TWINE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 25, 1916..
Application filed August 3, 1914. Serial No. 854,733.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAnLEs J. PASURKA, a citizen of the United States, residingat Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Twine-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to twine holders and has, for its primary object, the provision of an improved device of that character, --which shall have improved meanswhereby the passage of twine from the holder is arrested when the article isnot in use..
With the above and other objects in v ew, this invention consists substantially in the combination, ,arrangement and construction: of parts, all as hereinafter described, shown H in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and illustrate.
the preferred embodiment of the invention,
- and more particularly set forth in the subjoined claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention illustrating the pos1- tion of the parts when the twine is not being withdrawn from the ball; Fig. 2, a
view, similar toFig. 1, with portions broken away and illustrating the position assumed by the parts when twine is being drawn from the holder; Fig. 3, a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1; and F ig. 41, a section taken on line 441 of Fig. 2. e
The frame-work ofthe present invention a is made up of a lower reach 10, centrally. up bent as at 11 to form a support for a ball of twine l2; up-rights 13 and 14 rising from the ends of the lower reach 10; and an upper reach 15 which, centrally of the uprights, is provided with a twine guide 16 and extends outwardly from the up-right 13 where it terminates in a second twine guide 17; A take-up weight 18, having a twine loop 19, is provided, preferably embracing the up-right 13 and guided thereby, and a lower twine guidealO is formed atthe-juncture of lower reach 10 and upright 13.
In the upper reach of the framework and between the guides 16 andthe-upright 13 the upper reach 15 is down bent to form an upwardly opening crotch 20 and an enlargement 21 below the point 22 ofthe crotch. A ring 28 surrounds the crotch 20 and is movable longitudinallythereof, the enlargement 21 is of a greaterwidth than the internal diameter of the ring 23, for which reason it forms a stop for the descentofw the ring. Preferably the two twine guides 16 and 17 he at approximately the same level, and, preferaoly also, the crotch 20 has its point 22 below that level. For a purpose to be described the crotch is inclined as lllustrated, with its lower end nearer upright let than its upper end is.
In the operation of the invention, the twine 1.2 is threaded through the holder in the manner illustrated in the drawings, whereby the free end. is carried first through the guide 16, then through the crotch 20, but below the ring 23, thence through the loo-p 19 of the take-up weight 18 and thence through the guide 17, from which it passes to lower guide 10 and depends therefrom asat 12 W hen twine is being withdrawn from the holder, the parts assume the positions illustrated in Fig. 2, wherein the weight 18 'hasbeen drawn to the upper end of the upright 13 by reason of the taut condition of thetwine between the guides 16 and 17. This same taut condition causes a rise of ring 23 into contact with the upper reach oftheframe. This rise of thering to a position well above the point 22 of the crotch leaves the twine free to pass from I the spool 12 through all parts of-the holder the loose end 12 in the ordinary manner I and wherein, also, the twine has been bound in the point of crotch 20.
One primary object of the present invention is fulfilled when the parts assume the positions illustratedin Fig. l by the drop of the ring 23 until it rests upon the enlargement or stop 21. This function, the
binding ofthe twine within the" crotch 20, is caused by the weight of the ring, which, in falling, carries with it the twine on both sides of crotch 20 and, in passing the point of the crotch, positively draws the twins intothe crotch sufliciently to bind it there. i
This drop of the ring and bindingof the twine 12? in thecrotch 20 takes place simultaneously with the descent of weight 18, by. reason of which it will be seen that during the time the weight-18 is traveling froin the position level with the point of the crotch 20 to the bottom of upright 13 it is causing a backward passageof twine through guide 17 and no passage of twine whatever through of a device performing the functions of ring 23 this objectionable feature is overcome in the present invention, as always, during the descent of take'up weight 18, that weight causes a full retraction of the free end 12* of the twine.
