My invention relates in general to beds of ing a combination of parts, so assembled as to oder a simple, cheap and practical folding bed, especially adapted for use in dwellings and the like where space is at a premium and where it is desirable to provide a disappearing bed which can be quickly and conveniently set up or hidden away as occasion demands.
The preferred iorm ot the invention is shown on the accompanying drawings and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan of the bed, minus the mattress set up for use, with the cabinet therefor shown in horizontal section.
Fig. 2 is a View in side elevation of the bed as set up and showing the cabinet in ver tical section with the doors removed.
Fig. 3 is a View in longitudinal vertical section showing the bed about to be folded into the cabinet.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 and showing tho bed folded within the cabinet.

Referring now to the drawings and the figures thereof in detail The letter A rep resents a cabinet or it may just aswell be a closet or the like; in fact my bed may be set up against any wall even in the absence of side pieces, as the mounting parts are designed particularly so as to make the bed applicable to a single vertical supporting or mounting surface. This latter featur'eis an object of the invention and of prime importance.

First .ot all thebed will include a pair of connected arms 5 and (i p'ivotally mounted to a pair of housings 7 and 7 attached to the back wall of the cabinet. These housings are made to confine the rollers 8 on the ends of the arms so as to permit the arm ends to vertically change their positions when the bed is folded or extended. Suitable restraining links 9 are pivoted to the base oi. the housing mounting and to the arms, to guide and hold the armsin alignment.
Connected to each oli-the arms 5 and G intermediate their ends is a Strona' coil spring 10, the purpose of which is tei/draw the bed into the cabinet duri g the 'folding action. The wall monntings for these springs are made adjustable asbest shownjin Fig. 9. The saine comprises a threaded screw eye 11 engaging a plate or the like 12, which in turn is `made with an eye 13 to hook over the hookplate 14. f A nut 15 for the end of the screw eye 11 holds the same in the plate, and when the springs 1l) become weak trom use, the same may be strengthened by screwing down on the nut 15.
rlhe bed structure per se is made with side bars 1G and 17, two sections tor each side of the bed. The usual head and ioot parts 18 and 19 respectively are carried bv the bars. The head is rigid and the foot is also rigidly fixed, but the feet 20 are pivoted as at 21 to the ends of the side bar sections 1T. The-side bar sections on both sides oi the bed are pivotally connected to a relatirclv large plate 22, the latter having legs 23 with floor rollers 2d. The pivot points i'or the side bar sections are positioned as at 25, so as to leave the extremities 26 ot the bars free to pivotally connect with links 2T and 28 as at 29.
The link 28 is shorter-.than the link 2T andA the same is connected by pivot 30 to a guide link 31, which latter is pivoted at its enxl 32 to the plate 22. Connecting at the pivot point 30 a` relatively long link: 83. which has its end pivotally attached as at 34 to crank piece `This Vcrank is connected by the pivot 36 to the end of the link 27.
Anchored by the adjustable connection 87 is a coil spring 38 having its ,opposite end httached to the crank piece 35 at the pivot 3l. Instead of extending the side bar sections beyond the pivots 25, stripsfor the like 39 may be secured to the lsections to extend them beyond the pivots to connect with the links 27 and 28 respectively. ln this event the pivots 25 will be positioned at the extremities of the bars as shown.
Referring to Fig. 6 it will be noted that the link 27 with the extremity 26 oi' its pivotally connected foot section of the bed, form a. toggle-joint. Thevline of action of any force applied through the crank 35; as for iii'stsnce bythe springs l0 or 38; is in line with the ivot points 36 29 and Q5 at the right of t e idgure, and thereby serves only to increase pivot friction. and resist closing oi the bed7 so that, while a slight lift on the foot section 17 against this resistance will break the toggle and allow the bed to close, no amount ci torce applied to the head section l5 will yinitiate folding oi tbegbed. For purposes of mechanical expediency, the toggle-joint 27. 29, QG, is permitted to buckle very slightly beyond fully extended posidion; a flange on top of the large plate 22 oi the base trame member, serving; to hold the toggle-joint cocked against collapse in this reverse directione The bar sections l? or rather the toot section of the bed control the folding action o'if the bed through the ineens of the crank 35. is long as the bed is extended, the head sec tion will. not fold until a litt is imparted to the ioot section. When the foot section is lifted, tbe crank piece 35 is caused to rotate past its vertical centerline and the spring 38 pulls the crank during this movement, which in turn causes the link 3o to turn the link 3l,
' and which latter causes link 28 to move and break the hinge made by the pivot 29, and thus the head section et the bed begins to fold or rather raise up. As this occurs the bed as a whole is released to the influence of the springs l0, and the pull imparted thereby upon the bed draws the bed into 'the cabinet and at the seme time completes the Jtoldii'ig action.
The two springs l0 and the two springs 38 do the work, first assisted by the-manual liti-.ing of the toot section through a predetermined angle. The springs 38 'fold the sections and the springs 10 pull them into the cabinet.
To fold the legs '2O in foldingposition, as well as hold the same rigid when in eX- tended position. supplemental bars 4i() are provided and pivoted to the plate .22 at one end and to the legs 20 at tbe other end below the pivots 2l.
From the foregoingy description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and method oi' operation will be readily linderstood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while have described the principle ot' operation together with the device which l now consider to be the best embodiment ther-coi", l desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrativeandv that such changes may be made, when desired., as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as nefw and desire to secure by `LettersY Patent of the United States is the following:
l. A. folding bed comprising o support, a head. section and a 'foot section pivoted to said support forfoldable movement from horizontal to vertical, a toggle link connected to said foot section and to said support whereby the foot section constitutes one leg of a toggle joint, linkage connecting said head section to the toggle joint ier folding movement with the toot section; said linkage being locked by the toggle joint when the foot section is horizontal; and spring means tending to fold said head section, whereby the bed will be folded b said spring only after folding 'motion of the :toot section has been manually initiated to break the toggle.
