IMPROVEMENT IN REVOLVING PAINT-EXHIBITORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,114, dated J une 8, application filed April 30, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THEODORE O. VAN Ans- DALE, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of 7 Kings and State of New York, have invented a machine for the ready and convenient exhibition of prepared and other paints and colors, and ofgrained work; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l is an elevation of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal transverse section of said machine drawn across Fig. 1 at the line X X.

The object of this invention is to furnish to dealers in prepared and other paints, and graining colors, a machine or device for the exhibition of the same, whereby the effect of the combinations of or contrasts between various shades or tints of paints and colors and designs in graining with other shades and tints of paints and colors and designs in graining, as applied to surfaces, may be presented to the eye in a convenient manner, so that the effect thereof, as so combined or contrasted and used for the ground-work or body and shading or trimming of painted, grained, or ornamental work, may be judged of without further comparison, and at a glance.

The machine consists of a frame, revolving upon an upright rod, (Fig. 2, 60,) fastened to a pedestal, (Figs. 1 and 2, b 1),) of any form or shape suitable as a stand for the same, which rod terminates at the top in an ornamental finial, (Fig. 1, c c.) Said frame consists of a base (Fig. 1, d d) and top, (Fig. 1, c 0,) both of which may be octagonal in form, as in the figures, or have a greater or less number of sides. Between said base and top, and connecting the same together, and at each of theangles formed by the meeting of the sides of said base and top, are fixed or inserted upright supports or pillars, (Figs. 1 and 2, f f,) square in shape, and set diagonally or cornerwise at said angles. Between said supports are placed flat panels, (Figs. 1 and 2, g 9,) revolving upon pivots (Fig. 2, h h) inserted in said base and top, and which are of 1 sufficient width and height when closed to fill up the spaces between said supports.

Said frame is painted or grained with the various colors desired to be exhibited in the following manner: Each one of the several sides of said base and top, together with the sides of said supports that face the same, as set diagonally, is painted or grained with a distinct shade, tint, or design, so that the same form together a frame or border of a single shade, tint, or design; and each of the two sides of said revolving panels is painted or grained with a distinct shade, tint, or design. The shades, tints, or designs intended as the ground-work, body, or paneling are painted upon the respective sides of said panels, and the shades, tints, or designs corresponding thereto and contrasting therewith, and intended as the shading, trimming, or bordering, are painted upon the respective sides of said base and top, and of said supports. Thus, the different shades or tints of paints and colors or designs for graining so painted or grained upon the respective sides of said panels maybe conveniently compared or contrasted with the shades, tints, or designs painted upon the sides of said frame adjoining and inclosing the same; and by revolving said panels two separate shades, tints, or designs may be compared or contrasted with the trimming or bordering suitable for the same. Each of said shades, tints, or designs may be marked or designated with its appropriate number, so that purchasers may select paints or colors by the numbers affixed thereon.

Said machine may be constructed of any size, of wood, metal, or other suitable material.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured by Letters Patent, is.

The revolving frame consisting of the top 0 and base 6?, having the panels 9 pivoted between them, and alternating with the strips f between the panels, for exhibiting the contrasts between different shades of paint placed upon the top, the base, upon the strips f, and upon either side of the panels, substantially as above described.
