J. A. HALAIS SEAT WITH FOLDING BACK Filed Jan. 29 192s Patented Aug. 23, 1927.
tlblilED STATES PATENT QFFECE.
JEAN ALFRED HALAISQ'OF PARIS, FRANCE.
SEAT VJITH FOLDING BACK.
Application filed January 29, 1926, Serial No. 84,?01, and in France January 30, 1925.
This invention has for object a seat which is so constructed as to be foldable to occupy a very small space and easily transported to any desired place.
The seat forming the subject-matter of this invention is essentially characterized by the fact that it comprises a seat proper and a back respectively hinged to the upper end of folding legs each constituted in two parts hinged together, these legs being connected in pairs by a joint and provided, on the upper end of their lower part, with iron fittings adapted to ensure the rigidity of the whole when the seat is in the open position. In the accompanying drawing and by way of example Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the seat in the open position.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the seat in the open position.
Fig. 3 is a View of the seat in the folded posit-ion.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the seat, with the seat and back panels in the positions they assuinewhen foldin the scat.
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Figure 1.
The seat is provided with two pairs of legs with joints so they can be folded and each pair of legs consists of two parts 5-6 and 56 which can be turned around pivoting points 7 and 7. The lower parts of the legs 6 and 6 are connected by joint 10. The two lower parts of the legs 6 and 6'? of each pair of legs are rigidly connected to the corresponding parts of the other pair of legs by bars 15 and form, in opened position, the base of the seat as shown in Figures 1, 2 and l. In the opened position the parts 5 and 5* form the upper part of the legs and are connected to the same parts of the other pair of legs by round connecting bars 1 and 2.
The back rest is kept in this open position by the lower ends of the bars 18 fastened to the back rest leaning against angle irons 19 fixed to the inner sides of the upper parts 5 and 5 of the rear legs.
The lower parts of the legs 6 and 6 have on both sides .of the chair at their upper edges metal plates 8 and 8 connected by the joint stud 10 and having angular projections 9 and 9 serving as a rest for the upper parts 5 and 5 of the legs when the seat is opened as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The angle at which the lower parts of the legs 6 and can be opened is lii lited by their inner beveled upper edges (3 f the legs as clearly shown in Figures 1 to 3.
In the upper end of the back rest 3' a board or shutter 13 is pivoted at 14 and provided with a latch 12 which is engaged, when in folded position (shown in Figure 3) by a button 20 fastened to panel 3 to keep the seat folded. A handle 21 fixed to shutter 13 serves for the easy transportation.
To fold the seat froin the opened position shown in Figures 1 and 2 to the folded position of Figure 3, it'is only necessary to press with the hand on the seat 3 in an upward direction near the hooks 11 to disengage the said hooks from axle 2 and to free this panel, pivoting it around axle 1 in direction of arrow X on Figure 1. The upper parts of the legs 5 and 5 are then folded towards the lower parts 6 and G by turning on the joints 7 and 7 in the direction of the arrows Y and Z (Figure 4).
To keep the seat in folded condition it is only necessary to turn shutter 13 in the position shown in Figure 8 and to engage the locking device 12 with the button 20 of panel 3. The folded seat looks like a closed box and can be easily carried by handle 21 on shutter 13.
The seatis unfolded from the position shown in Figure 3 to that shown in Figure 2 by opening lock 12. Then the panels 3 and 8 are taken by their lower edges by reaching into the space between the folded legs and by lifting these panels, together with the upper part of the legs 5 and 5, by
turning these around the pivoting points 7 and 7 in opposite direction to the arrows Y and Z.
When the panels and the legs are brought in the position shown in Figure at it is only necessary to turn panel 3 in the opposite direction to arrow X and to engage the hooks 11 with the axle 2.
