PROCESS FOR FOBMING DESIGNS.
The present invention relates to processes for forming designsof desired shape or configuration on substances capable of being rendered plastic byheat; and its object is to provide such a processl whereby permanent designs may be formed readily and economically on such substances.
This Objectis attained by the process particularly described in the body of this speci- 1o tication, and preferably by means of the apparatus hereinafter described and villustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Y Figure 1 is a plan View of a sheet of material displaying certain designs formed thereon; i. e., letters of the alphabet; Y Figure 2 is a sectional view (enlarged) of the left-hand end portion thereof taken on line 2.--2 of Figure l;

In these drawings is shown a sheet designated generally 1 complrlising a base 2 composed of a substance w ch may be4 rendered plastic orsoft by being subjected to heati. e., bituminous material or the like-A-and an outer coating 3 of granulated material (such as slate or rock articles) adhering to the base by reason o being partially embedded therein while the same was heated to a suiiciently soft or lastic condition, such sheet thus composed eing a so-called asphalt shingle or rooting strip of a well-'known type.
To form designs on this sheet, areas thereof whose outlines define the desired design are heated sufficiently to soften or render plastic corresponding areas of the base 2, the
remainder of the base outside such areas not being thus heated. The substance of the base within these heated areas rises (under the heating action) between the particles 3,
so that while thus hot and plastic anulated particles 4 of slate, rock or the e are applied to such plastic areas and partially embedded therein; whereupon, such particles 4 bein of a color different from that of the particles 3, thus display in contrast therewith the desired design, as (for instance) the letters of the alphabet and punctuating periods shown in the drawings.
In carrying out this process, apparatus may .be employed comprising a `plate 5 of suliciently heat-nonconducting material, as
'(for instance) asbestos, and having openings lO therethrough outlining the desired design is laid on the coated surface of the sheet l, and heat is applied to the outer suriace of said plate, as by impressing thereon the hot member 6 having a ilat under surface 7 contacting said sheet. This member is held in such contact long enough to soften the portions of the base 2 which underlie and` register in position with said openings, and thereupon (the member 6 being revmoved) the particles 4 are applied to the heated areas and partially embedded there- 1n while plastic.
A base 2 not coated with particles 3 may be thus h eated in desired areas, whereupon particles 4 may be applied thereto to display the design; or, a base 2` coated. with particles 3 may be heated in design-defining areas so that the substance of the base may rise between said particles and thus display the design without applying particles 4 to such heated and plastic areas.
I claim: A
1. The process o f forming designs on a substance capable of being madlplastic by heat, which consists in heating s cient-ly to render plastic such area only of said substance as defines the design and then applying to and embedding in said plastic area granulated material contrasting in appearancewith the remaining area of said substance.
v2; The process of forming designs on a substance lcomprising a base capable of be-J ing made plastic by heat and a. coating of particles embedded therein, which Vconsists in heating suiciently to render plastic such area only of the base as defines the design and to cause said plastic substance ofthe base to pass outwardly vbetween said'pary ticles.
3f The process of forming de signs on a substance comprising a base capable of being made' plasticby heat and a coating of' particles embedded therein, which consists in heating sufficiently to render plastic such area only of. the base Aas denesxthe design and to cause said plastic substance of the base to pass outwardly between said particles, and then applying to and embeddin in said plastic area of the substance of the base granulated material'contrasting in appearance with the first-mentioned particles.
4. The process of forming designs on a sheet compris-ing a substance capable of being made plastic by heat, which consists in applying to said substance a 'plate having heat-conducting openings therethrough defining the design, and supplying sufiicient heat to the substance through the openings to render plastic the area of the substance registering with the openings.
5. The process of forming designs on a sheet comprising a substance capable of b eing made plastic by heat, which consists 1n applying to said substance a plate having heat-conducting openings therethrough defining the design, and supplying suiiicient heat to the substance through the openings to render plastic the area of the substance registering Withpthe openings, and then applying to and embedding in such plastic area granulated material contrasting in appearance with the remaining area of the sheet.
6. TheI process of forming 'lesigns on a roofing sheet containing bituminous material capable of being made plastic by heat, which consists in heatmg suiiicientlyto render plastic such area only of said sheet as defines the design and then applying to and emg bedding in said plastic area granulated material contrasting in appearance with the remaining area of said sheet.
7. The process of forming designs on a rooting sheet comprising a base containing bituminous material capable of being made plastic by heat and a coating of particles embedded therein, which consists in heating suiiiciently to render plastic such area only of the base as defines the design and to cause said plastic substance of the base to pass out- Wardly between said particles.
8. The process of forming designs on a roofing sheet comprising a base containing bituminous material capable of being made plastic b he-at and a coatin of particles embedde therein, which conslsts in heating sufficiently to render plastic such area only of the base as defines the design and to cause said plastic substance of the base to pass out- Wardly between said particles, and then applying to and embedding in said plastic area of the substance of the base granulated material contrasting in appearance with the first-mentioned particles.
