- C. ENGLERT HEATING 0R VENTILATING REGISTER Filed Auz. s, 1926 T lNVENTOR Mar/es fay BY z ATTORNEYS UIIHIHIIEHIIU mmnabzmj DUBW JEIU EHIHIIDEJEID Patented 30, 1927. 1
CHARLES ENGLERT, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
HEATING on vnn'rrrmzme REGISTER.
Application filed August 3,1926. Serial No. 126,885,
The present invention relates to heating or ventilating registers and an object of the invention is to provide a novel means of pivotally supporting the shutter on the rear face of the front plate of the register. Another object of the invention is to provide a novel construction wherein a pivoted shutter may be moved on its pivot by means of two operators, opening of the shutter and the other of which effects the closing of the shutter.
To these and other ends the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described: the novelfeatures being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front view of the register constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a rear view;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged I through the register showing the shutter closed; 7 I
I Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the shut ter open; v
Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of the upper rear face of the shutter; and. I I
Fig. 6 is a'sectionon the enlarged section on the line 66, Fig. 5. v I f,
Referring more particularly to the illustrated embodiment of the invention, 1 indi- Q cates the face plate which is formedfrom a 1 single casting with a numberof openings 2' therein, the edges of the face plate being bent or deflected rearwardly at 3 to cooperate with the wall through which the flue passes.
- On the rear face of this face plate is a flange 5 whichprojects into the flue opening. Also pivotally mounted on the rear face of the face plate is a shutter 6.
(In order that this" shutter may lie flush against the rear face when in closed position, and, at the same time, to provide for effecting the movement of the shutter, there is provided preferably a member formed of sheet metal and having an innermost portion 7 secured to the rear face of the shutter 6 in spaced relation to one edge and projecting outwardly from its secured portion 7 at 8 in spaced relation to the rear face of the plate but substantially. parallel with said plate. This portion 8 carries two pintles 9 riveted to the inner face of said plate at 10 and projecting from opposite sides of the portion 8 and substantially in the horizontal one of which effects the vertical section screws 16 and 17 passing through said plates,
the screw 16 having its head on the rear face of the plate and the screw 17 having its head on the front face of the plate. It is apparent that by tightening these screws, the pressure 'on the pintles 9 may be varied tohold the shutter through friction in the different s PATENT OFFICE...
positions to which it is adjusted. "The screw 17 on the outside permits sufficient adjustment to be obtained from the outer face of.
the face plate. If this is insufficient the face plate may be removed and the screw 16 adjusted. f
With the end in view of operating the shutter. two operators 18 and 19 are-provided preferably in the form-of plungers guided in the face plate and the block or piece 11, one above the other. said plungers having enlarged heads 20 which will prevent their being withdrawn from their guides. The
plunger or operator 18 is adapted'to cooperate with the inner face of the portion 8 of the pivoting member and'to this end the shutter is'provided with an opening orrecess 21 adjacent its upper edge. so that the plunger 18 may extend through the same to engage said portion 8 of the pivoting member'on one side of the pivot. From the por-- tion 8 of the pivoting member. a portion 22 extends upwardly on the opposite'side ofthe pivot ofxtheshutter, said portion 22 being deflected in a plane in rear of the portion 8 and lying behind the plunger 19 so thatsaid plunger 19 may cooperate therewith.
- It is apparent that pushing inwardly on the plunger 18 will cause the rear end of the latter to engage the portion 8 and shift the shutter 6 on its pivot, the shutter being held in this-position by the friction bearings which cooperate with the pintles 9. This action moves the plunger 19 outwardly, so that it will be in a position to have pressure appliedthereto in order tocmove the shutter tovclosed position, thus effecting the movement of the plunger 18 to itsouter position.
It will thus-be seen that by alternate pressure on the two members, the shutter may be opened and closed and, at the same time,
one plunger is pushed inwardly and the other plunger is moved to an outer position, thus indicating to the user of" the plunger,- the plunger that is to be operated to effect the movement of the shutter away from the position it occupies.
, the face plate.
' the portion with Which said member en gages;
l/Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A heating or ventilating register comprising a face plate, a shutter piv'oted on the rear face of said face plate and having portions on opposite sides of its pivot, andotwo independently mounted operators on the face plate arranged to cooperate each with one of said portions on opposite sides ofthe pivot to shift the shutterin opposite directions.
2'. A heating or ventilating register comprising a face plate, a shutter pivotally mounted on the face plate and having portions on opposite sides of its pivot, and two pluiigers slidably mounted on theface plate and each arranged to cooperate with one of said two portions on opposite sides of the pivot to shift the shutter in opposite direc-' tions. v
3; A heating or ventilating register comprising a face plate, a shutter, a pivoting piece secured to the rear face of the shutter near one edge of the latter and extending towards such edge in spaced but parallel relation to the shutter, pint'les projecting The portions with which the from opposite sides of said pivoting piece, and friction producing bearingscarried by the face plate and cooperating with said PilltlESi 4:. A heating or ventilating register comprising a=- faceplate, a shutter, a member secured to the rear face of the shutter near one edge-ofthe latter and extending toward and beyond such edge, the shutter being providedwith a recess under said member, means for pivotaliy supporting said" shutter through said 'member at a point in spaced relation to the end of the member so that the member has portions lying on opposite sides of the pivotal axis, and two operators mounted on the face plate and cooperating with said member on opposite sides of the pivotal axis to shift the shutter in opposite directions. f 1
5. A heating or ventilating registercomprising a face plate, a shutter, a member secured to the shutter and projecting beyond one edge of the latter, means for pivotally supporting said shutter through the member at a point in spaced relation to the outer end of said member sothat themember has portions lyingon opposite sides of the pivotal axis, and two operators mounted on the face plate and arranged to cooperate with said member on opposite sides of'the pivotal axis of the shutter.
,6. A register comprising a face plate, a shutter having an-opening in one edge thereof, a member secured to the rear face or said'face plate and'extending over said opening in spaced relation to the plane of the face plate, said member having an extension still further deflecting away from the plane of the face plate, pintles projecting from that portion of the member coveringfthe opening, and two plungers slidab'ly mounted on the face plate, one cooperating with the 7 portion covering the opening and the other cooperating with that portion which is farther from the shutter, and frictional bearings mounted on the face plate and cooperating with the pintles to pivotally support the shutter. f
