Description

.I. F. W. DORMAN.
Hand-Stamp. N0 164,273 Paten1ed1une8,1 875.
FIG--1 WITNESSES INVENTOR HE GRAPHIC C0.PHOTOLlTH 39&4] PARK PLAGEJuY.
UNITED STATES T F E- i- JOHN F. W. DORMAN, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-STAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,273, dated J one 8, 1875 application filed May 5,1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. W. DORMAN,
of the city of Baltimore, in the State of Mary-.
land, have invented certain Improvements in Rubber Hand-Stamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to means for changing the dates, which are moved as wanted to the printing-face of the stamp, to a hinged portion of the said printing-face, and to means for adjusting the dating figures and letters to the plane of the rest of the printing-face, all as more particularly hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of the stamp, certain of the dating letters and figures being shown. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the stamp, the upper portions being in section. Fig. 3 is a view of the printing-face.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the views.
A is a handle into which is screwed or otherwise secured the type-case B. Centrally of the type-case, and extending between the two sides thereof, is the block 0, which can be verticall y adjusted, slots a in the sides of the typecase B, through which the screws 1) pass, admitting of the adjustment. To one of the sides of the type-case is hinged the plate D, upon which is a rubber covering, (1, the letters, figures, 870., upon which form the portion of the printing-face intended to remain unchanged. The center of the plate D is cut out at d a length equal to the distance between the sides of the type-case. E E, &c., are endless rubber bands, each having molded on its edge the figures, letters, 820., which, by a proper combination or reciprocal adjustment, can be made to indicate the year, month, and day of the month. It being desired to stamp, in addition to the lettering, &c., contained on the rubber covering of the plate D, any required date, the hook e of the hinged plate D is first detached from the catch f by pressing the sides of the type-case slightly together by hand, and moved up, as shown in Fig. 1. The bands E are then moved around the block 0 in order to bring the required letters and figures to the printing-face. The plate D bearing the fixed part of the type-case is then clasped down, the opening d fitting over the raised letters and figures holding them in place. The stamp is then ready for use. Should it be found that the faces of the movable letters, figures, 850., should at any time be below the plane of the fixed portion of the printing-face, the movable parts can be adjusted to the said plane, as hereinbefore seen. This necessity sometimes occurs when the rubber face at has been removed and another substituted. varying somewhat therefrom in thickness. By hingin g the plate D a smaller central opening can be used than if the letters and figures were capable of being moved without raising the said plate, and a larger amount of lettering is thereby procured thereon.
I claim as my invention and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The rubber type-bands E, block 0, and type-case 13, combined substantially as specified.
2. The hinged rubber-faced type-plate D, having the opening 01, combined with the typecase B, substantially as shown.
3. The slotted typecase B, combined with the block 0 and screw 1), substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of the type-case B, inserted in the handle A, vertically-adjustable block 0, rubber type-bands E, and self claspin g hinged plate D, having the rubber type face d, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereto subscribed my name this 1st day of May, 1875. JNO. F. WV. DOltMAN. Witnesses:
JAs. L. CAMP, GHAs. GABEL.
