UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS W. MOORE, OF PLAINFI'ELD, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED TABLES AND DESKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.- l63,939, dated June 1,1875; application filed November 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS W. MOORE, of Plainfield, Union county, New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Combined Table and Desk, of which the following is. a specification The object of my invention is to provide an improved combined table and writing-desk.
The invention consists of a table having a suitable inclosed space with pigeon-holes, 850.,
under the top, with a top made of two parts, and hinged at the point where the slope of the desk begins also, with one side of the frame made lower than the other side, and the ends sloped from it up to the point where the top is hinged, and on this low part a piece is hinged to swing up on the top and hold the table-top level when a table is required, and close the space beneath. The table-top has a piece at each end, which overlaps the end of the frame, and keeps the space under the top closed when it is adjusted for a table.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of my improved combined table and desk, showing it adjusted for a table; and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation, showing it adjusted for a desk. Both of these sections are taken on the line 00 09, Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken on the line y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate. correspondin g parts.
The top A is made in two parts, which are hinged together at B, which is at the top of the inclined portion of the desk-top. From this point the ends 0 of the frame descend on the line D to the front side E, the same as the ends of a desk, and the front side of the frame is made lower than the other side, and provided with a piece, F, hinged to its top, so as to swing up, as in Fig. 1, and hold the top up level, or down, as in Fig. 2, and let it incline for a desk. The top has a piece, G, overlapping each end of the frame, to keep the space under the, top closed when the top is supported on the piece F. The space below the top is inclosed the same as a desk, and contains pigeon-holes I and other adjuncts of a desk.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the lid A, consisting of two sections hinged together,- having triangular strips G, and the piece E, having the strip F hinged thereto, whereby the device may be converted from a table to an inclined closed desk, or vice versa, all substantially as specified.
THOMAS W. MOORE.
