POWER PLANE.
Application med J 'uly 20, 1925. Serial No. 44,721.
My. invention relates to' power planes,
an object is to providea plane by means of which the surface of wood may be smoothed with the expenditure of but little effort on the part of the operator. 1' accomplish the objects of my invention by the provision of a support which carries a plurality of vertical shafts driven by an electric motor and having cutters secured to their lower ends in overlapping relation so that the wood may be smoothly planed by the rotation of the cutters. I
The full objects and advantages of my in-- vention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof and the novel features embodied in my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in th'eclaims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a practical embodiment of my invention, Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the device. Fig. 2 is a view mostly in vertical, longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 4 is a view in horizontal section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a view showing a board partly planed.
As shown in thedrawings the device includes two bottom or base members 10 and 12'which are spaced from each other. The member 10 is provided with an upwardly extending handle member 14 at its outer end and with an upwardly extending flange 16 at its inner end. The member ,12, is provided with an upwardly extending flange 18 at its inner end, the upper end of this flange being connected by a curved arm 20 with the outer end of the member 12. A casting 22 is placed between the flanges 16 and 18. This casting has a projection 24 on one side which cooperates slidably with a recess in the flange 16 while on the other side the casting has a dove-tail projection 26 which cooperates slidably with a corresponding recess in the flange -18 as shown in Fig. 4. The flange 16 is provided with a vertical slot 28 thru which a bolt 30 secured to the casting 22 extends, the outer end of this bolt being provided with a nut 32. The flange 18 is provided with a vertical slot 34 thru which a screw 36 extends, the inner end of the screw engaging a threaded hole inthe casting and the outer vend of the screw having'a knurled head 38. The casting on one side has a: lug
4O providedwith a screw threaded hole for and receiving-a set screw 42 which engages the upper end of the flange 16. On the other side the casting has a lug 44 in which is rotatably mounted a screw 46 whose lower. end engages a screw threaded Opening at the up 1'.
end of the flange 18 and whose upper on is provided with a knurled head 48. The up per portion of the casting 22-is formed as a'.
socket member which receives anelectric' motor 52 having a shaft 54. Current is supplied to the motor from any convenient source of electric supply by means of wires 55 and 56.. The wire 55 connects'the motor directly with the source of supplywhile the wire 56 connects the motor with a contact member 58 mounted on an insulating disk 60 placed in a recess in the-up er. end ofthe andle member 14. A secon contact member 62 is spaced from the contact member 58 and is connected bya wire 64 with the source of electric supply. A cover plate 66 is held Over the recess by a screw 68. bridge member 70 is secured to the lower end of a plunger rod 72 passing thru the cover plate and normally held upwardly by a 1 coiled spring 74. The circuit is completed when the rod 7 2 is depressed. The lower end of the motor shaft 54 is mounted in a partition member 7 6 extending across the casting 22 and above thispartition member the shaft has secured thereto a gear 78 meshing with .a plurality of gears 80 arranged concentriare provided with internally screw threaded sockets 88 which receive the-externally screw threaded shanks of cutters 90 which project belowthe under surface of'the bottom memscrews 86. The lower ends of the shafts 82 a ber 12 and whose lower ends are intended to come flush with the under surface ofthe bottom member 10. In other words the lower surface of the member 10 is disposed below the lower surface of the member 12 by the amount of cut. A gauge late 92 is secured I to the outer ends of two ro s 94 and'96. The rod 94 extends thru an o ening in themember-10. and is adjustably eld by a set screw Will-be caused to rotatewhen the plunger rod 72 is depressed sothat current is conducted to the motor. fWhile the-drawings show all of the cutters as being the; same, it will be understood that one .or more of them may be made longer or of different shape so as to produce a deeper cut as for instance in making moldings. When they are all alike a smooth planed surface will be produced on the board B. By referring to Fig. 3 it will be seen that the cutters overlap so that no ridges are left in the planed surface. Fig. 5 shows a cut C made adjacent the edge-of the board B. Successive .cuts may be made to produce a planed surface on the board by'adjusting the gauge late 92. .If desired one or more cuts may be made in spaced relation to other cuts'as indicated at C so as to leave raised portions or ribs Ron the board. The depth of cut may be regulated by'adjusting the attach ment of the flange 18 to the casting. When different lengths of cutters are used it will be understood that the flange 16 may be adi'usted on the casting so as to maintain the ower surface of the member flush with the outer ends of the cutters. The device is moved along the material, being operated nuns-1o uponby the operator who grasps the handle 14 and the curved arm and closes the switch to cause the cutters to rotate.
I claim: p
