vThe purpose of thevpresent invention isto provide, in a fastening .or sealingdevice for burial caskets of improved construction, improved mea-ns'for hermetically sealing the 5 cover or lid of the casket. l
' Another purpose is to provide a casket including a sealing device, of improved con` struction, and one which-is exceedinglydurable. In" other Words, the casket Eas herein 1o diclose'dY has lasting qualities, and is substantially impervious to the various destructive elements, such as air, earth, Water, orltime.
Still anotherpurpose is to providea casket including-itsv sealing device, constructed of any suitable material, preferably aluminum or copper, it being agparticular aimto employ pressed steel surfaced or finished lin porcelain enamel.
A further purpose is to provide, inhermetically sealing the cover or lid, a composition of rubberized orrubber treated Vfabric (for instance, vsimilar to gasket material), utilized in a marginal groove ofsubstantial concave cavity on theunder side of the lidV or cover for the' purposeof conformingfto the marginal rolled rim,` thus affording a casket of air and Water tight character.`

Referring to the dra\vings, 1 designates a casketvvbich may be anysize andshape and constructed of any suitablemetal, preferably pressedsteel heavily coated'or surfaced prefer'ably with porcelain enamel, rendering the bodyof the casket morednrable, dueto the facthat su'cfh surfacing or coating of porcelain ienamel "carries fwith .it substantial re-y sisting qualities ltothefelerr'ients of the earth, it also being the aim toalfl'ord casket hav? ingspecijalmerit, jfor instance, it beingreasonable in cost', and "the construction is such as to insure compactn'ess in. transportation, v.in
' thatithe lid'. and the body of the casket may be nested, rendering `,the l casket conyenient rfor armyandvnayy fuse,`the nesting of the cover* orlid and the'body of the casket enabling lthe casket to be readily put into storage. H Y' T hegcasket may be Vmade into marblev or Wood `ini's`h,l`and otherwise ornamented, as
may bej f oiind`desirable. f AILThe casket has a coverv 2.y j The body of the casket includes fixtures to be used for vcarrying thecasket, these fixtures 3 beingdesign'ed fio v or fixtures in place, and yet affording a fluidtight casket.
The cover or lid is fitted with a suitable plate-glass 5 which may be left plain if desired, or which may be frosted.
r1`he cover 2 may be also constructed of any suitable metal, preferably pressed steel heavily coated or surfaced with porcelai enamel.
The body of the casket has a marginal roll or flange 6, which may be any size. This flange or roll is arcuate in crosssection. In other words, it is concaved from its under face.
The cover or lid may be any suitable shape and is preferably provided with a rolled flange or rim formed marginally about the cover, which is also arcuate corresponding to the arcuate shape of the rim or flange 6, in order to conform thereto. However, the arcuate marginal flange or rim 7 of the cover overlies the flange or rim a substantial distance, depending downwardly as shown more clearly at 8 in Figure 5. This depending part 8 of the rim or roll or flange of the cover at suitable locations is provided with slots 9, and between the slots with resilient tongues 10, the purpose of whichwill hereinafter appear.
Interposed between the marginal rolls, arms or flanges 6 and 7 is a suitable packing or gasket or sealing means 11, of any suitable material, either rubberized asbestos or rubberized fabric, or the like, preferably the latter, in order 'to insure a tightjoint between the rolls or rims of the body and cover of the casket.
Passing through the rims or rolls of the body and the cover of the casket and at loca tions'incident to the resilient tongues 10 (it being possible to use any number) are bolts 12, preferably provided with flat heads 13, which engage theupper face of the flange 7 of the cover. The shanks of the bolts pass through the two rims and through the packing. The Shanks of the bolts have opposite sides cut away causing flat extensions 14- to be formed, and 15 denotes a lever, the head portion 16 of which is bifurcated as shown at 17. The bifurcation 17 receives the flat eX- tension 111 of the shank of thebolt, that is to say, when the lever is mounted in position. The head 15 of the lever consists ofthe opposite disk walls 18, which are notched at 19.
r(sa
The bottoms of the notches 19 are constructed off-center or eccentric to the center of the disk walls, the notches adapted to engage a transverse pin 20 carried by the flat eXtenlsion 14C of the shank of the bolt. Due to the eccentricity of the crotches or bottoms of the notches 19, the disk walls operate as cams or eccentrics, when the lever is moved to fastening position. 1Nhenthe 1ever 15 is moved into fastening position, the walls or cams engage with the under face of the rim, roll or flange 6 of the body of the casket, the cams acting to draw the two flanges, rims or rolls 6 and 7 toward each other, clamping the packing 11 tightly between the flanges., thereby insuring a subf stantial seal hermetically between the rims,-
also insuring a fluid-tight joint. The lever 15 when in fastening position has its free end 21 engaged with the under face of the tongue 10, closely in position with a shoulder 22 on the under face of the tongue, The factvis, when the free end 21 of the lever is so engaged a portion of the body of the lever engages the under edge 23 of the rim or roll 6, thereby limiting the lever in itsmovement to insure a fastening position.
Where the fiat extension 141 merges from a portion of the shank, shoulders 24C are caused to be formed. These shoulders constitute limiting means to prevent the notches 19 from disengaging the transverse pin 20,V
be made in various designs, and is fitted with a hermetically sealed plate-glass. However, the cover may be left plain. This construction of burial casket will permit of burials without the use of rough boxes, cement sarcophagus and the like, or other preparation, unless such may be considered as a matter of choice.
v The invention having been set forth, what is claimed is:
1. The combination with conforming rims on the adjacent marginal edges of abody and a cover of, afburial casket including a packing between the rims, a bolt passing through the conforming rims and the packing and provided with means to engage'the under face of the rim'ofthe body to dra-w the two rims together, means for'holding the tightening means in fastened position, said bolt including opposite shoulders, and means carried by the bolt consisting of eccentrically mounted camsadapted to engagewith said shoulders, when said means engage with the underk face of one of the rims to limit dis-A connection of such means from the bolt, when the fastening means is in a position at' right angles to the bolt, a position such as used to prevent detachment of such means. 2. The combination with conforming rims of a burial casket and cover therefor, including a packing between the two rims, a'bolt passing through the rims and the packing, a device removably pvoted on the shank of the bolt and provided With means for engagement with the under face of the rim of the body to draw the two rims together, means for retaining the device in fastened position, said last mentioned means consisting of a lever arm, the rim of the Cover having a spring tongue including a, shoulder,
with which shoulder and the tongue the lever may be held locked in a fastened position, and means for limiting the lever arm l0 in enga-gement with the shoulder of said tongue. In testimony whereof I aliX my sionature.
