Description
G. J. MEAD FIYRE EXTINGUISHER'L Filed June a. 1921 "Aug; 9, 1927." w 1538,05)
Patented Aug. 9, 1927.
UNITED STATES GEORGE J. MEAD, 0F MILWAUKEE WISGONSIN, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,
PATENT OFFICE.
TO THE FISK RUBBER COMPANY, OF CHICOPEE FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS, A COR- PORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
FIRE EXTINGUISHER.
Application filed June 6,
My invention relates to fire extinguishers and the principal object of myinvention is to provide a new and improved extinguisher system. In the drawings accompanying the specification and forming a part thereof, 1 have shown, for purposes of illustration, one form which my invention may assume. In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional view of one unit of an extinguisher system constructed according to my invention and Figure 2 shows diagrammatically a plurality of units joined to form an extinguisher system.
The extinguisher herein shown consists of a container 11 having a concave bottom 12' which is screw-threaded at 13 to receive a bushing 141- the upper end of which is concaved at 15 to act as a seat for a floating ball 16 and the lower portion of which carries a fire extinguisher head '17 which may be of standard type except that the'usual bafile is preferably omitted. lVithin the container 11 is a fire extinguisher agent 18 such as carbon tetrachloride while the entire container 11 is so arranged thatthe agent 18 is subjected to pressure such as pressure 1 fluid which is shown as transmitted by a fluid pressure conduit 19. In such case the container 11 may be suspended directly from the conduit 19 as shown and the fluid employed may be air.
In case of fire the link 21 of the extinguisher head 17 will collapse and thereby open the valve 22 in the extinguisher head 17 whereupon the fluid pressure acting upon the agent 18 will force the agent through an opening 23 down into the fire below. In-
name to the above 1921. Serial No. 475,336.
asmuch as my extinguisher is :particularly designed for use in places containing highly I inflammable material and derives part of its advantage from the use of better extinguishing agents than those ordinarily per missible with the usual extinguisher systems I find it advantageous to prevent the pressure fluid from discharging and accordingly have provided the ball 16 which normally floats on the agent 18 but is adapted when the agent becomes completely discharged to rest in the seat 15 as shown by dotted lines at and to thus prevent the escape of the pressure fluid from the extinguisher.
The disclosure herein is illustrative only and my invention is of course not limited thereto.
I claim:
In a fire extinguisher system, a gas pressure conduit or pipe, a plurality of holders suspended from said pipe and in communication therewith, each of said holders adapted to contain a liquid chemical' for extinguishing fire and provided at its lowermost point with an outlet having a sprinkler head closure therein, and a freely movable ball Within the holder adapted to float on said liquid chemical, a seat at the bottom of the holder adapted to receive said ball when the liquid is exhausted and be held to its seat to close the outlet against the exit of gas from said conduit.
In testimonywhereof I have signed my specification.
GEORGE J MEAD.
