`INIPROVENIENT IN UMBRELLA-STANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,302, dated June 8, 1875; application led March 26, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known tha't I, WILLIAn H. HovEY, of Springfield, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Umbrella-Racks; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a reverse plan view of the upper part of the rack removed from its support. Fig. 2 isa vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the key-hub of the lock. Fig. 4 lis a side view of the same, and Fig. 5 is a side view of the bolt.
My invention relates to that class of umbrella-racks in which umbrellas can be placed and locked in for sate-keeping; and it consists of a rack or series of holders having one xed and one pivoted clasp, both being held closed by a bolt engaging aga-inst a shoulder on the pivoted clasp. The bolt is held in contact with the pivoted clasp by a spring, and may be thrown back by a keyhub engaging with the bolt, operated by a key introduced through a key-hole into the tumbler.
In the drawings, C represents the support, made of any ornamental form, and having upon the top a threaded part, c, with a shoulder, b, below, upon which threaded part c is turned the rack D, having any desirable number of holders thereon, this rack being a plate recessed at t, into which are placed the bolts f, which are simply a block having a shoulder, e', at one end, and a recess, s, in the upper side. Above each bolt f is a circular recess, into which is placed a key-hub, m, having upon its lower side a projection, s, which, when the parts are in place, is in the recess s of the bolt. The upper side of this key-hub is partially cut away, as shown at m', leaving a shoulder at z', and
a central pin, o, projects upward nearly or quite through the key-hole o', upon which the key is placed when inserted in the key-hole.
The plate D has any desirable number of projections Athereon, which, when a number of them are used together, may be arranged in a line, side by side, or in a circle.` as desired, and the end of each projection is recessed or hooked at E 5 and extending down from this projection is a pivot, a, upon which is pivoted the clasp or hinge A', provided with a shoulder, e,- and this clasp may be of semicircular form at the outer end, so that, when closed, a space will be inclosed.
A spring, h, is placed behind the bolt f, which operates to force the latter toward the pivoted clasp A', and keep the shoulder e in contact with the shoulder e of the clasp.
One or more pins, g, project down from the lower side of the plate D, and a disk or late, B, has corresponding holes in the upper side, into which the pins g project when the disk or plate B is placed against the lower side of the plate D; and when the plate D is attached to the standard the disk or plate B is placed against the plate D, and both are then placed upon the standard and turned down tightly, and the bolts fare then held in place in their recesses by the disk or plate B.
rlhe standard C may be of any desired form, and may be ornamented to any extent, and may have a drip-pan at the lower part.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The key-holes o in the top of the plate should all bc of different forms for different keys, and the proper key being inserted into its key-holeand turned the key-hub m is rotated, and the bolt j' thrown back, so that its shoulder e will be moved back from its position in front of the shoulder on the pivoted clasp, when the clasp may be swung upon its pivot and opened, as shown in dotted lines .in Fig. l. An umbrella-handle may then be inserted in the clasp, which is then closed, and the umbrella is secured in the clasp, so that it cannot be removed without the proper key to unlock the clasp.
It is evident that the key-hub may be made of different form from that shown in the drawings without departing from the invention, and that the spring h, which, in this case, is of rubber, may be of any other form or material, so that it operates to keep the bolt f forced against the clasp A.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is The combination ot the following elements: and arranged either singly or in a series, sub- The support C, the plate D, having the fixed stantially as described. projection A thereon, the pivoted swinging Clasp A', the boit f, the key-hub m, a, Spring WILLIAM H.
