Description

11 1927 A. s. MiTCHELL Oct.
CORD HOLDER Filed Jag, 27, 1927 Patented Oct. 11, .1927,
UNITED STATES ALBERT S. MITCHELL, OF TACOMA, WASHINGTON.
CORD HOLDER.
Application filed January 27, 1927.
This invention relates to and has for one of its objects to provide a novel, simple and inexpensive device for use in connectionwith a wrapping` table or counter below which a ball or spool of cord is mounted and which is provided with an opening through which the free end of the cord passes and through which the cord is drawn while a bundle or package is being tied, the invention being adapted to hold or prevent the free end of the cord from passing downwardly through the table or counter in order that it may e always readily accessible. n
lVith the foregoing and other obgects in view, the invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a view in side elevation illustrating the application of the device or cord holder to a wrapping table, and
Figure 2 is a sectional view tak-en on a plane extending vertically and centrally through the cord holder and top of the wrapping table. A
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, l designates a wrapping table, 2
a spool of cord suitably mounted below the table, and 3 an opening in the top of the table through which the free end ofthe cord passes and through which the cord is drawn in the act of tying bundles or packages. To prevent the free end of the cord 2 from passing downwardly through the openingl 3,
whereby to insure its occupying a position upon the top of the table where it will be easy of access, a cord holding device 4 is secured to the under side of the top of the table.
The cord holder 4 comprises a hollow body 5 which is of inverted conical formation.
The body 5 is provide-d with a cover 6 which extends laterally beyond the same, and the body is provided in its lower end with an opening 7. The cover 6 is proyided with an opening 8 which is axially alined with the opening 7, and a tube 9 is secured to the cover about the opening therein. Lugs l0 are secured to and extend laterally from the upper end of the body 5, and the extended portion serial No. 164,075.
of the cover 6 overlies the lugs l0. A ball 11 which is larger diametrically than the opening 7 is loosely mounted in the body 5.
The cord holder 4 is adapted to be secured to the under side of the top of the table l with its'opening 8 in registration with the opening 3, and it is secured in place by screws l2 which pass through the lugs 10 and extended portion of the cover 6, the screws also functioning to secure the cover to the body 5. The cord 2 passes through the body 5 and through the openings 7 and 8 as well as through the opening 3, and is held against downward movement by the ball 11 which clamps it between itself and the body 5, in the manner shown in Figure 2. The ball ll while preventing the downward movement of the cord 2 will permit it to be freely drawn upwardly. An implement not shown and consisting of a rod having a hooked end, may be passed downwardly through. the openings 3 and 8 and engaged with the ball 1l to hol-d the ball above and to one side of the opening 7 so as to permit the free passage of the cord 2 through the holder 4 and opening 3, the tube 9 facilitating the passage. of the cord through the openings 8 and 3. After the cord has been passed through the holder and top of the table the implement is removed whereupon the ball will return to its normal position and hold the cord against downward movement. The length of the body 5 is considerably greater than the diameter of the ball l1 to permit the ball to be moved above and held to one side of the opening 7 in the manner and for the purpose stated.
It should be understood that the 'drawing isr merely illustrative and does not pretend to give exact proportions. Furthermore, the said drawing is illustrative of a preferred construction, it being my expectation that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scop-e of my invention.
That is claimed is A cord holder comprising a hollow body of inverted conical formation and provided in its lower end with an opening, lugs secured to and extending laterally from-` the upper end of the body, a cover applied to the upper end of the body and extending laterally beyond said end With its extended portion in Contact With the lugs, the cover being provided with an opening axially 5 alined with the opening in the lower end of the bod;7 and having a depending tube surrounding the opening therein, fastening elements passing through the lugs and cover.l and a ball loosely mounted in the body and having a diameter greater than the Idiameter l0 of the opening at the lower end of the body and less than the lengt-hof the body.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature-` A ALBERT S. MTCHELL.
