Description

UNITED STATES ARZA T. LYON, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAINT COMPOUNDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,314, dated June 8, 1875; application filed April 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARZA '1. LYON, of Oincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Paint, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to a composition for painting purposes of remarkable durability, and of especial value for coating roofs, outer walls, fences, and other structures subject to the scorching and disintegrating action of the sun and rain, or to the influence of fire, acid, or other destructive agents.
My paint is composed as follows: I take, in a finely-powdered condition, of caustic (unslaked) lime, two hundred pounds; alum,
- (lump,) twenty pounds; sulphate of zinc, ten
pounds; and coal-ashes, fifty pounds.
The powder composed of the above-mingled ingredients is then slaked in boiled linseed-oil until reduced to an impalpable powder, which I call my lime-powder.
To the above lime-powder is added one-half its weight of whiting and five times its weight of finely-powdered asbestus. To every seven pounds of this is added one gallon of boiled linseed-oil, the whole being thoroughly blended.
My paint is then ready for use, either alone or mingled with white lead or other pigment, according to the shade and color desired; or my paint may, either alone or mingled with any desired pigment, be put up in cans, kegs, or other customary packages for the market.
My practice is to mingle the ingredients of my lime-powder by the act of pulverizing the same; but they may, if desired, be separately pulverized before mingling.
When desired to be employed as a cement or mastic, with a trowel, I use about one-third the quantity of oil in the last application above stated.
I claim The paint compound consisting of caustic lime, alum, sulphate of zinc, coal-ashes, whiting, asbestus, and boiled linseed-oil, in the proportions named, substantially as described.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
ARZA T. LYON.
