'This invention relates to, combs such as vare worn by ladies to hold the hair in place,

and more particularly to such combs especially designed for wear with bobbed hair,

having means for gripping the hair or clamping the hair to itself to prevent the comb from becoming dislodged or lost from the hair. .l

One object of the invention is to provide a `comb of the character described which can be manually and positively operated to firmly and securely Grip the hair and will retain its grip upon -t e hair until manually released.

Another Objectis to provide such a comb having alclasp normally in condition to permity the combr to befreely slipped into and out of the hair and manually and positively operable togrip or clamp itself to the hai-r whereit vis automatically held until manu-v ally released. I,

Other objects are to arovidea comb of this character formed of one piece of resilient material folded upon itself to form a body portion and a cias) portion between which the hair may be firmly clamped by manual pressure of the clasp toward the body, manually releasable vcatches being provided forautomatically holding the clasp in clamping position; to provide such a comb having cooperating novel kgripping surfaces onthe clasp portion and `the body portion; to provide a comb which is simple and inexpensive, and to obtain other results and .advantages as `may be 4brought out by the following description. Specifically describing the illustrated einbodiment of the invention, the comb is formed of a single piece A of resilient sheet material, such as Celluloid, metal or the like, which is formed at one longitudinal side edge with a plurality of teeth l.V Preferably there are two series B and C of teeth which converge inwardly toward each other.

At an intermediate point-in its width the sheet A isformed with a'plurality of alined slots spaced longitudinall j and the end edges of that.- sheet to provide relatively narrow hin e straps 3, and the' sheet is returned or folded uponv itself at said straps to form a body portion D and a clasp portion E which partially overlies the teeth l. The claspl portion E is normally held by the inherent resiliency .of the hinge from each other straps 3 inl spaced relation and at an angle toward the body portion. The `catch 4 may u be released by manually pressing or springing it out Vof engagement With the clasp portion.

The Comb is preferably longitudinally curved to more or less conform to the head of the wearer, and accordingly the end edges of the body `portion may be provided with inturned spring tongue catches 6 to receive theend edges of the clasp portici beneath them to further clamp the clasp` portion against the body portion. The edges of the clasp portion automatically snap beneath the tongues 6 as the clasp portion is pressed toward the body portion, and the clasp portion is released from the tongues by longitudinally springing or flexing the comb.

To. apply the comb to the hair, the clasp portion is permit-ted to assume the spaced relation to the body portion as shown in Figure 5 and the comb is inserted into the hair as is the ordinary comb. The clasp portion E is then pressed by the hand of the wearer' toward the body portion until the catches et and 6 enga fre the clasp portion. The hair is thus securely gripped between the clasp portion and the body portion and the comb is held against dislodgment. The inclination of the teeth l tends to concentrate and closely arrange the hairs beneath the clasp portion so that they are more securely gripped thanpwould be the case it the teeth were parallel and also tends to restrain the tendency of the comb to lall or slide downwardly.

To release the comb from the hair, the comb is longitudinally flexed by simultaneously pressing longitudinally upon both ends thereof which releases the catches 6, and the tongue d is pressed out of engagement with the clasp portion, whereupon the resiliency of the sheet causes the clasp portion to spring away from the body portion.

To provide a more secure clamping of the comb to the hair, the two series of teeth may be formed with diagonal converging depressions or grooves '7 and the clasp portion may be formed with corresponding series 8 o'l projections or ribs to enter said depressions or grooves whereby the hair is crimped when the clasp portion is ft'orced against the bodyr portion, asshown in Figures 7 and S.

While l have shown the invention embodied in certain details ol construction, it will be understood that this is primarily for the purpose of illustrating the principles oi the invention and that many modilications and changes can be made in said details without departing from the spirit or scope ot' the invention. Therefore, I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself except as required by the following claims when construed in the light of the prior art.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:

l. A hair retaining comb comprising a body portion having teeth at one edge there of, a clasp portion connected to said body portion partially overlying said teeth and normally resiliently inluenced away from and held inu spaced relation to said body portion, said clasp portion being capable ol being manually forced toward said body portion to clamp hair between them, and manually releasable means tor holding said clasp portion in hair clamping relation to said body portion.

A hair retaining comb comprising a body portion ot resilient material having teeth at one edge thereof and a clasp portion at the opposite edge normally resi1ireliance ently held in spaced angular relation to the body portion and partially overlying said teeth, said clasp portion being capable of being' manually moved toward said body portion to clamp hair between them, said body portion and said clasp portion being longitudinally curved and one thereof be ing 'formed at its end edges with inturned spring tongues to receive the edge of the other beneath them, whereby said tongues hold said clasp portion in clamping relation to said body portion and said clasp portion may be released by simultaneous pressure upon opposite ends et the comb longitudinally thereof.

3. A hair retaining comb comprising a body portion having teeth at one edge thereof, a clasp portion connected and normally resiliently held in spaced relation to said body portion and partially overlying said teeth, said clasp portion and said teeth having cooperating projections and recesses to crimp the hair between them when the clasp portion is in clamping position, said clasp portion being capable of movement toward said body portion to clamp hair between them, and manually releasable means t'or holding said clasp portion in hair clamping relation to said body portion.

A hair retaining comb comprising a body portion oi resilient material having teeth at one edge thereof and a clasp portion at the opposite edge normally resili ently held in spaced angular relation to the body portion and partially overlying said teeth, said clasp portion and said teeth having cooperating projections and recesses to crimp the hair between them when the clasp portion is in clamping position, said clasp portion being capable of movement toward said body portion to clamp hair between them, and manually releasable means for holding said clasp portion in hair clamping relation to said body portion.

5. A hair retaining comb comprising a body portion having teeth at one edge thereo'l, a clasp portion connected and normally resiliently held in spaced relation to said body portion and partially overlying said teeth, said teeth having diagonal grooves and said clasp portion having corresponding diagonal ribs to crimp the hair when the clasp portion is in clamping position, said clasp portion being capable of movement toward said body portion to clam hair between them.v and manually releasa le means for holding said clasp portion in hair clamping relation to said body portion.
