Y This invention relates to a lcombination iml plement. V,lt-has for its object the provision4 of an improvedv article of manufacture adapted ,to be .used for a variety of common More particularly'the improved implement of my inventioncomprises a variety of novel and useful interchangeable combinations of a handle, vcuticle pusher, screwdriver', an
abrasive or filing surfacameasuring devices,
cutting i edges, straight edge ruler, etc.
Inlarpr'eferred practice` of my invention, I
- makeuse ofja flat piece of flexible but relativelyk thin .steel of kappropriate ylength of such designand structureasto embody the combination of featuresv adapted to be used for such purposesl as are above indicated.
While I prefer to use steel, there is no reason why some other suitable metal or material, either alone or in combination, could not be used. For example, the desired cutting or I hard edges could be provided by the use of metal insets and the like. Moreover, the implement may be rigid instead of iieXible.
My invention will bebetter understood by reference to the accompanying drawings,
taken in conjunction'with the following de-r scription, in which:
` Fig. 1 is a plan view; Y Fig. 2 is an elevational view showing an abrasive edge;
.i Fig. 3 is a bottom view ofiFig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional view on the linel 4-4 of Fig. l; showing one form of single-taper straight edge;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1 showing onev form of double-taper straight edge;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged transverse sectional view on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1 showing rounded kedges on the handle portion;
Fig. 7 is a plan view of a modie'd handle portion; and
Fig. 8 is a plan view of another modiiied handle portion.
The implement 10, preferablyV of iiexible steel, although it may be rigid, ofv appropriate length, Asay 5 to 8 more or less, is ,Y provided with a handle portion 11 of ap- 'y 50 proximately 1/2 to 2% in width with rounded side `Nedges 12. The implement tapers throughoutits` full length from the `handle portion 11 to the point 13.
The top and bottom of the implement are sive surface 14, is provided with an abrasive provided ywith an abrasive or iiling surface 14. I-fjVV desired such abrasive surface may be placed on only one side; this is optional.
The-edge 15 running the full length of the implement is straight so that it may be used as a straight edge ruler. Measuring marks 16, as inches and the fractional divisions thereof, may be suitably marked adjacent to the straight edge portion on either or both c5 parallel to the abrasive or filing surface. However, there is no reason why the measuring marks may not be conveniently placed on' the handle portion as well.
The straight edge 15 may have its edges beveled or unbeveledas desired. If the steel body is extremely thin, this edge would be sufficiently sharp to provide a cutting edge, such as required for letter-opening. However, I prefer to have this edge beveled either as a single-taper 17 as shown in Fig. 4, or as a double-taper 18 as shown in Fig. 5. i The portion of the straight edge 15, lying between the eXtreme end or point 13, leading back to the measuring marks 16 for a distance of about 1, is sharpened down to a semi-keen edge 19. The opposite edge 2O of this same portion is appropriately rounded as shown, so as to run from the point 13 to to the beginning of the abrasive portion 14 85 for about a distance of 1".v This edge is likewise sharpened, preferably to a keen edge.
y The edge 21, running adjacent to the abra- 91) or filing surface. This narrow abrasive surface is preferably concaved as shown, so that it may fit over and about the top edge of the finger nails.
The eXtreme end of the handle portion 11 is preferably rounded and its edge 22 is beveled so as to provide a suitable edge for cuticle pushing purposes. It is desired that this edge not be beveled too sharply so that the edge may be semi-dull to prevent cutting into the skin of the finger. This beveled edge may alsokbe used as a screwdriver in an emergency.
A hole 23 of appropriate design may be placed in the handle portion for the purpose of hanging up the implement. Such a hole may be of such design as to add to the pleasing appearance of the implement. In
Y the second has an extreme end port-ion cut in clover-leaf 'fashion 25. ln either instance the end edges are preferably beveled so as to provide 'for a suitable cuticle pusher or screwdriver'.
The following are Vsome ol the uses to which my combination implement is particularly applicable: l p
The straight edge r15 'may be used 'for a letter-opener or for tearing pap-er and ten tiles generally. .For example, the implement could be placed down upon a sheet el papei or cloth and held in that position with one hand. as VVthe other hand is used to pull the paperI` or cloth along the cutting edge, When the material Will/part' evenly. y
The point 18 is particularly adapted for opening knots or strings, and iviapping'sy "may be opened by inserting this point and pullingoutward. This point may also be used as a linger nail cleaner. v y
The edge 20, if brought to a keen point7 may be appropriately used as an ink eraser, or indeed 'lior any kindV oit cuttinfT generally doneby sharp edges. However, l prefer not to bring this edge to such a point ofv keen#v kind of line filing Within their capacity. T he beveled edge 22 on the handle portiony is x adapted to be used as a cuticle pusherl or screwdriver, as pointed out above.
The measuring marks 16, in graduations el inches and fractions thereof, may be used af: a substitute for 'a foot ruler.
It will thus be seen that I have successi'fully combined numerous novel il'eatures in one implement which is adaptable l'or many varied and common everyday uses.
AsA an article of manufacture a co1nbination implement comprising, a fiat flexible body with va comparatively ybroad handle portion and narrowing down longitudinally to a point-formed by the termination of a :ptraight and a tapered thin edge, abrasive areas onisaid body for nail-filingpurposes,
and cutting edges for a relatively shortvdis-u tance from said point.
