MOSES FaCARR, OF LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS. ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,
TO THE BASSICK MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORA- TION OF DELAWARE.
LUBRICATING NIPPLE AND CAP THEREFOR.
Application filed February 1, 1928. Serial No. 616,345. v
This invention pertainsto improvements in lubricating nipples and caps therefor. The construction herein illustrated is a modification of that shown in my co-pending applllication Serial No. 616344, filed herewit In the drawings, which show a preferred form of one embodiment of my invention:
Figure 1 is the side elevation of a lubr l eating nipple attached to a partto be lubricated and protected by a cap;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, bemg partly in elevation;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Flg.
2; and
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44: of Fig. 2, being partly in elevation.
Referring to the drawings and to the pre: ferred form of my invention selected for illustrative purposes, I have shown a lubricant-receiving nipple of the character described in my co-pending application above referred to, containing a passage therethrough for the lubricant, a spring in the 95 passage and a check ball 5 closing the opening at the lubricant-receiving end of the nipple. The center portion of the nipple has a steep pitch thread 6 for engagement with a correspondin thread on the interior 0 of the nozzle of a In ricant delivering gun.
' At one side of this steep pitch thread is a finer itch thread 7 adapted to be screwed into t e part to be lubricated 8. At the other side of the steep pitch thread is a cylindrical portion 9 for engagement by a sealing element of the hat washer type. Be-' tween the cylindrical portion 9 and the steep pitch thread 6, I have provided a neck 10 to retain a dust cap which is preferably formed of two pieces of sheet metal, the first a cover portion 11 flanged over and about a skirt portion 12 covering the remainder of the cylindrical portion of the nipple and the central ortlon thereof having a steep pitch thread The connection between the parts 11, 12 is preferably such as to provide a convenient finger hol 13.
In the skirt portion 12 is preferably provided a depression 14 adapted to engage in the neck 10 with resilient pressure to prevent rattling of the nipple. This depression 14 and, if desired, a shoulder 15 are preferably so located as to prevent the top closure 11 of the cap from coming into contact with the ball 5. The skirt portion 12 is preferably of such diameter that when split for a portion of its length at 16, it will closely embrace and press against the exterior of the threaded portion 6, while providing a minimum of opening at 16 through which dust might enter.
While I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that I have done so for pure poses of clarification and notfor purposes of limitation. My invention is best defined in the following claims.
I claim 1. A dust cap presenting a resilient skirt portion for enclosing the coupling means presented by a nipple to exclude dust and dirt therefrom, said skirt resenting at one side a slit to provide resilienc and, at a point adjacent said slit, a struc -in depression for resilient engagement with a neck on the lubricant-receiving nipple.
2. A dust cap presenting a resilient skirt portion generally tubular in sha e to provide means for covering the coup ing means of a lubricant-receiving nipple to exclude dust and dirt therefrom and resenting at one side a slit to provide resiliency and a struck-in depression located substantially midway between the ends of the cap for resilient engagement with a neck on the lubricant-receiving nipple.
3. A dust cap for a lubricant-receiving nipple presenting a cylindrical skirt portion for reslliently embracing and coverin a threaded ortion of a nipple to exclude ust and dirt t erefrom, said skirt portion being slit to provide resiliency and presenting a struck in depression in the skirt portion for resilient engagement with a neck on the lubricant-recelving nipple.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