It not infrequently occurs that knots or other tangles are present in the ball of twine used in a twine holder, and it is an advantage of the present invention that, by reason of the inclined position of the crotch 20, as heretofore described, such knots or tangles will normally slip through the crotch 20 without catching therein and causing a break of the twine.
It is conceived that the twine holder may be used without a take-up weight, in which case, when the twine is broken after the tying of a package, the dropping of ring 23 binds the twine in the crotch 20 and pre vents any casual passageof twine off the holder by such a force, for instance, as a wind or the catching of the twine upon the clothing of the operator.
It is a further advantage of the present invention that the entire structure may be made from wire, it being noted'in the drawings that all parts, including the take-up weight 18, are formed of bent wire.
The term upwardly opening applied to crotch 2O refers merely to the spreading of the sides of the crotch as they rise, and is not intended to limit the structure to a crotch open at the top.
In the accompanying drawings and in the foregoing description is set forth the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is obvious that one skilled in the art may make modifications thereof without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1.- The combination of a pair of twine guides, an upwardly opening tension crotch therebetween, and an annular weight surrounding the crotch and movable longitudinally thereof.
2. The combination of a pair of twine guides, an upwardly opening tension crotch positioned therebetween and at a level below that of either of the guides, and an an nular weight surrounding the crotch and a movable longitudinally thereof.
The combination of a pair of twine ing twine engaging portions on opposite sides of said crotch.
4:. The combination of a pair of twine guides, a tension crotch therebetween, a
weight movable longitudinally of the crotch and having twine engaging portions on opposite sides of said crotch, and a stop limiting the movement of the weight in the direction of the point of the crotch.
5. The combination of a pair of twine guides, an upwardly opening tension crotch positioned therebetween, a weight movable longitudinally of said crotch and having twine engaging portions on opposite sides of the crotch, and a stop below the point of the crotch limiting the downward movement of the weight.
6; The combination of a pair of twine guides, an upwardly opening tension crotch positioned between the guides and below either of the guides, a weight movable longitudinally of the crotch and having twine engaging portions on opposite sides of the crotch, and a stop limiting the downward movement of the weight after the weight has passed below the point of the crotch.
7. The combination of a pair of twine guides, an upwardly opening tension crotch therebetween, a tension weight movable longitudinally of the crotch and having twine engaging portions on opposite sides of the crotch, and a take-up weight vertically movable between the crotch and one of the guides. V
8. The combination of a pair of twine guides, an inclined upwardly opening tension crotchbetween and below the guides, an annular tension weight surrounding the crotch and movable longitudinally thereof, and a take-up weight vertically movable between the crotch and one of the guides."
9. As an article ofmanufacture, a twine holder composed entirely of wire and combining a pair of twine guides, an upwardly opening tension crotch formed between and below the guides, an annular tension weight surrounding the crotch and movable longitudinally thereof, an enlargement formed upon the crotch below the point thereof and of greater thickness than the inner diameter of the annulus, and a take-up weight vertically movable between the crotch and one of the guides.
10. In a twine holder, the combination of an upwardly opening tension crotch and a weight movable longitudinally of the crotch and having twine engaging portions on opposite sides outside of said crotch.
11. In a twine holder, the combination of an upwardly opening tension crotch, a weight movable longitudinally of said crotch" and having twine engaging portions on opposite sides of the crotch and a stop below the point of the crotch limiting the downward movement of the weight.
12. In a twine holder, the combination of an inclined upwardly opening tension crotch, a Weight movable longitudinally of the crotch and having twine engaging portions on opposite sides of said crotch, a twine guide, and a take-up weight vertically movable between the crotch and said guide.
13. In a twine holder, the combination of an upwardly opening tension crotch, a
weight movable longitudinally of the crotch and having twlne engaglng portlons on opposite sides of said crotch, a stop limiting 15 the movement of the weight after the twine engaging portions thereof have passed below the point of the crotch, a twine guide, and a take-up weight vertically movable between the crotch and said guide.
