UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
PIERRE J. HARDY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
'IMPROVEMENT IN COVERINGS FOR WALLS OF BUILDINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,991, dated June 1, 1875; application filed I March 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PIERRE J. HARDY, of New York city, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in method of Covering and Ornamenting the Walls of Buildings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an elevation of a portion of the front wall 'of a house protected by my improved covering. Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssection of the same, and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are perspective views of portions of said covering detached from the wall.
Letters of like names and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to enable the exterior walls of a building to be thoroughly protected from water, dampness, 850., and at the same time caused to resemble pressed brick, cut stone, .or any of the finer styles of finish to which end it consists, as a new article of manufacture, in a covering for the exterior Walls of buildings composed of a sheet of lead or other soft metal, having impressed or otherwise formed upon its outer face the configuration of brick, stone, or other facing usually employed for walls, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a sheet of soft metal, preferably lead, which, upon one face, is plane, as seen in Fig. 5, While upon its opposite outer face is im- The metal plate A is placed over the outer face of an exterior Wall, B, and secured in place by any desired means, after which, by appropriate painting, its outer face may be caused to correspond in color to the the blocks of material represented by the configuration given, and also the cement usually employed for luting the joints.
The covering described needs only the roughest kind of a wall for backing, is much less expensive than a facing of pressed brick or cut stone, it is a perfect protection to a wall from water ondampness, and can be applied to a house Without special preparation of its Walls.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, What I claim is- As a new article of manufacture, a covering for the exterior walls of building, composed of a sheet of lead or other soft metal, having impressed or otherwise formed. upon its outer face the configuration of brick, stone, or other facing usually employed for walls, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of February, 1875.
PIERRE J. HARDY.
