Cloth Bag. No, 164,550 PatentedJune15J875.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS W. GRINTEB, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOSEPH F. JEWETT, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTH BAGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,550, dated June 15, 1875; application filed May 1,1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. GRINTER, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Satchel-Bottomed Cloth Bags, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to produce in a neat and simple form a cloth bag provided with a bellows-fold satchel bottom, the wellknown advantage of which o er the ordinary bottom being that it gives to the bag square unprotruding corners and a flat bottom, enabling the bag to stand erect without the aid of a support, which is a thing of great utility in any kind of a sack.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the cloth blank folded in the center, ready to be stitched on either side to complete the bag. Fig. 2 shows the same with the bottom folded over and the seams made. Fig. 3 is a view of the bag bottom upward, when turned and distended for use.
In the manufacture of my improved bag, I take a strip of cloth of the width of the bag, but double the length of the required bag, and also of its bottom; This I fold on a center line, B, bringing the two ends together, as shown in Fig. 1. I then make a fold at the lower end, on the line B, the width I desire the bottom to be. This fold being turned at the bottom, I now run seams a and a, one on each side of the bag, passing directly through the folded parts, thereby fastening it down at the same time the side seams are made, as shown in Fig. 2.
If the tube from which the bag is to be formed has been previously made, Imake the bottom fold, and simply stitch it down on each side, which gives me the well-known bellowsfold satchel bottom, such as shown in my paper bag patents.
After the bag has been made it is turned the other side out, when it is ready for use.
I claim as my invention A bellows-fold satchel-bottomed cloth bag constructed by doubling the cloth strip or blank upon itself, folding over a lap at the bottom, and stitching the lap and the sides of the bag together, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
THOMAS W. GRINTER.
