Another feature relates to the provislon of means for holding the webs while the cir-- cular knife is moved along the straight knife while cutting said webs. i
Still another feature relates to pcsitively holding the cutting periphery of the circular knife against the sharp edge of the straight knife, for severing the webs, and at the same time providing a self-sharpening cutting device.
When a portion of the work-web has been typed upon, and through successive linespacing, the leading edge of the work-web engages a paper-gage, it is then desired to cut it off, so that a fresh portion of the work-web may be typed on. The circular knife and the bail-piece which normallyclear the work-web are forced downwardly, so that the bail will grip the work-web near the cutting edge of the straight knife. The circular knife is then forced downwardly against the work-web, and, through cam-like mechanism provided for the purpose, is simultaneously forced against the cutting edge of the straight knife. Then the circular knife is slid along a path parallel to the straight knife, and the Work-web being interposed will therefore be severed between the sharp edge of the straight knife and the cutting periphery of the circular knife.
The bail-piece holding the work-web and the circular knife are then released, so that a new portion of the work-web may be fed forward. To this end there is provided a section, of the cutting device shown as an attaclnnent. to an Underwood typ-ewriting inaclnne.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view in eleva-- tion, showing the cutting device in its inefi'ective position mounted on the delivery of the fan-fold type. Figure 3 is a perspective view of the circular ,knifeholder slidably mounted on a rock-shaft.

across the carriage, so that the platen may be swung forwardly inline with the worksheet on the fan-fold table and clear of the feed-rolls. 14 and 15, which .usually co-op era-te with the platen for feeding the worksheet in line-space direction. The platen is shown geared to the line-space mechanism by means of pinions 16 fast on its axle 17, said pmions meshing with idlers 18 fast on the front shaft 13, which idlers, in turn, mesh with pinions 19 fast on the shafts 20 which carry finger-wheels 21 for o eratmg the platen, and are journaled in p atenframes 22.
According to the method of handling the work in this invention, a web 23 is drawn from the rear of the machine over a rear table 24, down around the platen, past the feed-rolls to the printing line, opposite types 25 on type-bars 26, and then up and rear-' wardly over a front table 27, upon which the cutting attachment which forms the' subject of this invention is mounted. In the usual operation of these machines, the Web is line-spaced after each line of typing until off so that a new section of the web may be typed upon, and so on.- To this end, a bail 30, which extends parallel. to :the laten and is pivotally mounted on a cr1ss-s1aft'31', 1s. swung downwardly from a po' ition shown 1n be noted that the housing, as it is shown in the drawings, is formed out of a single piece of flat sheet-metal, and comprises a hood 44 for protecting the fingers of the operative,

The knife 32 is fastened to a bracket 48 by Figure 2 to that shown in Figure 4, so that means of screws 49, and said bracket is, in

Springs 33, at each end of the bail 30 ormally hold the same in its ineffective p sition by engaging with a notch 34 cut at the rear of the side arms of said bail beyohd its rocking swung downwardly, and the springs are tirown out of engagement with thenOtche 34, the point 35 formed on the springs then bearing on the bail at a point beyo d its fulcrum, and therefore holds the bail 30 down against the knife 32, thereby gripping the. web 23 near the cutting edge 36 off the knife 32. The exact position of a circular cutter 37 relatively to the web, previous td its being out after the bail has been thrown in its eflective position, is not shown in he drawings, ill lie on the web 23, and its relative position to a crossbar 38 will be as shown in F gure 2.. The function of said bar 38 is to\force the cutter 37 against the cutting edge 3tiof the knife 32, and to this end it is fastened to'the bail 30, ofWvhich it forms an integral part. The circular cutter 37 is revolubly mounted on a screw 39 fast to a housing 40, which is in turn rockably and slidably mounted on the cross-shaft 31 upon which the bail 30 is swung, so that, by gripping the housing 40, and by forcing the same downwardly at the same time, it may be slid along the shaft 31, as the web is severed between the cutting edge of the knife 32 and the cutting edge 41 of the cutter 37.
In order that the circular cutter may be positively held against the cutting edge of the knife while the web is being severed, there is provided mechanism which comprises a conical backing 42 operatively engaging with the cross-shaft 31, and a spring 43 housed in the hub of the cutter 37. The head of the screw 39 takes the thrust of the spring 43, which forces the cutter away from the head of the screw, and holds it against the housing 40, so that, when the housing is rocked on the cross-shaft 31, and the circular knife is forced forwardly by the conical backin 42 and the bar 38, the cut- %the cutter 37 is held against the cutting edge 36 of the knife 32. It will turn, fastened to the table 27 by meansof the rivets 50. A downwardly and-forwardly ex tending bend 51, which forms-an integral part of the table 27, is provided under the knife 32 for stiffening the same. Said bracket .48 is provided with upwardly-extending cars 52 for supporting the shaft 31, upon which the circular knifevan'd the bail are mounted.
In order that the bail 30 may be thrown to its ineffective position, so that a fresh portion of the web may be fed forward and typed upon, there is provided 'a handle 53 which forms an integral part of the bail 30. Said handle is forced rearwardly, and the bail is swung to a position, as shown in Figure 2, in which position it is held by means of the springs 33 which engage the notches 34 in said bail. It will be noted that the Underwood machine is provided with a webguiding plate 54.which holds the leading edge of the web after being out off, and guides it under the bail and the knife as itis fed forward. .Variations may be resorted to within the scope of theinvention, and portions of the nnprovements may be used without others. Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine having a platen, a sheet-cutting device including a straight knife-blade, a displaceably-mounted revoluble knife normally disposed above said straight blade, so that a work-sheet may be passed therebetween, a handle for moving said revoluble knife first downwardly and then along said straight knife-blade in shearing engagement therewith for severing a work-web on the platen, and means actuated upon downward action of said handle for urging said revoluble knife squarely against saidstraight blade, and mechanically maintaining such engagement of the revoluble knife as it moves along the straight blade, whereby said revoluble knife and said blade will be kept in close shearing engagement with each other regardless of the wear on them occasioned by their use. 2. In a paper-cutter, the combination of a table, a knife having a straight cutting edge, a revolubly mounted circular knife having a cutting periphery co-operating with said straight edge, a guideway controlling manual means for positively fiorcing the circular knife against the straight cutting edge during the operation thereof, and means for holding a work-sheet along the straight cutting edge, said last-mentioned means \including a bail-piece pivotally mounted at the ends thereof, and resilient means for holding said -bail-piece in either effective or ineffective position. 5
3. In a work-sheet severin typewriting machines, the corn ination of a table having a straight cutting edge, a revolubly mountedcircular knife, a bar parallel to said straight cutting edge for guiding the rectilinear travel of said circular knife, and
manual means co-operating with said bar for positively forcing the circular knife against the straight cutting edge, said means including a tapered hub fast to the circular knife and means for operatively connecting said hub with the bar-in a manner to move the circular knife toward the cutting edge when the latter is operated.
4. In a paper-cutter, the combination of a table having a straight cutting edge, a revoluble circular knife operatively mounted adjacent saidtable and overlying the same, a
' bar parallel to said straight cutting edge for guiding the rectilinear travel of said circularknife, means whereby the circular knife may be forced against the straight cutting edge and slid'along *a line parallel thereto,
said means including a fingeriece upon which the circular knife is revolu 1y mount ed, bearings forming an integral part of said finger-piece slidably mounted on said bar, and a pressure bar across said table cooperating with a conical hub which forms an integral part of said circular knife.
5. In a paper-cutter, the combination of a table, a straight knife forming a part of said table, a revolubly-mounted circular knife disposed above said table for passing a work-sheet under said circular knife, means whereby the circular knife may be moved downwardly and be slid along said straight knife in shearing engagement therewith, and spring-pressed means for clamping a sheet to be severed along a line parallel to said straight knife against said table.
6. In a paper-cutter, the combination of a table, astraight knife forming an integral part of said table, a revolubly mounted circular knife adjacent said table and means whereby the circular knife may be slid in a line parallel to said vstraight knife, and

