This invention relates to paper articles such as napkins, doilies, tablecloths, streamers, festoons and the like and the present ap-.
plication'is a division of our copending apl plication filed August 9, 1926, Serial No. 128,078. A principal object of the invention is the provision of crepe paper articles having irregular torn edges, the edges being colored, whereby the attractiveness of the article is enhanced.
A crepe paper napkin made in accordance with the present invention is shown in the accompanying drawing for the purpose of illustration. The napkin has its torn edges colored alternately with two colors 1 and 2 confined substantially to the width of the margin of irregularities in the torn edges.
The torn edges of the paper articles may be produced by dividing a relatively large 20 sheet of crepe paper by tearing, pulling apart or blowing apart; but the method of wetting a sheet along predetermined lines and then tearing the sheet along the moistened lines, as shown and described in our-said copending application, is preferred.
One or more colors may be applied to the torn edges by printing, spraying, or'brush" ing in any well. known manner, either before or after tearing. However, a preferred and novel mode of simultaneously wetting and coloring a sheet along the predetertom edges which are alternately mined lines of division, before tearing, is also described in said application. By this method one or more colors are applied to an elongated sheet of crepe paper by rolls having peripheral ridges dipping intoa colored liquid and contacting with the paper along longitudinal and transverse lines.
The width of the edge coloring is confined substantially to the width of the mar- '40 gin of irregularities of the torn sheet,- and it LS also preferred that the edges be colored alternately with difl'erent dyes, as shown in the drawing.

1. A crepe paper article having irregular torn edges which are colored, the coloring being confined. substantially to the width of the margin of irregularities in the torn edges. 1
