MATHEW A. J. WIMPEE, OF ROME, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN RAILWAY-HAMMER HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,835, dated May 25, 1875,- application filed March 10,1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATHEW A. J. WIMPEE, of Rome, in the county of Floyd, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Railroad-Hammers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved rammer detached from its handle. Fig. 2 is a like view of the detachable head and contiguous portions of said rammer separated from each other, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section of said parts as united.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to enable railroad-rammers to be easily and cheaply kept in repair; and it consists in providing a rammer with a detachable head, connected therewith in the manner and for the purpose substantially as is hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents an ordinary railroad pick and rammer combined, which is constructed in the usual manner, except that at the rammer end the head is omitted, and in its place is formed a transverse tongue, 0, that has any of the Wellknown dovetail forms. A head, B, constructed preferably from steel, in the usual form, is .provided Within its inner face with a groove, 1), which corresponds to the tongue at, and enables said head to be placed longitudinally over the same, as seen in Figs. 1 and 3, in which position said head is firmly held, so as to be capable of any ordinary use. It is intended that the groove 12 shall so closely embrace the tongue at as to render a hammer necessary for the attachment or removal of the head B.
As constructed and attached, it will be seen that but a moments time is required to remove one head and replace it by another, so that by providing each rammer with two heads no appreciable delay need occur in work by the change necessary for repairs.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new is- In combination with the rammer A, provided with the dovetail tongue at, the removable head B, having a groove, 11, which corresponds to and embraces said tongue, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
MATHEW A. J. WIMPEE.