7 In a paper-cutter, the combination of a table, a straight knife forming an integral part (if said table, a revolubl mounted circular knife adjacent said ta 1e and means whereby the circular knife may he slid in a line parallel to said straight knife, means for c amping a sheet to be severed along a line parallel to said straight knife against said table, said last-mentioned means including a bail-piece rockably mounted on a shaft parallel to and overlying said table and a spring operatively connected to actuate said bail-piece for effectively rendering the same effective or ineffective, and means whereby the circular-knife may be forced against the straight knife while cutting through the sheet on the table. 4 8. A sheet-cutting device comprising a table, a straight knife having a sharp edge fast upon said table, a shaft parallel to the table and overlying the same, a. bail-piece rockably mounted upon said shaft for effectively holding a sheet of comparatively soft material in its cutting position, so that the line through which it is desired to sever the same will lie adjacent the sharp edge of said straight knife, a spring operatively connected to said bail-piece for rendering the same effective or ineffective, a housing rockably and slidably mounted on said shaft for carrying the circular knife revolubly mount ed thereon, and means for effectively holding the circular knife against the sharp edge of the straight knife.
9. A sheet-cutting device comprising a table, a straight knife having a sharp edge fast upon said table, a shaft parallel to the table and overlying the same, a bail-piece rockably mounted upon said shaft for etfectively holding a sheet of comparatively soft material in its cutting position, so that the line through which it is desired to sever the same will lie adjacent the sharp edge of said straight knife, a spring operatively connected to said bail-piecefor rendering the same effective or ineffective, a housing rockably and slidably mounted on said shaft for carrying the circular knife revolubly mounted thereon, and means for efiectively holding the circular knife against the sharp edge of the straight knife, said means comprising a second shaft fast to the ends of the bailpiece co-operatin with a tapered portion of the hub which orms an integral part of the circular knife and a spring in the hub wound around a pivot which supports the circular knife for efiectively forcing the circular knife away from the cutting edge.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination witha revoluble platen, of a table at the delivery side of said platen, a straight knife parallel to said platen and overlying straight knife as the housing carrying the circular knife is slid along said cross-bar, said last-mentioned means including a tapered hub forming an integral part of said circular knife, :1 second cross-bar co-operating with the tapered hub of the circular knife and a spring for effectively forcing the circular knife away from the straight knife.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of a table at the delivery side of said platen, a straight knife forming an integral part of said table, a circular knife disposed to be moved in shearing relation with the straight knife for severing work-sheets, and means for gripping the work-sheets along a line parallel to said straight knife, said means including a. bail-piece pivotally mounted at the ends thereof, and resilient means for holding the bail-piece in either efiective or' ineffective position.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of a table at the delivery side of said platen, a straight the straight knife for cutting off worksheets, and means for gri sheets along a line para la to said straight knife, said means comprising a bail-piece rockably mounted on a cross-shaft which forms an integral sheet of comparatively soft material in its cutting position, so that the line through which it is desired to sever the same will lie adjacent the sharp edge of said straight knife, a spring operatively connected to said bail-piece for rendering the same effective orineffective, a housing rockably and slidably mounted on said shaft for carrying the circular knife revolubly mounted thereon, and means for effectively holding the circular ping the work-' i art of said table and a spring for effective y holdin said bail-piece;
