Be it known that I, CELESTE DE MARTIN, a subject of the King ofltaly, residing at 599 22d street, Test New York, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Connecting and Disconnecting Mechanism for EmbroideringMachines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to embroidering machines and has for its object to provide means whereby without arresting or disconnecting the embroidering-machine-operating mechanism from its driving mechanism or even without reducing the speed of the ma chine the operation of one set of embroidering implements, such as the stitching needles, borers, or the like, may be changed into that of others, or the embroider-lug implements may be temporarily arrested, as e. g. the stitching needles'may be stopped outside of the design inorder to give the embroidery frame while the machine is in operation any movement without affecting the design. My invention consists in that the move ment of the implements controlling the roller is so supported above the cam, that it may freely move bodily in vertical direction relative to the latter and that to hold it in close contact with the cam during the operation ofthe implements a lock is employed which, by a short motion, can-be positioned to lock orunlock said roller.
l/Vhile I shall in the following describe two different forms of construction for accomplishing my object,'1 wish it'to be understood that various other forms of construction may be designed for accomplishing the same object and function,without'departing from the principle of my invention.
In the accompanying drawing 'WhiCll forms partof this specification and in which similar reference characters denotecorre sponding parts, Figure 1 is a sectional end elevation of a part of an embroidering machine equipped with my novel device,- the machine being shown in a more or less diagrammatic view Fig.2 is a front sectional elevation of a partof the'machine, equipped with my novel device, and Fig. 3 is a similar view asFig. 1, showing a modified construction of the 7 device.
Referring to the draw ng-more indetail, a denotes the main driving shaft of the ma chine which drives the cam b controlling the embroidering implements. With very long machines, in order that the implements operate uniformly at all points of the length of the machine, two cams b I) are used, one at each end of the machine, both cams being driven from the same shaft a.
In the present example we shall, for simplicitys sake, describe the device in connection with the stitching needles, it being obvious that the device without any material changes may be applied in connection with borers, take-ups, etc.
Accordingly, let 0 denote one of the set of stitching needles, adapted to operate through the fabric m-m carried by the usual fabric frame (not shown). The needles are carried by the needle bar d extending throughoutthe length of the machine and whose reciprocatory motion is effected by the cams b I), through the medium of bars e connected to the needle bar (5 by bell cranks Each of the bars 6 carries two rollers i and j of which roller 6 engages the inner surface and j, the outer face of the cam. These rollers, when in close contact withthe opposite faces of the cam will transmit positive motion to the needle bar (Z.
To temporarily interrupt the transmission of motion to the implements without stopping the shaft a or affecting the operation of the machine in any way whatsoever, each roller j'is carried by an arm is which, like a plunger, is supported inthe corresponding bar and is-capable of mov ing therein vertically toward and away from the cam. To this endeach bar 0 is formed at its lower endwith a vertical guide groove 6 in which the plunger arm 70 is so fitted as to be capable of moving freely therein in vertical direction. Each bar 6 has an additional guide groove 6 extendingtransversely to the guide groove 0 and serving to receive a slide Z whose movement is controlled from the jacquard as will be hereinafter described. The slide Z is provided with a cross piece or block m which is adapted in normal position, that is, when the implements are to be in operation, to register with the upper end of the plunger arm 70 and act as a stop or look, holding the plunger arm stationary in a position where the roller j will be in close contact with the cam I).

Y mechanism will not be affected, and little force will be required to move the slide. When'the plunger arms is have been released the cams, will be allowed to continue their rotation without imparting movement to the implements.

vWhat I claim and desire to secure by Letbination with embroidering implements and a driven cam for operating the latter, of a member operatively connected to said implements and having a roller adapted to remain constantly in contact with said cam but capable of moving rectilinearly in a vertical direction in said member, and means for locking said roller against vertical movement relative to said member so as to trans mit motion to the latter.

In an embroidering machine, the combination with embroidering implements and a driven cam for operating said implements, of a member operatively connected to said implements and having a. roller adapted to remain constantly in contact with said cam but capable of moving rectlllnearly 1n a vertical d1rect1on in said member, and automatically controlled means for temporarily locking said roller against vertical movement relative to said member so as to transmit motion to the latter. j

In an embroidering machine, the combination with embroidering implements and a driven cam for operating said implements of a member operatively connected to said implements and having a roller adapted to remain constantly in contact with said cam but capable of moving rectilinearly in a vertical direction in said member, and an automatically controlled slide movable across the path of said roller and capable of locking said roller against vertical movement relative to said member so as to transmit motion to the latter. g f l 4. In an embroidering machine, thecombination with embroidering implements and driven cams, of members operatively connected to said implements and having vertical guides, 'rollers movably supported in said guides and adapted to remain constantly in contact with their respective cams and automatically controlled means for locking each roller against vertical move ment relative to the respective member and automatically controlled common means for operating the said locking means synchronously.
5. Inan embroideringmachine, aldriven cam, an implement operating bar, two rollers carried by said bar to engage the inner and outer surface offisaidr-cam, the outer roller being adapted to remain constantly in contact with said'cam" and to be bodily movable in said bar ina vertical direction, and a member movable across-the vertical path of said outer roller to lock the latter against vertical movement relative to ,said' bar to transmit motion to the latter.

In an embroidering machine, a driven cam, an implement, operating bar, two rollers carried by said bar to engagetheinner and outer surfaces thereof, the outer roller bein adapted to remain constantly in contact wit said cam and to be bodily movable in said bar in a vertical direction and an automatically controlled slide movable across the vertical path of sad outer roller to lock the latter against vertical movement relative to said bar. j
7. In an embroidering machine, the combination with driven cams, of implement operating bars operated from said cams, a plunger arm capable of moving vertically in each bar, a roller carried by each plunger arm, means movable across the path of each plunger arm for locking the latter against vertical movement relative to the corresponding bar, jacquard controlled means for operating the saidlast named means at one end of the machine, and means for transmitting said jacquard controlled operation to the other end of the machine.
8. In an embroidering machine, a cam op-.
erated bar having a vertical guide and a cross guide, a plunger arm movable in said vertical guide, a roller carried by said plunger arm, a slide movable in said cross guide and adapted to act as a stop or lock for said plunger arm and jacquard controlled means operatively connected to said slide.

In an embroidering machine, the combination with embroidering implements and a driven cam, of a member operatively connected to said embroidering implements and having a vertical guide, a roller movably supported in said guide and adapted to remain constantly in contact with said cam and means for locking said roller against gertical displacement relative to said mem- 10. In an embroidering machine, the combination with embroidering implements and a driven cam, of a member operatively connected to said embroidering implements and having a vertical guide, a plunger freely movable in said guide, a roller carried by said plunger and adapted to remain constan tly in contact with said cam and means for locking said plunger to said member.
11. In an embroidering machine, the co1nbination with embroidermg implements and a driven cam, of a member operatively connected to said embroidering implements a roller rectilinearly movable in said member and adapted to be constantly in contact with said cam and means for locking said roller to said member.
12. In an embroidering machine, the combination with embroidering implements and a driven cam, of a member operatively connected to said implements and having a vertical guide, rollers carried by said member to engage the inner and outer surfaces of said earn, the outer roller being rectilinearly movable in said vertical guide and adapted to be constantly in contact with said cam and automatically controlled means for looking said outer roller against vertical displacement.
13. In an embroidering machine, the combination with embroidering implements and a driven cam, of a member operatively connected to said implements, a roller freely and rectilinearly movable in said member and adapted to be constantly in contact with said cam and a locking member movable across the rectilinear path of said roller to operatively connect the latter to said member.
