IMPROVEMENT IN TEMPORARV BINDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164.030, dated June 1, 1875; application filed April 10, 1875.

To all whom it may concem: Be it known that we, ROBERT O. Pnmc and WILLIAM H. FOYE, both of Portland, in

the county of Gumberland and State of Maine, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Temporary Binders; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of the same This invention has relation to improvements in temporary binders, designed for filin g away letters and the like, wherein a metallic paperfastener, supported by a catch or holder in an upright position upon a suitable board, and aclamping device operated by a suitable spring or springs, are employed, in combination with a metallic paper-fastener and a detachable conical cap adapted to be passed over the npper ends of the perorating-arms of the same, whereby they are kept together, and a neat smooth cut or hole is made in the paper.

In the annexed drawings, A designates a filing-board of the usual Well-known form and dimensions, and B represents a catch or holder rigidly Secured thereto by means of screws, or in any other suitable manner. This catch is bent upward above the board to at'ford room for the base a of a paper-fastener, C, which is passed under it by means of a slit, I), cut therein, and the said catch, being in the nature of a spring, and pressing the fastener forcibly against the letter-board, will hold the fastener in an upright position. This fastener is made of a single piece of wire of suitable rigidity by bending it in a serpentine or figure-of-S form, to construct the base; then bringing its free ends together and bending them upward at right angles to the base, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. In order to keep the ends or points of the filing-arms together we use a pointed metallic cap, D, of suitable dimensions, which is passed over the said arms, as shown in Fig. 4:;

or we may use one, 0', of the following construction, to wit, by forming the base a of a solid netallic disk, to which is centrally and rigidly Secured a metallic tube, d, out of the upper end of which is cut a number of angular strips, for the purpose of i'orming penetrating-points e, which are then pressed inward toward each other, forning a pyramidal point. Over this point we may, as above described, apply a cap, as we may elect, or not, thefastener thus forned being of such rigidity that, with paper of ordinary thickness, a cap will not be required. E represent's a clamp formed of wire, rigidly secured to the letter-board, coiled to form springs s, and provided with a thumb-plate, F, whereby the said clamp is actuated or raised,

. to allow the insertion of a sheet of paper between the point of the fastener and the griping end of the clamp. Plato F is separate and detached from the clamping-wire, and, being made of flexible metal, is capable of being bent and suitably clamped around the lateral edges f of clamp E, thereby securing it in place.

By this means the clamping device may be made very light, and consequently easily handled an advantage which will be readily appreciated by the delivery-clerks of transportation-lines, who are compelled, by the nature of their business, to use these clamps for many hours at a time in delivering freight.

What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The detached thumb-plate F, in combination with a paper-fastener and a wire clam p, E, substautially as described.

2. The paper-fastener O, forned of a single piece of wire by bending the same in figure-8 form, to construct the base, and approximating the ends and extending theni up to form penetrating-points, substantially as specified.
