This invention relates to improvements in jibcrane excavators, and has been devised with the view to providing apparatus for the purpose whichycan be attached to an the upper portion or swan neck of the jib,

The upper end of this ladder is coupled to the ram cross head and the lower end turned outwardly 1n Adapted a short radius for some distance. to travel in this ladder or runway, is a carriage, the excavator bucket being pivoted or hingedto said carriage. A catch or trigger is positioned at the upper portion of'the ladder and is adapted to engage with the first or leading axle of theexcavator carriage when at the top of its travel, to hold same while it is being'emptied. A winding drum and a winding rope are provided'on the crane, the end of the rope being passed oversuitable pulleys on the bucket, and secured to eye bolts on the carriage. The ram is of the double acting type and is provided with control valves on each end of the cylinder, said valves beingchain and wheel controlled. f I
A further chain and wheel is provided running parallel with the ram, and has stops so that on the ram being driven outwardly, the cross head suitably providedwith an arm or the like, will engage such stops to cut off the valve controlling the outward travel of the ram.
In the case of oil or electric power, I provide racks and gears, .or other suitable means, in place of the steam ram, to move the upper end of the ladder of the excavator.

In operation, the excavator ladder 14 is swung into position, the ram 26 being in the inward position, and the bucket 18 lowered to its fullest extent. The bucket carriage 16 runs out on the radius 23 ot the ladder, which brings the teeth 19 ot the bucket approximately horizontal. The ladder 1 1 bears its Weight at the lower end. of the bucket. The ram 26 is then operated which forces the teeth 19 of the bucket into the embankment and the pulling rope 21 then wound up while the weight of the ladder together with that of the bucket acts to force the bucket to dig into the ground as wil be understood. This operation scoops earth into the bucket until the top of the embankment is reached. The bucket 18, when it has reached the position shown in Figures 1, 2, and 6 is locked by reason of the axle raising the trigger 32' which falls over the axle and so retains the carriage 16 in this position. The pulling rope 21 is then slightly lowered which allows the bucket 18 to swing down upon its hinges 17 thereby discharging the excavated earth into a truck or vessel 39' or the like. The operator may then release the ram 26, unlock the trigger 32 by operating the rope 34, thereby permitting the bucket 18 to descend by gravity to its lowest position, when the operation of excavating is again repeated. The crane 11 may be moved along the track 38 after each operation so as to obtain an even cutting of the bank.

1. An. excavator comprising" a cranehaving a jib, a ram on the crane, a member having its end pivotally connected to the movable member of the ram for movement thereby on the crane and having an outwardl'y turned lower end, a stay connecting the crane and said meml er at a point midway the ends of said member, means to raise and lower the crane and to also correspondingly movesaid member, a carriage mounted on said member tormoveme-nt longitudinally. thereoi, a. bucket on the underside of said member pivotally connected-at its outer, closed end to said carriage and having its inner, open end presented toward the crane, a cord attaohed to the carriage and slidably connected to the open end of the bucket, and means to operate said cord to first hold the bucket substantially parallel with the carriage, to then draw the bucket and carriage upwardly on the underside oi? said member and to finally release said bucket to enable it to swing downwardly and outwardly and discharge its contents from its open end when the bucket 11 as reached a desired elevation.
2. An excavator comprising a crane having a jib, a member pivotally connected to the crane and having an outwardly turned lower end, a stay connecting the crane and said member, means to raise and lowerv the crane and to also correspondingly move said member, a carriage mounted on said member for movement longitudinally thereof, a bucket on the underside of said member pivotally connected at its outer, closed end to said carriage and having its inner, open end presented toward the crane, a cord attached to the carriage and slidably connected to the open end of the bucket, and means to operate said cord to first hold the bucket substantiall y parallel with the carriage, toth-en draw the bucket and carriage upwardly on the underside oi said member and to finally release said bucket to enable it to swing downwardly and outwardly and discharge its contents from its open end whenthe bucket has reached a desired elevation, and means to detachably hold the carriage and hence the bucket in such elevated position, said means comprising a gravitating trigger p-ivotally mounted on said member and e'ngageab-le with a member of said carriage,'and a cord to operate said trigger. v V
