This invention relates to certain improvement-s in burners and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character wherein a liquid fuel is atomized and delivered in the form of spray through the medium of an expansible fiuid and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the flame of the burner is under automatic control.
t is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improv-ed burner of this general character whereinauiiliary or supplemental means are provided for com` minuting or breaking up the fuel whereby a maximum of efiiciency is obtained.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved burner wher-eby certain in'iportant advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accomf panying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation or" a burner constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention g Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line of -Figure 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a casing providing a mixing chamber 2 herein disclosed as substantially spherical in form. in communication with the chamber 2 is a depending nipple .3 forne ing a continuation of an oil supplv line 4. interposed in the line 4 is a valve 5 of a globe type and which is provided with the exteriorly disposed valve stem 6. The caeing 1 is provided with the opposed nipples 7 in communication with the chamber 2 and coupled to the out-er nipple 7 is an elongated tubular member 8. Fixed to the outer prtion of the member 8 is the tip 9 provided with a restricted discharge vent 10. The
outer end portion of the tip 9 isialso provided adjacent to the vent 10 with the supplemental or auxiliary vent 11 in communication with a chamber 12 comprised in the structure of the tip 9. 14 denotes a pipe line in communication with the chamber 12 and leading from a pipe line P in communication with a .steam boiler.` Flow through the pipe 14 is under control of the valve 15 yof any ordinary or preferred construction.
Extending wit-hin the vchamber 2 through the second or inner nipple 7 is a tube 16 which closely approaches the inserted end portion of a second tube 17 directed through the first nipple 7. The outer end portion of the tube 16 is iiared or enlarged to pro vid-e a valve seat 18.
Coupled in a conventional manner to the inner or second nipple 'Y is an L-joint 19 also in communication with the pipe line P. The fiow through the pipe line P and the coupling 19 is under control of the valve 2O of any ordinary or preferred type.
Coacting with the valve seatlS is a needle valve 21 supported for sliding movement by the coupling 19 and which has an vextended end portion engaged with a block or sleeve 22. This sleeve 22 carries an outstanding pin 24 which provides a Vsupport for an upstanding lever V25.
Also connected kto the blocl: or lsleeve 22 is a rod 2G, said rod'2s being aligned with the needle valve 21. This rod is slidably disposed within a cylinder 27 spaced from the coupling` 19 but herein disclose -as `connected thereto by a web28 whereby the cylinder 2? has a fixed position relative to the coupling 19. The outer end portion of the cylinder 27 is enlarged as at 29 and at which enlarged portion 29 is arranged a head 30 carried by the inserted end portion of the rod 26. K
rlhe el'ilarged portion 29 of the cylinder 27 is closed by a cap 31V whereby a chamber 32 is provided. This chamber 32 is intersected by a diaphragm 33 preferably of phosphorbronze and with which the head 30 is in direct contact.
A pipe 34 leads from the pipe P at a while the opposite end portion is in contact with an enlargement 36 slidably mounted upon the rod 26. Coacting with the enlargement or head 36 is a member or nut 37 threaded through the inner end of the cylinder 27 and which provides means whereby the tension of the spring may be regulated or adjusted as the occasions of practice may prefer. The upper end portion of the lever 25 as hereinbefore referred to is pivotally connected `with an end portion of an arm 38, the opposite end portion of which is pivotally engaged with the wall of the enlarged portion 29 of the cylinder 27. The. lower Vportion of the lever 25 is pivotally engaged with a bloclr39 slidably mounted upon the outer end portion of the rod 6. rlhe rod 6 inwardly of the block 39 is provided with an enlargement and interposed between said enlargement 40 and the block 39 is a spring Ll1 herein disclosed as encircling the `rod 6. The spring L11 serves asa cushion and at the same time facilitates the rocking Ymovement of thelever 25 in one direction.
The pipe line P preferably leads from a steam boiler with which the burner is associated and the normal steam pressure delivered through the branch' pipe 34 within the chamber 32 is the same as the tension of the spring 35 so that under such normal conditions the valve 21 and the valvel 5 are open to effect the. desired mixture.` rllhe steam from the boiler also passes from the pipe P and through the sleeves .7 and which action results in oil being drawn up into the chamber 2 through the pipe line 41 and through the vent 10 of the tip 9. As the boiler pressure increases, the diaphragm 33 Vwill impose corresponding movement to the head 32 and rod 26 whereby the valves 21 and will be correspondingly7 closed and to an extent to reduce the flame to` only a pilot. Upon decrease of the boiler pressure, the valves 6 and 15 will move in the opposite direction resulting in a correspondingly enlarged flame. l
lVhen the :valve 15 is open the steam disi charged through the vent 11 will serve to strike the mixture discharged through the vent lO and thereby further break and comminute the fuel, such as oil, and thus assuring maximum efficiency of the' fuel.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a burner constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing 'rom the principles and spirit thereofand for this reason I do not wish tol be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts nerein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed; Y
