieetand their lowest portions at the middle thereof,` the low middle portions of the sheets being connected to the higher side marginal portions thereof by a succession of raised surfaces, forming an even series of steps leading inwardly from each side of the sheet to the middle thereof.
In the modified form of sheet 6a shown in Fig.5, the `-highest surface is at the middle of the'sheet'and the lowest surface is at the margins thereof; and said high vmiddle portion of said sheet is connected to the lower marginal portions thereof by series of successive upwardly offsetv surfaces 13a. The offset portions extend longitudinally of the sheet from end to end thereof where they are curved downwardly. to meet the depending eaves flanges 7a thereof.
Among the advantages of the present construction are the cheapness with which the roof sheets may be made, due principally to the simplicity of their design and its adaptaloilityA tothe die pressing operation, their Ojreat'strength fora given `amount ofithe metal and the facility with which they may be applied to the root. It is noted that the shape of the sheets enables ample Width and depth of the sheets to be obtained Without making t-lie vertical walls or horizontal surfaces thereof excessively Wide; and it also erinits the sheets to he nested or stacked for shipment. It is also noted that the forming of the sheets with successive stepsthatex inthe drawings.
