Description

Patented Sept. 20, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT oTFicE.
FUEL TANK.
Application filed August 9, 1926.
This invention relates to new and useful in'lprovements in filling nozzles for tanks and more particularly to a device of this character which is used on the gasoline supply a tanks of'motor vehicles or the like and the main object of the invention is the provision of a new and improved filling nozzle to prevent removal of the contents of the tank by syphoning or in a similar manner.
Another object of my invention is a provision of a filling nozzle for gasoline storage tanks whereby the tank may be readily filled through the nozzle but it will be impossible to siphon out the contents of the tank through the said nozzle thus preventing pilfering of the contents of the tank.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction, the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gasoline storage tank illustrating the application of my invention, parts thereof being broken away and illustrated in cross section.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the modified form of my invention, and
. Figure 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
le'ferring now, more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 1llustrates the storage tank which may be used for the storage of gasoline on motor vehicles or any other purpose desired. The tank 1 is rovided adjacent one end thereof with a fil ing opening around which is an upstanding mteriorly to threaded flange 2 and threaded into this flange is a portion of my improved nozzle.
The nozzle includes a substantially straight portion 3 which is exteriorly threaded part of its length to cooperate with the threads upon the 1nterior of the flange 2. The lower end of the nozzle projects into the tank below the upper side thereof as illustrated in Figure l and is provided with a perforated plu 4 which will permit gasoline or other to liquid to enter the tank 1.
The nozzle includes a goose-neck 5, one end of which connects withthe straight portion 3 while the other end thereof is extended lat erally as at 6 and thence upwardly as at 7 Serial No. 128,207.
and the extreme outer end of the nozzle is threaded to receive thereon the closure cap 8 From this it will be apparent that gasohne inay be ejected into the tank 1 by removing the cap 8 and placing the nozzle of a hose pipe within the upwardly extending portion 7 and the force of discharge of the liquid from the nozzle will cause the fluid to travel upwardly through the goose-neck portion 5 and through the nozzle, into the tank. As shown in Fi ure 1 the straight portion is secured in position by means of a lock nut 9 threaded onto the straight portion and hearing against the flange 2.
It will be apparent that this form of noz zle or filling pipe may be placed in different makes of gasoline storage tanks which are in use upon different types of motor vehicles, at the present time. However I have illustrated in Figure 2 a slightly modified form of my invention or filling pipe of nozzle which is of angular shape as shown at 10, one end of which projects into the flange 3 surrounding the filling opening, while the other end projects into the tank with its in ner end provided with a perforated plug 11 to permit the fiuid to enter the tank. In this form of the invention the flange 2 is provided with the usual cap 8' for closing the outer end of the filling ipe 10.
It will be noted that the evice acts as an anti-splash device and by positioning the nozzle upon the interior of the tank as shown in Figure 2 it is entirely out of the way and no damage will be incurred of having the same disconnected from the neck 2'.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that I have provided a simple and inexpensive device of the character described which can be manufactured and placed u n the market at a very low cost and which will prevent syphoning of the contents of the gasoline in a storage or similar tank and can be attached to storage tanks of different types.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it will be understood that various changes and alterations may be carried out for putting my invention into practice without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what I claim is Q meteor In an anti-theft device for gasoline tn disposeoi adjacent the top of" mid tent: and the combination with a tank having at flangei being adapted to prevent e hose m bein inlet opening, of a goose neck having n ormngedi in thebottom of said tank to s 1- v straight portion arranged in said. opening, n phon the contentsthereofle o cap for said 5 curved portion formed with said straight goose neck.
