PAPER BAG AND METHOD OF MAKING THE SAME. No. 341,720. Patented ay 11, 1886..
6y hnls Jlbborneys SAMUEL BAYLE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PAPER BAG AND METHOD OF MAKlNG THE SAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,720, dated May 11,1886.
Application filed February 3, H86.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BAYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain Improvements in Paper Bags and in the lllethods of Making the Same, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of my invention is to simplify the folding of bellowssided paper bags, so that they may, when desired for use, be readily opened out into the satchelbottom form, and this objectl attain as fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the bellowssided bag with closed bottom before it is folded. Fig. 2 is a view of the same in the reverse position. Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of the bag in the dilferentstages of folding. Fig. 5i1lustrates the finished bag; and Fig. 6 illustrates the same when opened outinto the satchel-bot tom form, ready for use.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, A A arethe flat sides, and B B the bellows sides, of the tube, all four sides being equal in width. The bottom of the tube is closed by a folded and pasted flap, a, or in any convenient manner. I then open out the side folds, beginning at the open end of the bag, in the manner illustrated in Fig. 3, and as indicated by the arrows, so that the flat sides A A will become folded, as illustrated in Fig. 4, into the bellows sides, while the sides 13 B will be opened out. This reversing of the flat sides and bellows sides, owing to the equality in width, causes the corners of the closed bottom to be pulled over in the act of opening the side folds, B B, thereby converting these corners of the closed bottom into cross-folds over the newly-formed Serial No. 190,717. (No model.)
flat faces of thebag, as shown in Fig. 4. The
bag is then finished by flattening out these folds to the form illustrated in Fig. 5, making a folded bag, which is ready for the market, as a new article of manufacture. WVhen it is to be used, the folds described will lend themselves to the ready opening of the bag into the square satchel bottom form illustrated in Fig. 6.
The sides A A and B B of the bag being allof the same width, as described, the bag, when opened out, as shown in Fig. 6, will form a perfect square. This equality of the sides, and consequent reversibility, forms an important characteristic of the bag, for if the sides were unequal in width the opening out of the bellows sides and the folding of the corners in the manner described could not be accoinplished successfully.
I claim as my invention 1. The mode herein described of folding paper bags, said mode consisting in opening out the bellows sides, folding the flat sides of the tube into bellows form, and thereby folding the corners of the closed bottom into crossl'olds over the new flat sides, substantially as specified.
2. As a new article of manufacture, the bellows-sided square paper bag having the corners of the closed bottom lying in cross-folds over the flat faces of the folded bag, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAML. BAYLE.
