My invention relates to improvementsin sewing machines, and is particularly concerned 'with improvements in sewing machines embodying a double needle bar.
Considerable 'diiiiculty has heretofore been experienced with sewing machines of this typel because of the frequent breakage of the one needle bar at the point where one cr more screws pass through it. Another objection to the type of double needle bar ma chine heretofore employed is that it is necessary to stop the sewing machine before a lcorner can be turned in the goodsI which is being operated upon.
The principal objects of my invention are to provide a sewing machine of the double needle bar type which will overcome the defects in the types of machines heretofore used, by providing a machine in which the metal of the two needle bars is so disposed 'as to insure a maximum degree of strength and which do not require the passage of screws or other similar devices to secure them to adjacent parts.
Another obj ect of my invention is to provide a sewing machine of the character described which need not be stopped when it is desired to turn a corner. l
A still further object of my invention is to provide a sewing machine of the character described which is simple in construction, economical to manufact-ure and easy to operate. l

In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings, I have illustrated a sewing machine comprising a hollow head 10, which is so shaped as to receive the mechanism about to be described. The upper and lower sides of this head are provided with the aligned upperand lower bearings 11 and 12, respectively, the lower on-e being of greater diameter than the upper one. A hollow or tubular needle Vbar 13 is slidably mounted in the bearing 12 and a second needle bar 14, preferably formed of solid.

A boss 15 projects outwardly from the upper end of the hollow needle bar 13 and reciprocates in a slot 16 formed in the face plate 17 which is secured to the end of the head, thereby preventing rotation of the needle bar 13. This boss. also projects through the slot 18 formed inthe link 19.
A shaft 20, which is mounted in the arm 21 of the sewing'machine, projects into the head 10y and is provided with a crank arm 22 carryingl the eccentric pin 23. A pitman rod 24 connects the eccentric pin 23 with theV wrist pin 25 on the lower endv of the bar 26, which partially embraces the needle bar 14. A sewing machine comprising a head, first and second cylindrical needle bars guided for reciprocation in said head,a latch member pivotally attached to the outside ot said iirst needle bar adapted to engage said second needle-bar, and means tor moving said latch member into andl out of latching position, said means remaining in operative engagementv with said latching member throughout the lull stroke reciprocation ot said first Vneedle bar.

A sewing machine comprising a pair of needle bars, means for reciprocating one of said bars, a latch pivotally carried on one of the said hars, a pawl spaced Jfrom the normal path of movement of said latch, saidv latch having a lug adapted for engagement with said pawl, and means for shitting said latch to cause the path of movement of said lug to intersect the path ot movement of said pawl.

A sewing machine comprising a head, a shaft guided in said head for reciprocation, said shaft being adapted to carry aneedle, a sleeve surrounding said shaft and adapted tor reciprocation thereon, said sleeve also being adapted to carry a needle, an operating `crank in said head, a link connectingsaid upper end of said sleeve terminating inter'- medate said bearings, an operating crank in said head, means operatively connecting said crank with said shaft, andv releasable Alatching means for `operatively connecting said shaft and said sleeve.

A sewing machine comprising a pair of needle bars, means for reciprocating one of said needle bars, and means for releasably latching sai-d needle bars together comprisihg a slotted link pivotally connected to one of said needle bars, and a lug` projecting from the other of said needle bars and playing in said slot.`

A sewing machine comprising a head, a pairl of `needle bars slidably mounted in said head, an operating crank having permanent operative connection with one of said needle bars for reciprocating the latter during all rotation of said crank, a latching member pivotally yconnected to one of said needle bars'for reciprocation therewith, said latching member being pivoted on a substantially horizontal axis for swinging movement in a vertical plane, a shoulder on said latching memberI adapted to engage a shoulder onk the other needle bar when said latching member has been swung' .to one position, a shoulder on saidlatch-ing member adapted to engage another shoulder, stationary relative to the reciprocations ofthe needle-bars., for holding said tiret-mentioned needle bar in stationary position when said latching member has been swung to another position, and means for vswinging said latching member between said two positions.

A sewing machine comprising a head, a pair of needle bars slidably mounted in said head, means for reciprocating one of said needle bars, a latehing member pivotally connected to one of said needle bars for reneedle bar when said latching member hasl been swung to one position, a shoulder on said latching member adapted to engage another shonlder, stationary relative to the reciprocations of the needle-bars, for holding said lirst mentioned needle bar in stationary position when said latching member has been swung to another position, and actuating means remaining in operative engagement with said latching member throughout the full stroke reoiprocation of its associated needle bar for swinging said latching member between said two positions.

A sewingmachine comprising a head, a hollow needle bar, a second needle bar slidably mounted in said hollow needle bar, a latching member pivotally connected to one of said needle bars for reciprocation therewith, said latching member having swinging movement in a substantially vertical plane, a shoulder on said latching member adapted to engage a shoulder on the other needle bar when said latching member has beenswung to open position, a shoulder on said latching member adapted to engage another shoulder, stationary relative to the reciprocations of the needle bars, for holding its associated needle bars in stationary position when said latching member has been swung to another position, and means for swinging said latchingimember between said two positions.
