My invention relates to bushing terminal connecters. Electrical apparatus such as a transformer or a circuit breaker is often immersed in oil in a casing which is pro- I vided with suitable insulating bushings for the leads which are brought out to terminals at the outer ends of the bushings, the external lines being connected to these terminals. The-bushings are usually assembled from parts which are largely of fragile material such as porcelain and experlence has shown that breakage of a bushmg or other injury thereto is likely to be caused by the pull and vibration of an external line conductor connected to its terminal. This pull on the bushing may be in any one of various turn at'substantlally right angles to the axis directions, either directly in'line with the axis of the bushing or in some lateral direction, depending upon the direction in which the conductor leaves the bushing terminal.
Sometimes a bushing terminal has been connected directly to a rigid and unyieldable external conductor such as a bus 'bar and'in this case the extent and direction of the pull in injury to the bushing if the apparatus settles unevenly and sovas to tip away from the direction of the conductor connected to the bushing.
The general object of the invention is to provide a bushing with a yieldable connecter '4oint erposed betweenv the bushing terminal and an external conductor-to relieve the bushing from excessive pull by the conductor. Like reference characters refer tosimilar parts in thedifierent figures of the draw- Tn its preferred form as shown in the drawing, the connecter comprises a yieldable resilient helical conductor 10 formed of a flat strip of conducting material wound edgewise with spaced turns, and with the greater cross sectional dimension of each of the helix; The lower end of the connecter is connected to the terminal 11 of a bushing 12 extending through a casing 13 such as is commonly used to enclose a large transformer. -An external conductor 14 is connected to the upper or outer end of the connecter 10.. The external conductor 14 is shown in the drawing as extending laterally from the connecter 10 so as to exert a lateral or sidewise pull on the connecter 10 and The flat cross sectional-form of the turns of the connecter 10 strengthens the connecter against the lateral pull of the external conductor 14 but the connecter will yield. in
v any direction to prevent the pull which is transmitted from the external conductor to the bushing from becoming excessive from any cause such as tipping or settling of the casing 13 on its foundat1on. The reactance of the connecter due to its helical form provides. protection for the transformer and bushing against electrical disturbances in the external conductor. 14. The connecter 10 is also preferably sufliciently resilient to absorb vibration and shock from the external conductor 14 and substantially re duce transmission of-such' mechanical disturbances from the external conductor to the bushing. The connecter thus provides both electrical, and .'mechanical protection for the bushing.
The connecter various changes may of course be made withm the scope of the inventlon as defined in the appended V has been described in what] is'now considered its preferred form but What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A bushing for encased electrical apparatus, said bushing having an outer terminal, an external conductor, and a yieldable connecter interposed between said bushing terminal and said external conductor; said yieldable connecter being in the form of an inductive helix.
2. A'bushing for encased, electrical apparatus, said bushing having an outer terminal, an external conductor, and a yieldable connecter in the form of an inductive helix interposed between said bushing terminal and said external conductor, said connecter comprising a fiat conductor with its greater nal, an external conductor, and a yildable resilient connecter interposed between said bushing terminal and said external conductor, sal-d connecter comprlslng a flat resillent helical conductor with its greater cross sectional dimension substantially at right angles to the axis of the hellx.
