also embodies the process or method of making the hat whereby a hat may be made in-a relatively short space of time, with eX- treme accuracy, minimum amount of manual labor, and at a relatively very low cost.

The process of making hats, as embodied in the present invention, consists essentially of mechanically braiding a plurality of ends of'narrow fabric, by means ofk a braiding machine in a tubular hat body. by braiding the narrow fabric over a suitable form and gradually varying the, elevation of the form as the braiding proceeds to provide the desired shapeto the hat, tying the ends of the narrow fabricA at the top or crown of the hat and arranging'them in such manner as to provide aneat closure at the crown, the tying of the ends of the fabric'at a pointbeyond the normal brim of the hat and trimming on inside of the body ofthe hat and fastening them in any suitable ,manner soV as to provide rounded neat appearing, comfortable rim inthe hat.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the body l of the hat is formed of a plurality of lengths of narrow fabric, and Vin constructing the hat, the lengths .of narrow fabric are braided over the `fabric frame sectionj through a 2 which may bel made of buckram or anyl other suitableV material. An adhesive 3 of any approvedtype, is first placed over a buckram frame 2, and aftervthe body is `braided over the form, the hat is ironed or u pressed by a hot iron, to cause adhesion of the braided body l to the frame 2. Specifically, thek process of making the hat comprises the use of a machine commercially known as a braiding machine, in theteXtile industry, and the braid to be used in making the hat is placed on the bobbins (not shown) in 'the usual manner, and a block shaped to conform to theshape of the hat, to be braided, is used in the center` of themac'hine; The ends of the fabricfrom the bobbins are drawn to the centerand are tied after which the machine is started and during the braidmg operation, the form is gradually elevated, resulting in the braiding of a tubular mesh' or braiding which c'omprisesthebody of the hat. The use of the form about which 'I l the narrow'fabricsare braided, regulates the specific shape of the resulting hat body and when the kbody yis woven over theA buckram frame, the buckram frame is placed upon the form on the machine andiis coated with the adhesiveB before the braiding starts. A` fewrows of braiding are made beyond fthe lower edge of what is to be the hat brim, and at the end of these last rows, the ends of the-narrowfabric are tied, and are then cut Vfree from the bobbins, leaving a form.

After the ends are tied and cut loose from the fabric Y on the bobbins, the knotted ends atrthe crown of the hat vare drawn inwardly into the hat and flattened against the inner surfaceof the crown. In cases where the buckram frame is used, this frame is cut Vat the top or center of the crown and the knotted ends are drawn through the opening thus formed, andare flattened against the inner surface of the buckram frame. If it is so desired, they may' be stitched or otherwise suitably .fastened` The rows of braiding which have extendedbeyond the normal rim of the hat, are then doubled back into the hat, as shown at 6, in FigureQ of the drawings and they are lstitched or otherwise suitably attached to maintain them in position.
