UNITED STATES 1,643,283 PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER G. BISBEE AND BEN I. HOFFMAN, 0F BRISTOW, OKLAHOMA.
TUBING ELEVATOR FOR OIL WELLS.
Application filed March 11, 1926. Serial No. 94,093.
The invention relates to a device for use in connection with oil wells, by means of which tubing, casing and the like may be withdrawn from the well, the device including a tubular elevator with automatic jaw actuating means which, when assembled, provides a collar which engages completely below a flange whereby the weight is sup-- ported at all the structure.
More specifically, the invention includes a body portion substantially semi-circular in construction and two pivoted jaw members, each in substance extending substantially 90 of an annulus of which the body forms a part. By this arrangement the jaws, when swung in closed position, create a cylindrical supporting element.
Reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts through out the several views, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the jaws in open position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the jaws in closed position;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view with the bale or supporting element cut away and the jaws in open position, and
Fig. 4. is a view similar to Fig. 3 with the jaws in closed position.
The elevator structure as shown includes a body member 8 and two pivoted jaws 1 and 2 which, when in closed position, form a cylindrical support capable of encircling a casing and designed to be positioned below a flange on the casing whereby the latter may be elevated. The body member 3, which includes substantially one-half of the cylindrical assembly, is notched or cut away at its upper and lower edges 4 and 5 adjacent the longitudinal faces 6. These cut-out portions are adapted to form seats for the curved extensions 7 and 8 of the jaws 1 and 2. The pins 9 extend through the extensions 7 and 8 and through the portions of the body 3 between the cut-out portions 4 and 5, whereby a hinged assembly is provided at these two points. A bale 10 is connected at this extremity to the pins 9 and provides means for connection to suitable hoisting machinery. A pivoted lock 11 is attached to the jaw 1 and is adapted to be swung points of the circumference of into closed position beyond the fastener 12.
A releasing lever 14 is provided for moving the jaws 1 and 2, the other half. The jaws 1 and 2 are provided with extensions 7 and 8 j which, due to their curved structure and the position of the pivot pins 9, adjacent the outer longitudinal edges of the body member, swing inwardly within the body of the cylinder when inv the open position. This unique positioning of the extensions 7 and 8 within the body of the cylinder when the jaws are in their open position, operates to provide automatic actuating means for the jaws in that as the jaw extensions engage a tubing section ;or other body, the jaws will be swung inwardly on their pivot and will embrace the tubing. When the jaws are in i closed position and secured by the lock 11 and 12 or by other suitable locking mecha-.
nism, a substantially solid tube is provided, capable of withstanding unusual stress and strain and properly constructed to openly distribute any weight. Particular attention is called to the fact that the closed elevator is without projections or irregular surfaces of any kind, all jointsbeing flush,
What we claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a tubing elevator including a body portion formed with upper and-lowercut-out portions, a pair of pivoted jaw members having curved extensions adaptedto seat on said cut-out portions, and a bale carrier having pivot pins extending through said extensions and through said body.
2. The substance of claim1 characterizedin that the body member and the jaws are.
