This invention relates to windows and closures therefor and although 1t s not to be so limited it is particularly adapted 111 its application to windows of railroad cars;

The invention has for its principal object the production of a window employing a fixed screen at or adjacent the top or bottom of the window opening and a movable sash which may be moved or slid adjacent the fixed screen to close the entire under'openi further object of the invention is the production ofa window of the type specidied in which the operating means for moving or actuating the sash 'sh'allbe carried by the fixed screen portion. A further objectof the invention is the production of a window of the above type in which the operating means shall not only so positioned as toexert a pressure centrally of the sash thus obviatin the possibility of the sash. jamming on either side thereof.

Threaded on said worm or screw is a nut 14 conforming in shape to the shape of the housing. When itis desired to raise the sash 7 the crank or handle 19 is rotated motion being translated "through the bevels 1 8 and 17 through the worm or screw 12, through the pin 15 and nut 1 and to the sash. Vhen the nut 14: strikes or abuts against the bracket 13 the sash has reached :its limit of upward movement as is obvious, the lower rail 8 thereof then being adjacent or in proximity to the top of the screen member 9. hen the sash is so raised, ventilation may be had through the screens 10 and said screens will prevent the thrusting of the passengers heads or arms out of the window opening and will also prevent the throwing of articles through said openings. In inclement weather the sash may be loweredby rotation of the crank or handle 19 to effectivel close the entire window It will. also be obvious, that inasmuch as the thrust on the sash is a central one when the sash is actuated the tendency to bind of the side rails 6 in the channels 5 is obviated.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 1, 5 and 6 the screen members are shown provided by a slot 20 centrallythereof having teeth on either side wall. A U-shaped bracket 21 extends through said slot and is connected at is rear end by screws or other connecting means to the lower rail 8 of the sash. Extending through the arms of the bracket 21 is a pivot pin 22 to which is pivoted two handles 23 the inner ends or shanks of which extend within the bracket and are normally spaced from each other by a compression spring 24 which is fastened to said inner ends. Said inner ends also each carries a locking lug 25 which interlock with the teeth on the side walls of the slot 20 in an obvious manner.
To raise the sash in the modification the handles 23 are pressed together against the action of the spring 24 which releases the lugs 25 from engagement with the teeth on the walls of the slot 20 whereupon the sash may be raised by pulling upwardly on the handles. The sash may be held in any ad justed position by merely releasing the handles whereupon the locking lugs 25 will auto matically become engaged with the teeth on the side walls of the slot 20 by the action of the spring 2a in an obvious manner.
Vi e claim as our invention:
1. In a window, a frame providing a window opening, a fixed screen member adjacent one end of said opening, a movable sash in said opening adapted to close the same and means connecting said screen member and sash for actuating said sash.
2. In a window, a frame providing a window openin a fixed screen member adjacent one end of said opening, a movable sash in said opening adapted to close the same and movable away from and towards said screen member and means connecting said screen member and sash for actuating said sash.
3, In a window, a frame providing a window opening, a screen member fixed to said frame adjacent one end of said opening, a movable sash in said opening adapted to close the same and means carried by said fixed screen member for actuating said sash.
4. In a window, a frame providing a window opening, a fixed screen member at one end of said opening and fixed to said frame, a. movable sash in said opening adapted to close the same and to be brought into parallelism with said fixed screen member, means carried by said fixed screen member for actuating said sash and connected to said sash approximately centrally thereof.
5. In a window, a rectangular frame providing a window opening and having a window well in the upper portion thereof and provided with channels in the'side members thereof, a screen member secured to said frame and closing a portion of said window opening, a sash slidable in said channels and into said window well and actuating means mounted on said fixed screen member'and connected to said sash;
6. In a window, a rectangular frame providing a window opening and having a win dow well in the upper wall thereof and channels in the side walls thereof, a window sash slidable in said channels and adapted to close said opening and also adapted'to slide into said window well, a screen fixed to the lower part of said frame and partially closing said opening and actuating means mounted on said screen and'connected to said sash for actuating the same.
7. In a window, a frame providing a window opening, a sash slidable in said frame, a fixed screen member adjacent one end of said opening, a housing on said screen member having a slot in the rear wall thereof, actuating means within said housing and connecting means extending through said slot and connected. to said sash.
S.' In a window, a frame provided with a window opening, a screen'member in said opening, a sash member in said opening adapted to close the same and means connecting said screen member and sash member for actuating one of said members.
