UNITED sTATEs CARI. UNGERMAN, or DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SASH REGULATOR.
Application filed October 19, 1925. Serial No. 63,320.
This invention relates to a sash regulating device and has special reference to that class of devices mounted in the sash wells of automobile doors or bodies for raising and lower'- ing` sashcs. My invention has special reference to those devices utilizing a pivoted arm for adjustingV the sash, and my invention aims to providea novel rack and pinion mechanism by which a pivoted sash adjusting arm may be readily swung in an arc.
My invention aims to provide an arm adjusting mechanism consisting of comparatively few parts that are inexpensive to manufacture, easy to assemble and highly efficient as a sash regulator.
The construction will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of an automobile door provided with a sash'regulating device in accordance with this invention;
F ig. 2 is a vert-ical sectional View of the same;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation of a pivoted rack guide;
Fig. 4 is al detail sectional view takenon the line IV-IV of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a portion of the device showing the pivoted end of a sash adjusting arm;
Fig. 6 is an elevation of a detached rack guide, vand F ig. 7 is an end view of the same.
in the drawing, the reference numeral 1 denotes, by the way of an example, a door frame having a sash well 2 for a sash 3 adapted to be raised and lowered in the door frame.
4 is a transverse lock board or support in the frame 1 and mounted thereon is a plate 5 ian which is journaled the pivot 6 of a sash adjusting arm 7 adapted to swing in an arc relative to the plate 5. The inner pivoted end of the arm 7 is connected to a coiled band spring S supported from the plate 5 and adapted to facilitate movement of the pivoted arm 7. The outer end of the arm is operatively connected to a lateral guide 9 carried by the lower edge ofthe sash 3, so that when the arm 7 is swung in an arc the sash 3 may be raised or lowered.
10 is a rack having its inner end pivotally connected to the arm 7, as at 11.
The plate 5 is punched and pressed to o. The bearings 12 and 18 cooperate in supporting a crank shaft 14: provided with an operating crank 15.
16 is a channel shaped rack guide havingan extension 17 apertured, as at 18, to receive the bearing 12 whereby said rack guide may pivot relative to the crank shaft 14. '1`he rack guide 16 slidably holds the rack 10 against accident-al displacement and said guide is adapted to tilt or pivot relative to the shaft 14kv during adjustment of the sash 3.
19 is a pinion mount-ed on the shaft 1li and meshing with the rack 10.
Rotation of the crank 15 causes the pinion 19 to shift the rack 10 and since the arm 7 is pivotally supported relative to the plate 5 and adjustable relative to the sash 3 the rack 10 can shift the arm 7 so long as the.'u
guide 16 pivots on the bearing 12.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the sash regulating device consists of very few parts, the majority of which are sheet metal stampings and afford a strucf" ture'that is comparatively flat and easy to mount in a sash well. Obviously various kinds of clutches or locking devices may be used to prevent accidental movement of the sash, and while inthe drawing there is disclosed a sash regulating device that has been f tested and found satisfactory, yet it is to be understood that the structural details are susceptible to such changes as are permissible by the appended claim. AWhat I claim is:- n
In a sash regulating` device wherein an arm is pivotally supported and operatively connected to a sash for adjusting the sash means adapted for moving said arm, said means including an arm supporting plate provided with a bearing, a crank operated shaft journaled in the plate bearing, a channel guide having an apertured extension pivoted on the plate bearing to support said guide at one side of said bearing, a rack slidable in said guide and pivotally connected to said arm, and a pinion on said shaft extending into said channel guide and meshing with said crank. l
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
CARI. UNoERMAN.
