Description

J.' s. MAC NELL THROTTLING DEVICE Filed April 13, '1922 INVENTR WTNESSES: MS2@ scope of the invention, accompanying claims.'
What I claim as my invention is: i 1. The combina-tion `With an Vexplosion chamber containing liquid and gas, ot an expansion A therewith and with the atmosphere, and means permitting substantially tree and direct communication with the atmoslihcre for automatically restricting the' exit from the expansion chamber after a. predetermined amount et' gas has escaped. 2. The combination with an explosion chamber containing liquid and gas. of an expansion chamber provided with' a. plurality ot openings to the atmosphere and having communication with the said chamber and means for automatically effecting the closure of one ot said openings aiter the occurrence of an explosion.
3. The combination with an explosion chamber containing liquid and gas. ot a throttling device mounted exteriorly thereof and having a plurality ot' openings communicating with the atmosphere and a check valve. Jfor closingl one or" said openings under asurge of pressure from Within the chamber. il. The coiihination with an explosion chamber containing liquid. and gas, of a as defined hy the throttling device mounted exteriorly thereofl and provided with a tortuous passage which establishes a direct and an indirect passage between the atmosphere and the interior of the chamber, and ineens for partially closing the direct passage to the atmosphere under predetermined conditions. f Y
5. The combination `with an explosion chamber coi'itaining liquid and gas, ot' .a throttling device mounted exteriorly thereof and provided with a tort-nous passage which establishes a. direct and an indirect passage between the atmosphere and the .interior of the chaxnier, and a. check valve for partially closing the direct passage exit to the atmos- 1 chamber having communication discharge passage, ot a throt-vy time' device lun-*ingr coinmunication'ivith the chamberA and provided. with means for permitting a comparatively 'free exit or the liquid and. gas under rapid expansion and with means to dellect the fgas to other parts of the passage and retardv the flow ol the vented mixture at an interval after the oc currence oi' the rapid expansion.
8. The combination with an explosion .zhainher containing liquid and and having a. vented discharge ot a throttling devicehaving communication with the chamber and providedwith means to permit a comparatively free exit of the liquid and under rapid expansion and with means to deflect the to other parts ot the pas sage for retarding the Iloiv of the vented mixture at an interval after the occurrence ot' the rapid expansion and toseparate and return the liquid to the tank.
5). The method of venting an explosion chamber whicii consists in discharging the gas into a vented niuliler normally open to the atmosphereend in partiallly closing commi nication het-Ween the atmosphere' and the muffler after the gas normally occupying the niuliler has heencxpelled. i
In testimony whereof, l have hereunto subscribed my 1922.
JOHN MACNEILL.
