UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' HELGE A. BoRnESEN, or oIIIoAGo, ILLINOIS, AssIGNoR or @NE-HALF To EDWARD n." IIILLs, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WATCH Isa-BREL'.
winding arbor in a detachable manner, and.
so constructing the winding arbor and main spring co-operating therewith as to automatically guide the main spring into posi- 15 tion about said arbor. More particularly, it
is an object of theinvention `to provide improved. means for attaching the i inner extremity of main springs to winding arbors in a secure manner, andgat the same time 20 enable the main Spring tobe automatically forced home.
Other objects and advantages ofthe invention will occurin the description ofthe invention and the accompanying drawings u showing various forms that my invention may take and in` which Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional view of a lwinding barrel structure of a watch, showing the winding ratchet in the lower move- 30 4ment plate and a main spring with the irnproved means for attaching the same to the winding arbor; I Y.
Fig. `2 is a sectional view `thereof illus- 35 trating the attaching means forthe spring; inner extremity of the main spring coil;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectionalview of a winding arbor and associated parts, show-4 y The windingarbor hub 16V is `beveled as ing a modified anchorage for the spring;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan view of the end of the spring used with the, winding arbor shown infFig. 4; f Fig. 6 is aside view thereof; v Fig. 7 is a fragmentary plan view ofthe 45 end of a main spring with a further modified form of attaching means; i
Fig. 8 is a sectional view of the form of sprin shown in Fig. f7 associated with a Amodi ed formof winding arbor;
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the Serial No. 108,290. Divided and this application filed April29,4
1920; VSerial 110.877,598. l I
Fig. 91's a fragmentary sectional view of.y 50 a winding barrel structure showinglthel winding arbor and' a main` spring witha further modified form of attaching means associated therewith; y Y
i Fig. 10is a fragmentary perspective view 55 ofthe inner end portion of said spring,.and
Fig. 11 is a plan view illustrating the engagement of this form of main spring with the winding arbor, yShown in Fig. 9.
Referring particularly to Figs. lto 3 inclusiv-e, I show a formY of the'invention-as applied to a watch model in which the winding ratchet 12'isfmounted in the lower movement plate-13. f The lowerA movement plate 13 carries'the .bridge'plate 14n-*which h as 65 an annular sleeve 15. The winding 'ratchet 12 with its extending hub 16 is mounted on this sleeve 15 and is'rotatable thereon.` The ,winding ratchet is confined inthe space between the movement plate 13 and the bridge 70 14. -The main arbor` 17 carries the spring barrel 18 and mounted in suitable bearings fixedly carried as illustrated. f Themain arbor is tapered as shown andA is provided with a circumferentially 4groovedportion l19 75 which thus transforms this arbor intov a structure having maximum bearing supports as far apart as possible and permitting an accurate aligning drive fit, Fig. 1 to 3 demonstrate the practicability of mounting the'8o winding mechanism in the` lower plate, yet removing the barrel and main wheel upwardly through the upper movement plate 20 by simply removing the bridge 21. Inorder to automatically guide home the main'- arbor 17 85 into its bearings the sloping shouldered recess 22 is provided.
shownr at 23 so that the spring may be automatically lforced home. In 'order further 9 to procure an automatic meeting of the parts I have beveled the inner extremity 24 ofthe main Vspring 25 as shown'more clearly in Fig. 3. Hooks provided on thefinnercoil Vof the main spring to; be used' in combination `with lthe -old type` barrel with stationary arbor need not possess the automatic assembling `principles as herein provided :as
- said spring in position around seid barrel,
said main spring having in integral hook engagement ofV said beveled portions, said on the inner end thereof provided with a hook riding down said inclined surface into beveled edge adapted to engage with the engagement with a hook receiving forma- 10 beveled end portion of said arbor to guide tion in said recess.
In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe means on said barrel for holding the inner my name this 23rd day of Apri1,A.D., 1920. coil of said spring dstended for automatic HELGE A. BORRESEN.
