Description
1,638,951 16, 1927- E. B. NENTWIG ROCKING TOY Filed Nov. 12. 1926 ATTORN EY WITNESS:
Patented Aug. 16, 1927.-
UNITED STATES BOCKING '1OY.
Application led 'November My present invention has reference to a rocking toy for children, and one of the primary objects is the provision of a to& of this character which will not only a ord amusement but healthy exercise to the user thereof.
A further object is the provision of a toy of this character which may be mounted on rockers having thereabove a pivotally supported seat, connected* at its forward end with a lever, which may be shaped to represent the head and neck of an animal, Wherein means is provided and actuated by the swinging of a lever in both directions to impart a like motion to the seat, so that the toy Will not only rock but a continuous reciprocatory movement in a horizontal plane will be imparted to the seat.
To the attainment of the above broadly stated objects and others which Will present themselves when the nature is better understood, the invention further provides other novel features of construction, combination and operative association of parts, one satisfactory embodiment of which is disclosed by the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rocking toy in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan section thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 1.
In the showing of the dr'awings I have .illustrated the base of my improved toy in the nature of rocker members.
Referring now to the drawings in detail the rocker members are indicated by the numeral 1. The rockers are connected, adjacent to the front and rear ends thereof by rounds 2. Forward of a rear round the upper edges of the rockers are formed 'with enlargements in the nature of cars 3 and connecting these cars there is a cross sectionally round bar 4. To the rear -of bar 4, and to the inner side of the rockers 1 there are pivoted, as at 5, upstanding links 6. These links are connected together by a ross sectionally round pivot rod or bar 7, the said bar passing through a pair of forwardly extending plates 8, and on these plates there is secured a scat 9.
Pivotally secured to the front round 2 there is one end of a lever 10. The lever is shaped t0 represent the head and neck portion et an animal and the plates 8 straddle the sides of the lever and are pivoted there- 12, 1926. Serialfl'o. 148,040.
to as at 11. Extending laterally from the lever, adjacent the upper portion thereof there are handle members 12, and fixed to the top of the rockers 1 forward of a pivot for the lever 10 there are laterally extending foot rests 13. r
Pivoted as at 14, between the spaced plates 8 there is a pitman 15. The pitman may have an elongated slot extending therefrom, but the same, when made of wood, preferably has secured thereon the parallel arms .of a substantially U-shaped strap 16. The outward end of a pitman is concaved as at 17, the strap 16 is arranged around the bar 4 that connects the cars 3.
The child oocupies the seat 9, permitting its feet to rest on the members 13, while its bauds grasp the handles 12. An oscillatory movement 1s imparted to the lever 10 which, of course, causes a reciprocatory movement in a plane horizontal to the seat 9. The concaved end 17 of the pitman and the rounded end of the strap 16, when alternately brought into contact with the round 4 hmits the horizontal movement of the seat 9 in both directions. The force of contact by the concaved end 17 With the round 4, and also t. le force of contact by the round: ed end of the strap 16 with the said round 4 Will impart a longitudinal movement in reverse directions to the toy, while the swingin of the lever 10 in opposite directions wil impart a rocking motion to the toy. V
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. A toy. of the class described comprising a base made up of two spaced members, a. lever pivotally secured between the members adjacent to the forward ends thereof, laterally extending handles on the lever, links prvotally secured to the members adjacent to the rear thereof, spaced plates pivotally secured to the sides of the lever and to which the links are also pivoted, a scat supported on the plates, a slotted pitman pivotally secured between the plates, an element connected to the base members and received throu h the slotted portion of the pitman secure to the base members and passing through the slot of the pitman.
2; A to of the class, described comprising space rockers, a lever centrally pivoted betWeen said rockers adjacent to the forward ends thereof, foot rests on the rockers opposite the lever, a laterally extending handle for the lever, pitmen pivotally secured to the rockers adjacent (0 the rear ends thereof, plates piv0ted to the lever and to which the. pitmen are also pivoted, a cross sectionally rounded bar connecting the rockers, a pitman pivoted between the plates and having an outer concaved end, and a sub- 'In testunony whereof I aflix my signature.
